64GB of RAM is not automatically overkill for video editing. It is a sensible capacity for demanding 4K timelines, long projects, heavy effects, compositing, and editing while other applications are open. For straightforward HD work, short 4K projects, or a system with a limited upgrade budget, 32GB may be enough. The right choice depends on resolution, timeline complexity, effects, multitasking, the editing application, and whether your CPU, GPU, storage, and motherboard can keep up.
Is 64GB RAM overkill for video editing?
For many serious editors, 64GB is a practical middle ground rather than an indulgence. It gives the operating system, editing application, cache, preview data, and background software more room before the computer starts relying heavily on slower storage. That extra headroom matters most when a project combines high-resolution media with long timelines, multicamera edits, noise reduction, motion graphics, color work, or compositing.

It can be unnecessary for simpler workloads. An editor who cuts short 1080p clips, uses light transitions, closes other applications, and works from optimized or proxy media may see little benefit from moving beyond 32GB. Capacity also cannot compensate for an inadequate GPU, CPU, or storage subsystem. Treat 64GB as a workload decision, not a universal requirement.
How much RAM do Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve actually need?
Adobe and workstation builder Puget Systems publish different kinds of guidance. Adobe’s current Premiere requirements recommend 32GB or more for 4K and higher-resolution editing. Puget Systems gives higher workstation-building targets, including 96GB for 4K. These figures are not contradictory: Adobe describes software requirements, while Puget proposes configurations intended to keep demanding professional workflows comfortable.

Adobe’s official Premiere guidance
Adobe’s Premiere technical-requirements page, updated September 9, 2026 for the listed 26.x releases, says that 32GB or more is recommended for 4K and higher. The same page states, “The minimum specifications are for editing HD video.” That wording separates a minimum suitable for basic HD operation from a recommended configuration for more demanding formats. See the complete requirements, including supported operating systems and hardware details, at Adobe’s Premiere technical requirements.
Puget Systems’ workflow targets
Puget Systems recommends at least 64GB for Premiere Pro and scales its suggested capacities with resolution. Its page was accessed in 2026; a publication date was not established. The numbers below are workstation guidance, not Adobe minimums and not guarantees that every project will use all of the listed memory.

| 6K | 128GB | 128GB |
| 8K | 192GB | 192GB |

Puget publishes separate pages for Premiere Pro hardware recommendations and DaVinci Resolve hardware recommendations. The matching capacities do not mean the applications behave identically; they are Puget’s planning targets for systems built around progressively more demanding media.
Adobe’s broader workstation range
Adobe’s professional video and audio hardware guide describes a good editing workstation as having at least 32GB and potentially as much as 128GB. That upper figure is a workstation option, not a requirement for every editor. The guide is available as a PDF at Adobe’s professional video and audio hardware recommendations.
Which editing workloads benefit most from 64GB?
Resolution is only one variable. Two projects both labeled “4K” can have very different memory demands because of duration, effects, source formats, and the number of applications open at once.
High-resolution and high-bitrate media
4K and higher-resolution footage creates larger frames, previews, and cache data than HD. RAW, lightly compressed, or otherwise demanding source media can increase the amount of data the application must manage. More RAM gives the editor room to keep active assets and processing stages available without constantly moving data to disk.

Long, layered, or multicamera timelines
A short single-camera sequence is easier to manage than a feature-length timeline with many video and audio tracks. Multicam edits, nested sequences, adjustment layers, and numerous graphics increase the number of elements that may be active during playback and scrubbing. Long-form work therefore benefits more from headroom than a brief social clip.
Effects, color, and compositing
Motion graphics, compositing, temporal effects, denoising, and complex color operations can hold additional frames or intermediate results in memory. Fusion work inside Resolve and graphics-heavy Premiere timelines are examples where a larger capacity can prevent memory pressure, although the GPU and processor remain important to actual processing speed.
Multitasking during an edit
Editors often keep a browser, audio tools, image software, messaging, and a file manager open beside the NLE. If those programs remain active while an edit, export, or background render runs, 64GB provides more margin than 32GB. The benefit is capacity headroom, not a promise that every application will run faster.
Does doubling RAM from 32GB to 64GB make editing twice as fast?
No. Puget Systems’ benchmark comparison reported a 2.5% lower overall score with 32GB than with 64GB, a difference Puget said was within normal variation; its RAW and Fusion differences in that comparison were also within normal variation. The same testing reported a 9% lower overall score with 16GB than with 64GB. These are results from Puget’s benchmark suite, not a guaranteed percentage for your computer or project.

When 16GB constrains the workload, the penalty can be more visible. A memory upgrade can still improve stability, reduce swapping, and make multitasking more comfortable without producing a dramatic export-time increase.

What matters besides RAM capacity?
Adobe identifies memory, GPU, storage, and processor as important variables in Premiere performance. A 64GB system with weak graphics hardware or a slow drive can feel worse than a well-balanced 32GB system. Check the complete platform before spending money on memory.
GPU
The GPU can influence accelerated effects, color operations, playback, and export paths. If the graphics card is already running out of video memory or lacks the required acceleration features, adding system RAM will not solve that bottleneck.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
CPU
The processor affects decoding, encoding, effects that are CPU-bound, and general responsiveness. More RAM cannot make a processor execute those operations faster.
Storage
Adobe’s current Premiere requirements call for a fast internal SSD for the application and cache, plus additional high-speed storage for media. A slow system drive, crowded cache, or insufficient media throughput can cause pauses and poor playback even when plenty of RAM is installed.
Software and project settings
Proxy or optimized media, preview resolution, background applications, and the effects enabled on a sequence all change memory pressure. Evaluate the way you actually edit rather than choosing capacity from resolution alone.
Which capacity fits common editing scenarios?
The table is a planning framework, not a substitute for checking your application and computer. It separates likely use cases while keeping Adobe’s official recommendation and Puget’s workstation guidance distinct.

| 12K or exceptionally heavy finishing workflows | Workstation-class configurations | Puget lists 256GB for 12K; capacity alone will not address every bottleneck |
How can you tell whether your current system needs more RAM?
Look for repeatable symptoms during the edits that matter, not just the amount of memory installed on the specification sheet.
- The editor and other applications become unresponsive when a complex sequence is open.
- Playback or scrubbing deteriorates as more layers, effects, or camera angles are added.
- Switching between the NLE and other tools causes long pauses while the system moves data to storage.
- Closing background applications noticeably improves the same timeline.
- Your project regularly approaches the limits of the installed capacity while CPU, GPU, and storage are not otherwise saturated.
These signs indicate memory pressure, but they are not proof that RAM is the only cause. Check storage activity, GPU load, processor load, codecs, and application settings at the same time. A bottleneck elsewhere can produce similar pauses.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you verify compatibility before buying a 64GB kit?
Do not choose a kit solely because its capacity matches the article title. Compatibility depends on the computer model and its existing configuration.
- Identify the exact computer or motherboard model. Record the model number, processor platform, and whether the machine is a desktop, laptop, or compact system.
- Confirm the supported memory type. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the required memory generation and form factor. A physically similar module can still be electrically incompatible.
- Check the maximum supported capacity. Some systems cannot address 64GB, while others support more. Firmware and operating-system limits may also matter.
- Count available slots and inspect the current layout. Determine whether you have free slots, whether existing modules would need replacement, and whether memory is soldered. Soldered memory cannot be upgraded by installing a kit.
- Match the configuration recommended for the system. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance for module pairing and supported speeds rather than assuming any two modules will operate optimally together.
- Recheck the workload and budget. If the machine cannot be upgraded, put the money toward a balanced future system, faster approved storage, or another component that is limiting the edit.
Without the exact model and current configuration, it is not responsible to name a particular 64GB kit. The correct product category is a compatible 64GB RAM kit for that specific computer, not a universal part number.
Should you buy 64GB now or start with 32GB?
Choose 64GB immediately when your projects already involve demanding 4K work, many applications, complex effects, or a system that cannot be upgraded later. Starting at 32GB can be reasonable for lighter HD or moderate 4K editing if the computer has a clear, affordable upgrade path and your monitoring shows no memory pressure.
Compare the upgrade cost with the machine’s limits. If 32GB requires replacing an existing set of modules, the eventual total may make a 64GB configuration more sensible. Conversely, if the system has soldered memory or a low maximum capacity, buying more RAM is not an option and the decision becomes one of selecting a better-balanced computer.

What is the practical verdict for editors?
For HD editing, 64GB is often more than necessary. For sustained 4K work, it is a comfortable and defensible target, while Adobe’s official recommendation remains 32GB or more. For 6K, 8K, 12K, or unusually complex finishing, 64GB may be a starting point rather than an endpoint; Puget’s guidance rises to 128GB, 192GB, and 256GB respectively. Make the decision after checking the complete system and the actual workload, because RAM capacity cannot replace adequate CPU, GPU, or storage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will 64GB RAM improve export times in every video editor?
No. Export speed depends heavily on the processor, GPU acceleration, codec, effects, and storage path. More memory mainly helps when the project is constrained by capacity or when several demanding applications must remain open.

Yes, many 4K projects work with 32GB, especially when timelines are moderate and proxy or optimized media is used. Complex effects, long-form footage, multicamera sequences, and multitasking can make 64GB or more worthwhile.
What should I upgrade if RAM is not the bottleneck?
Check GPU capability and video memory, processor load, and the speed and arrangement of the application, cache, and media drives. Adobe specifically calls for a fast internal SSD for Premiere and additional high-speed media storage.
Is laptop RAM upgradeable to 64GB?
It depends on the exact laptop. Verify the supported memory type, maximum capacity, number of slots, current module layout, and whether memory is soldered before purchasing; a soldered design cannot accept a conventional upgrade.
