4K Gaming TV and Sound System: How to Choose the Right Setup

For a PS5, PS5 Pro or Xbox Series X, choose a 4K TV with verified 120Hz console input, VRR and low-latency gaming support, then match its picture characteristics and HDMI ports to your room and audio system. The simplest wiring is console → TV → sound system: connect the console to a suitable TV HDMI input, then connect the TV’s eARC port to an eARC soundbar or AV receiver. That keeps the console’s gaming video signal out of an audio device’s video passthrough unless you have verified that exact device can handle the signal.

Do not buy by HDMI version number or a feature badge alone. Check the capabilities of the specific TV model, size and input you will use—and decide whether OLED contrast, brighter-room performance, Dolby Vision gaming, flexible speaker placement or fewer cables matters most to you.

What should you prioritize when choosing a 4K gaming TV and sound system?

Start with the signal path and port map, not the biggest resolution or refresh-rate logo. For a premium console setup, confirm that a TV input can accept 4K at 120Hz and VRR, that the TV can switch to a low-latency mode, and that the audio connection supports the formats you want. Then compare picture performance in the room where you will play.

These are separate questions. A TV may accept a 120Hz signal but have picture characteristics you dislike in a bright room; a soundbar may connect through eARC yet not decode every format you care about; and an HDMI 2.1 label does not establish that every port supports every desired gaming feature. The goal is a compatible chain of console, input, cable, display, audio return connection and sound system.

  1. Gaming input: Which HDMI ports accept 4K/120Hz and VRR?
  2. Latency: Does the TV support a gaming or ALLM mode, and how is it enabled?
  3. Picture and room: Do contrast, brightness, reflections, viewing angles and motion suit your seating and lighting?
  4. Audio: Does the TV’s eARC passthrough and the sound system’s decoding support your preferred formats?
  5. Capacity: Are there enough suitable HDMI ports left for consoles and other devices after accounting for eARC?

Make this checklist before comparing specific models. It helps distinguish a genuine fit from a specification that applies only to another input, size or device type.

Do I need HDMI 2.1 for a PS5 or PS5 Pro?

PlayStation documents PS5 HDMI 2.1 support and 4K/120Hz video output. To use that capability, however, the display, selected HDMI input, cable and any device between console and TV must all support the needed signal. A 120Hz TV also does not make every game run at 120 frames per second: the game must offer a mode that outputs at that rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PlayStation’s PS5 4K and 120Hz guidance recommends checking that the TV supports the relevant resolution and refresh rate, selecting the correct input, and checking the TV’s manual and firmware if the signal does not work. This advice is useful for PS5-family setups, including when deciding whether a TV is appropriate for a PS5 Pro; verify the exact console and display configuration rather than treating a port label as a guarantee.

For Xbox Series X, use the same practical approach: verify the capabilities of the console, specific TV input and any intervening equipment. If Dolby Vision gaming is a priority, confirm that the particular TV supports it. It is a meaningful differentiator for some Xbox buyers, but not a requirement for 4K/120Hz gaming itself.

Which TV port supports 4K at 120Hz and VRR?

Check the TV’s port-by-port specifications and manual. Do not assume that every HDMI input has the same bandwidth or features, or that the port labeled eARC is also the best input for a console. Write down which inputs support 4K/120Hz and VRR, which port handles eARC, and how many gaming devices you need to connect.

Also verify whether ALLM is supported. ALLM can select a low-latency display mode, but PlayStation cautions that HDMI 2.1 branding alone does not guarantee ALLM; consult the TV manual. A Game mode may still be available when automatic switching is not, so check the TV’s interface and instructions.

Port availability can affect the whole setup. For example, RTINGS reports four HDMI 2.1-bandwidth ports on the reviewed 42-, 48-, 55- and 65-inch LG C6 models. Its roundup identifies two 4K/144Hz-capable HDMI 2.1 ports on the TCL QM6K. These are model-specific examples, not a rule for every TV in either range; check the exact size and regional model you are considering. A port count matters most when you have multiple consoles and do not want to unplug one to make room for another.

If eARC takes one of your TV’s HDMI connections, account for that before choosing a TV with few gaming-capable inputs. You can still use the TV-first wiring plan: the console uses a suitable gaming input, while the eARC connection returns audio to the sound system. But the other inputs’ actual capabilities and the TV’s audio passthrough remain important.

How do OLED and bright-room LCD TVs differ for gaming?

OLED is a strong candidate for dark-room play, where deep blacks, contrast and fast motion are priorities. A bright-room LCD may be a better match for a window-heavy room, but LCD models differ in contrast, blooming, viewing angles and motion response. Neither category is an automatic winner for every room.

RTINGS’ review of the LG C6 describes excellent dark-room contrast and fast gaming motion, while noting that direct reflections can be visible. It also discusses cumulative burn-in risk from repeated static elements such as a game HUD. That is a risk to weigh against your use, not a reason to claim OLED burn-in is inevitable. If the same games stay on screen for long sessions, consider how much static interface content you expect and compare the manufacturer’s care guidance for the exact model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For LCD alternatives, assess how the screen handles bright highlights and dark scenes, whether objects against dark backgrounds create distracting blooming, and whether the picture holds up from your actual seats. RTINGS describes the Hisense U7SG as more suited to brighter rooms than OLED while having weaker motion performance. The TCL QM6K is another lower-price example in its roundup, with picture-quality compromises. Treat these as illustrations of trade-offs, not a universal ranking for every size or region.

Measure the wall or stand and consider the layout of your seating before choosing a screen size. The available data does not establish one ideal viewing distance for all viewers and rooms, so avoid relying on a universal distance rule. If several people watch from off-center seats, viewing angle may matter more than the best picture from one central position. If the TV faces a window or lamp, think about reflections before prioritizing black level alone.

Which example TVs illustrate the trade-offs?

Use model examples to understand what to verify, not as a substitute for checking current availability, the precise model code and size, or a particular input’s capabilities. RTINGS’ TV roundup updated October 20, 2026 includes the Samsung S95H OLED and LG C6 OLED among higher-end choices, and the Hisense U7SG and TCL QM6K as lower-price alternatives.

Example What the cited research says What to verify for your setup
LG C6 OLED RTINGS reports strong dark-room contrast, fast motion, four HDMI 2.1-bandwidth ports on the reviewed 42-, 48-, 55- and 65-inch models, and Dolby Vision support. The review notes direct reflections, cumulative static-element burn-in risk and no DTS passthrough. Check your exact size and regional variant. The review cited here covers those sizes; larger C6H sets are a different variant. Confirm the TV’s audio passthrough if DTS matters.
Samsung S95H OLED RTINGS reports four HDMI 2.1 ports, VRR and low lag, and up to 4K/165Hz PC capacity. It does not support Dolby Vision. Do not interpret a PC-oriented 165Hz maximum as a console promise above 120Hz. If you want Dolby Vision gaming, consider another model that explicitly supports it.
Hisense U7SG RTINGS identifies it as a brighter-room-friendly LCD alternative, with weaker motion performance than OLED. Compare the specific size’s reflections, motion, contrast and viewing-angle behavior in the context of your room.
TCL QM6K RTINGS reports two HDMI 2.1 ports capable of 4K/144Hz, along with picture-quality compromises. Confirm that those inputs are sufficient for your consoles and that the trade-offs fit your priorities.

These examples show why a maximum refresh-rate figure does not tell the whole story. A TV’s 144Hz or 165Hz PC capability does not mean a console sends a signal above 120Hz. For console buying, make sure the input supports the console’s intended signal, then judge motion and picture quality separately.

Model findings can also have boundaries. RTINGS’ C6 review is about identified screen sizes, and a differently named larger variant should not be assumed to share every specification. Regional names, revisions and port capabilities can differ. Recheck the manufacturer’s specifications and manual for the exact model before purchase.

How should you connect a soundbar or AV receiver without losing gaming features?

For the least complicated gaming signal path, connect the console directly to a TV input that supports the features you want, then connect the TV’s eARC-labeled HDMI port to the sound system’s eARC port. Enable eARC in the TV’s sound settings if necessary. This lets the TV send audio back to the soundbar or receiver without relying on the audio device to pass the console’s video.

Console ──HDMI──> TV gaming input
TV eARC port ──HDMI──> Soundbar or AV receiver eARC port

HDMI eARC is designed to return audio from a TV to an audio system, including supported high-bitrate and uncompressed multichannel formats. But the standard alone does not guarantee that every combination will pass every format. Check the exact TV’s passthrough support and the audio device’s decoding capabilities. For instance, RTINGS reports no DTS passthrough on the LG C6; a device’s eARC label does not remove that TV-specific limitation.

Choose a soundbar if compact installation and fewer separate components matter most. Confirm eARC on the exact bar, verify its supported audio formats, and decide whether optional subwoofer or rear-speaker expansion fits your room. The research here does not establish a ranked soundbar model, so treat these as selection criteria rather than recommendations for a particular product.

Choose an AV receiver and speakers if you want a more configurable multichannel layout and can place and wire separate speakers. PlayStation’s audio settings let users designate an AV amplifier, choose the channel count and adjust speaker positions. If you connect the console to the receiver first, verify that the exact receiver input and output support the desired 4K/120Hz, VRR and HDR combination. Do not assume that every eARC receiver passes every high-frame-rate video signal. If those capabilities are uncertain, connect the console to the TV and use eARC for audio instead.

eARC and Dolby Atmos are related to different parts of the chain: eARC is an audio-return connection, while the source, TV passthrough and sound system still have to support the desired format. PlayStation support material updated July 24, 2026 states that PS5 supports Dolby Atmos and gives a format-setting path. That does not mean every game or device combination will produce Atmos; confirm the format options and capabilities of the specific title, console, TV and audio system.

Do you need a new HDMI cable?

Not automatically. PlayStation recommends the cable supplied with the console. If you need an additional or replacement cable for a 4K/120Hz connection, choose a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and use a length and route that suit your installation.

HDMI Licensing Administrator says the Ultra High Speed HDMI category covers up to 48Gbps and requires each cable length to be tested and certified. Certification is more useful than buying based on a version number printed in a listing. HDMI 2.2 is the most recent specification described by HDMI Licensing Administrator, with an Ultra96 option rated up to 96Gbps; that is not a requirement for these console setups. The number does not substitute for checking the features the console, display and connection need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For guidance, see the official HDMI 2.2 overview and the Ultra High Speed HDMI cable certification document. A higher maximum bandwidth is not itself a reason to replace a working, appropriate cable.

How do you set up and verify the system?

Check the installed system after wiring; a product specification does not tell you what signal the connected chain actually negotiated. Use a game or system display that offers a 120Hz mode, and verify the console and TV report the expected mode.

  1. Map the ports. Identify the TV inputs that support 4K/120Hz and VRR, and mark the eARC connection. Connect the console to a suitable gaming input.
  2. Connect audio. Run HDMI from the TV’s eARC port to the soundbar or receiver’s eARC port. Enable eARC in the TV menu if it is not active.
  3. Set display behavior. Check the TV’s Game mode or ALLM settings. On PS5, review the relevant ALLM and VRR options in the console’s video settings, and consult the display manual if automatic low-latency switching does not occur.
  4. Configure PS5 audio if applicable. In PS5 audio output settings, select the connected device type, set the amplifier channel count and speaker positions when using an AV receiver, and select the preferred Audio Format (Priority).
  5. Confirm audio. Check that the sound system receives the intended format, and listen for picture-to-dialogue synchronization. If the chosen format is unavailable, check the format support of the source, TV passthrough and audio device rather than assuming eARC alone is enough.
  6. Check firmware and isolate faults. If 4K/120Hz does not appear, check that the TV firmware is current and that the correct input and cable are being used. PlayStation also recommends bypassing intermediary devices to isolate the problem. Connect the console directly to the TV; if the signal then works, investigate the receiver, soundbar or other device in the video path.

For PS5-specific resolution and signal troubleshooting, use PlayStation’s 4K resolution guide. The intended outcome is not merely a menu that says “120Hz” but a compatible chain that negotiates the mode when a game or system feature supports it.

What should you check before settling on a model?

  • Exact model and size: Confirm the full model name, screen size and regional version. Do not apply the specifications of one size or variant to another without evidence.
  • Specific input: Identify the port that supports the console’s target resolution, refresh rate and VRR. Check whether eARC reduces the number of free gaming inputs.
  • Room conditions: Consider reflections, daylight, viewing angles and how often you play in a dark room. Compare LCD and OLED trade-offs rather than assuming one display category suits every room.
  • Game behavior: A TV’s 120Hz input is useful for games that offer a compatible mode; it does not force every game to render at 120 frames per second.
  • HDR preference: If Dolby Vision gaming matters for Xbox, confirm it on the exact TV. Samsung S95H’s lack of Dolby Vision does not mean it cannot handle 4K/120Hz gaming.
  • Audio formats: Check both the TV’s passthrough and the sound device’s decoding. Pay particular attention to any format you rely on, including DTS or Dolby Atmos.
  • Video route: If the console passes through an AVR or soundbar, verify the exact input and output support the combination you need. Otherwise, prefer console-to-TV plus eARC.
  • Firmware and cable: Use the included cable if appropriate, or a certified Ultra High Speed cable for an additional or replacement run. Check firmware if the expected signal is missing.

RTINGS’ public C6 review describes low input lag but does not expose a numerical input-lag measurement in its public table. No millisecond figure is included here. More generally, do not treat an unattributed latency number or a refresh-rate maximum as proof of how a complete console setup will perform.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a 120Hz TV mean every PS5 game runs at 120 frames per second?

No. The TV can accept a 120Hz signal, but the game must offer a mode that outputs at that rate. The console’s output capability and a game’s actual rendering mode are separate things.

Can I use a soundbar and keep VRR?

Yes, a straightforward option is to connect the console directly to a VRR-capable TV input and send audio from the TV’s eARC port to the soundbar. This avoids depending on the soundbar’s video passthrough; if the console goes through the bar, verify its exact input and passthrough specifications.

Is Dolby Vision gaming available on every 4K/120Hz TV?

No. Dolby Vision support is a separate feature from accepting a 4K/120Hz signal. For example, RTINGS reports that the Samsung S95H lacks Dolby Vision while listing its 4K/120Hz-class gaming capabilities.

Can eARC carry DTS audio from an LG C6?

RTINGS reports that the LG C6 does not pass DTS. The eARC connection’s general format capabilities do not override a limitation in a specific TV’s passthrough.
