The Xbox Series X is a powerful, fast console, but it can become a regrettable purchase when buyers expect a deep lineup of exclusive games, want to avoid subscriptions, underestimate storage costs, or are upgrading from an Xbox One X. It remains a strong choice for Game Pass subscribers, large backward-compatible libraries, and players with a 4K/120Hz display. The decision depends less on headline teraflops than on how you play, what you already own and the total cost over several years.

Is Xbox Series X worth it without Game Pass?

A subscription can provide broad access, but it is an ongoing expense and its catalog and policy can change.
A simple ownership calculation
- Write down the Series X price you would pay.
- List the games you would buy at full price without a subscription.
- Estimate how many months you would keep Game Pass.
- Add likely storage expansion if your library is mostly digital.
- Compare that total with buying another platform or keeping your current Xbox.
Readers who prefer owning a small permanent collection may get less value from the Series X’s service-led proposition. Frequent players who sample many games can benefit more from the subscription model.

Does Xbox Series X have enough storage?
The standard Series X includes a 1TB custom NVMe solid-state drive. That sounds substantial until several large current-generation games are installed. Reviewed’s Lee Neikirk reported having 95.8% of the drive filled with 15 games installed, illustrating how quickly a digital library can consume the usable space.
Expansion choices and cost
Microsoft says Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Cards match the internal drive’s performance. They are sold separately, and full-speed expansion has historically been expensive: WIRED reported a Seagate 1TB card launching at £219.99 in the UK in 2020, close to half the console’s launch price. That is historical launch pricing, not a current universal price.
Search for the compatible accessory category as “Xbox Series X|S 1TB Storage Expansion Card.” Check the current price before purchase because accessory pricing varies by region and date.
What happens if you do not expand?

Is upgrading from Xbox One X worth it?
For an existing Xbox One X owner, the improvement can feel incremental rather than transformational. Tech Advisor wrote that, apart from the solid-state drive, most players had little reason to upgrade at launch. Android Authority likewise reported that the upgrade case was not compelling when many games also ran on older Xbox hardware.
Microsoft’s US recommended-price document dated May 1, 2025 listed $599.99 for the standard Series X, $549.99 for the Digital model and $729.99 for the 2TB special edition. Prices and availability can change, so treat those figures as dated reference points rather than permanent prices.

When the upgrade is easier to see
- You have a 4K display and want true 4K output.
- Your television or monitor supports up to 120Hz and the game supports higher frame rates.
- You value much faster loading from the NVMe SSD.
- You want the current console’s support for newer releases while retaining backward compatibility.
When the upgrade feels smaller
- You play on a 1080p screen or a display that cannot show 120Hz.
- Your existing Xbox One X already runs the games you care about.
- You are satisfied with slower loading and do not need additional storage speed.
Compare the improvement you will actually see on your display with the price you will pay. A newer console is not automatically a meaningful upgrade for every Xbox One X household.
Does the Series X fit comfortably in a living-room setup?
The standard console measures 15.1 × 15.1 × 30.1 cm and weighs 9.8 lb. Digital Trends has flagged difficulty fitting it in many audio/video cabinets, and Tom’s Guide also lists the large, heavy design as a drawback.

Measure the shelf, allow room for ventilation and check whether the console can stand in its intended orientation before buying. A tight cabinet can turn a hardware advantage into an everyday irritation.
What does Xbox Series X still do well?
The regret case should not obscure the console’s strengths. Microsoft’s specifications list true 4K gaming, up to 120 frames per second, a 1TB NVMe SSD and a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive on the Carbon Black model. Tom’s Guide praised its power, fast loading and backward compatibility, while noting the small launch lineup and large chassis.

The Series X is therefore a good fit when you already use Xbox services, have a substantial backward-compatible library, want a disc drive, or own a 4K/120Hz display. It is a less convincing purchase when exclusive games, minimal recurring costs, compact furniture or a dramatic Xbox One X upgrade are your priorities.
