Choose Warhammer 40,000 if you want grim science fiction, Space Marines, aliens, and vehicles; choose Warhammer Age of Sigmar if fantasy realms, magic, monsters, and heroic champions appeal more. Neither is the universally better beginner game. The strongest first choice is the setting and miniatures you will want to build, paint, and play with.
If you are comparing the two because you are new to tabletop Warhammer, you do not need to commit to a full army before finding out which appeals to you. Both games have official beginner products and introductory support. Start by deciding which world you would most enjoy spending time in, then check what a current starter box actually includes and whether you can find local help or opponents.

What is the difference between Age of Sigmar and 40K?
They are separate Games Workshop tabletop miniatures systems, not expansions of one another. The most important difference for a new player is the fictional world: 40,000 is science fiction set in the far future, while Age of Sigmar is fantasy set in the Mortal Realms.

That setting choice is more than a lore preference. Each game has its own factions, models, stories, and visual style, so it shapes the miniatures you will browse, build, paint, and use in play. If you already know which universe interests you, that is a practical starting point. There is no need to pick the game that someone else says is objectively better before considering what you will enjoy collecting.
Both are tabletop miniatures games from Games Workshop, but their starter products and rules materials are for their own systems. A purchase for one is not simply an expansion for the other. Choose a beginner product that is explicitly for the game you mean to learn.

Warhammer 40,000: a science-fiction future
Choose 40K if the appeal is a grim far-future universe, with factions such as Space Marines and alien forces, plus the visual language of guns, tanks, and other vehicles. If the 40K setting is already the reason you are considering the hobby, that interest is a sound reason to start there.
Think about the models as well as the fiction. Perhaps you are drawn to Space Marines, perhaps to alien forces, or perhaps the vehicles and science-fiction look are what make the game stand out. The models you want to build and paint are a better guide than assuming every new player should choose the same faction or box.
Age of Sigmar: fantasy in the Mortal Realms
Choose Age of Sigmar if you would rather collect fantasy armies and meet conflicts shaped by magic, monsters, gods, and heroic champions. Games Workshop describes it as “a game of strategy, fast-paced combat, and devious ploys on the hidden battlefields of the Mortal Realms.”
If that combination of fantasy setting and miniatures sounds more inviting than a science-fiction future, Age of Sigmar is a natural first choice. Look at the specific factions and models in current boxes, not only the name of the game: the miniature range is part of the experience, and you will spend time with those models outside a game as well as during one.
Which game should a beginner start with?
Start with the one whose factions and individual miniatures you most want to build and paint. Both systems have official beginner products, so you do not need to assemble a full army from unrelated boxes before you can begin.

- Choose 40K if you find yourself saying, “I want Space Marines,” “I prefer science fiction,” or “I want to play in the 40K universe.” The same goes if the far-future setting, aliens, guns, or vehicles are the main draw.
- Choose Age of Sigmar if you prefer fantasy, want monsters and magic, or are drawn to the Mortal Realms, gods, and heroic warriors.
- If you are undecided, try an introductory game and look at the current starter products in person before committing to a collection.
There is no evidence-based reason to call one system categorically easier for every newcomer. Your preferred setting, the models that motivate you, and access to local help are more useful deciding factors than a broad claim that one ruleset is automatically the beginner option.
To make the choice concrete, ask yourself three questions. First, which setting would you rather read or hear more about: science fiction in the far future, or fantasy in the Mortal Realms? Second, which specific miniatures would you be excited to assemble and paint? Third, can you find a nearby store, stockist, or club where someone can show you an introductory game? If one game wins clearly on the first two, start there. If the settings are a tie, local support may help you decide.
That is a more useful beginner test than trying to settle a universal “which is easier?” debate. A game is a better first fit when you want to explore its models and setting and can get help learning how to play. The available beginner options in both systems give you a way to start without first buying a collection assembled from separate boxes.

Begin with the smallest current official box that gives you a coherent, playable introduction to the game you have chosen. Compare the contents of the available boxes rather than choosing by box size alone: the right purchase is the one that supports the first experience you want without committing you to a larger collection prematurely.
Before buying, identify what you want the first box to do. Are you looking for a compact entry into the game, or do you specifically want the materials for a named mode such as Age of Sigmar’s Spearhead? Then check the current product listing for its contents. The name “starter set” alone does not tell you which format, materials, or forces are in the particular box currently offered.
Starting with Warhammer 40,000
Games Workshop’s getting-started page presents a Warhammer 40,000 Starter Set and free core rules, alongside introductory support. A 2026 Games Workshop starter announcement describes its new Starter Set as a “complete game in a box.” Check the current product listing to confirm the exact contents of the edition available where you shop.
Combat Patrol-oriented materials are another beginner-facing part of the 40K entry landscape. Compare the actual contents and intended play experience of the current products; the available information does not establish a universal price or say that one format is the right choice for every new player.

In practice, decide whether the current Starter Set is the kind of first experience you want, then compare its listed contents with any Combat Patrol-oriented option you are considering. Do not assume that a box with a particular format name automatically suits your plans: check what is included and how the product is described. The free core rules and introductory support can also help you find out what resources are available before you expand beyond a starter purchase.
Starting with Age of Sigmar
The official Age of Sigmar Starter Set is described as including miniatures, paints, and rules. Games Workshop also offers larger starter options, including an Ultimate Starter Set for Spearhead, a game mode whose set is described as containing two forces, a gaming mat, dice, terrain, and mission-related materials. Check the current listing for precise contents before purchasing, because product details can change.
The choice here is not simply between a smaller and a larger box. Consider whether the included forces and materials match how you want to begin, and whether Spearhead is the format you are seeking. The Ultimate Starter Set description identifies a more specific collection of components for that mode; the Age of Sigmar Starter Set description identifies miniatures, paints, and rules. Confirm the current listing rather than relying on a remembered box description.
What to compare on the box
- Whether the box gives you a coherent first experience, rather than only models you would need to supplement immediately.
- Which factions and specific miniatures it includes, and whether you actually want to build and paint them.
- For Age of Sigmar, whether the included materials suit the Spearhead format if that is the way you want to begin.
- The current contents and local price. Prices and stock are volatile, so confirm both with the seller rather than relying on an old listing or printed guide.
- Whether the product is for the game you chose. These are separate systems, so a starter box for one is not a substitute for the other game’s rules and beginner materials.
If you want to keep the first purchase modest, resist the urge to buy extra boxes before you know which faction or game experience you enjoy. The practical recommendation is to start with one official beginner product, learn what it offers, and expand only when you have a reason to do so. Current prices and availability are not established here, so check the retailer you plan to use instead of relying on an old price or assuming that a product is in stock.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How much do local stores and clubs matter?
Local support can matter more to a newcomer than abstract rules comparisons. A nearby Warhammer store, independent stockist, or established club may make it easier to learn the basics, find opponents, and get help with the first models.
Games Workshop’s getting-started material promotes stores and stockists as places where newcomers can learn, paint a free miniature, and play an introductory game. If both settings appeal, ask a local venue whether it offers an introductory session and which game local players currently support. An available opponent and a welcoming first session can help break a tie between two settings you like equally.
An introductory game is also a low-commitment way to see how the tabletop side feels before choosing a box. You can ask what a beginner product includes, get a closer look at models, and find out whether the venue can help you learn. Games Workshop stores and stockists are not the only possible source of local support; an independent stockist or an established club may also be useful if it is convenient for you.

If you are choosing between two equally appealing settings, local support is a sensible tiebreaker. Find out where you can try a game and meet players rather than assuming that one system will be easier to start in everywhere. A venue that can offer an introductory session is a more useful guide to your own next step than a general ranking of the two games.
How should you handle rules updates?
Check the official downloads for the game you choose rather than assuming a printed rulebook contains every current clarification. Games Workshop’s official downloads areas for both systems publish FAQs and errata, and those pages were updated in October 2026.
This matters when a printed rule and a later clarification do not line up: use the current official rules materials for the question at hand. The relevant downloads page is also the place to check again when rules change, instead of treating an older book as permanently complete.
The same habit applies whether you choose 40K or Age of Sigmar. Look for the downloads area for your particular game and check its FAQs and errata when you need clarification. Since rules materials can be updated, do not assume that an old printed book or a second-hand explanation will always include the latest answer.

Not at the start unless you already know you want to take on both. Each system has its own setting, factions, models, and rules materials, so buying into both immediately can divide your time and hobby budget before you know which experience suits you.

This is not a rule that you must never collect both. It is a way to keep the first decision focused: pick the world that excites you, find an entry point for that game, and see how the hobby fits your time and budget. A simple decision checklist
- Choose the setting. Pick the far-future science fiction of 40K or the fantasy Mortal Realms of Age of Sigmar.
- Choose the models that motivate you. Look at the factions and miniatures in the current beginner products and ask which you would most enjoy building and painting.
- Find a way to try it. Ask a nearby Warhammer store, stockist, or club about an introductory game, especially if both settings appeal.
- Compare current boxes. Check the exact contents, format, price, and availability with the seller or current Games Workshop listing.
- Start focused. Buy one suitable beginner product for one game, then expand once you know what you enjoy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to know Warhammer lore before I start?
No detailed knowledge of either setting is needed to make the initial choice: begin with the world and miniatures that interest you. An introductory game at a store or stockist can help you see how the tabletop experience works before you invest in a collection.
Can I use my Age of Sigmar miniatures in Warhammer 40,000?
The systems are separate games with different settings and faction ranges, so a model from one is not automatically an army choice in the other. Choose a starter product for the rules and game you intend to play.
Do I need to buy a whole army before I can play?
No. Both games have official beginner entry points, including starter products intended to provide a coherent way in. Check the current box contents to see what experience it supports before expanding your collection.
Is Warhammer 40K or Age of Sigmar better for beginners?
Neither is categorically better for every beginner. Choose 40K if science fiction and its miniatures appeal most, or Age of Sigmar if you prefer fantasy and the Mortal Realms. Local opportunities to learn and find opponents can also help decide.
Which Warhammer starter set should I buy?
Choose a current official beginner product for the game you want to play, then compare its exact contents and intended experience. The 40K Starter Set and Age of Sigmar Starter Set are official entry points; Age of Sigmar also has a larger Ultimate Starter Set associated with Spearhead. Check current listings because contents, prices, and availability can change.
Where can I try Warhammer before buying a starter set?
Games Workshop’s getting-started material promotes stores and stockists as places to learn, paint a free miniature, and play an introductory game. You can also ask a nearby independent stockist or established club whether it offers a way to try the game.
Are the rules in a printed book always up to date?
Not necessarily. Games Workshop’s official downloads areas publish FAQs and errata for both games. Check the current materials for the system you play rather than assuming an older printed rulebook includes every clarification.
The Bottom Line
For most beginners, the right first game is the universe they already want to spend time with. Choose Warhammer 40,000 for grim science fiction and the far future, or Warhammer Age of Sigmar for fantasy in the Mortal Realms. If neither has a clear edge, try an introductory game at a Warhammer store or stockist, then buy the smallest current starter product that supports the experience you want. Start with one game and one entry point; expand after you know you enjoy it.
