The best free logo mockup is the one that matches the way your identity will be seen and gives you a file you can legally edit and deliver. Paper, card, 3D and broader branding scenes serve different presentation jobs. Most downloadable choices are layered PSD files built around Photoshop Smart Objects, while some libraries provide browser editing or files for Figma and Sketch. This guide gives you a 25-plus-scene selection framework, identifies the concrete free examples whose published specifications are available, and shows how to check dimensions, software compatibility and licensing before you download.

What is a free logo mockup template?

A logo mockup is a prebuilt scene that shows your artwork on a material or branded object instead of on a blank artboard. The template supplies lighting, perspective, texture and shadows; you replace its placeholder logo with your own mark. The result helps a client understand how an identity may look on paper, stationery, cards or a dimensional surface.

“Free” describes the download price, not automatically the rights. A file can permit commercial client work while prohibiting resale or redistribution of the editable source. Treat the license, file format and software requirement as separate checks for every item.

Which 25-plus logo mockup scenes should you consider?

There is no reliable, permanent ranking of 25 individual downloads: files, dimensions and licenses change, and a catalog page may describe a collection rather than one current asset. Use the following 26 options as a practical shortlist of scene types. The named examples later in this article are the ones with published specifications; for every other scene, confirm the exact item page before relying on it.

16 Shallow-depth 3D scene Subtle emboss or raised-mark effect Whether depth is adjustable rather than baked in
17 Deep-depth 3D scene Dramatic hero image Render quality at your intended output size
18 Neutral-background scene Client decks that need easy text placement Background replacement and transparent-export options
19 Texture-forward scene Material or craft-oriented brands Texture opacity controls and whether the texture is licensed
20 Light-on-dark scene Testing reversed logo artwork Contrast, knockout behavior and alternate-color layers
21 Dark-on-light scene Testing the primary logo colorway True background color controls and print-preview usefulness
22 Portfolio-ready square export Online case-study thumbnail Native pixel dimensions and crop safety
23 Wide presentation scene Website header or slide-deck banner Aspect ratio and usable negative space
24 Close-up detail scene Inspecting fine lettering or an icon Resolution and anti-aliasing at 100 percent view
25 Full-brand application scene Explaining how the identity works in context Which applications are editable and whether people or products are included
26 Browser-plus-source workflow Fast online edits followed by desktop refinement Whether the service lets you download an editable source or only a raster export

Items 8 through 11 describe file or editing methods rather than visual scenes, so they can overlap with any material above. That overlap is useful: a paper scene in PSD may be right for one team, while the same presentation in a browser editor is better for another.

How do PSD Smart Object logo mockups work?

A Smart Object is an embedded or linked layer that receives your artwork while the template preserves perspective, lighting and effects. The exact layer names differ, but the basic process described by the template pages is consistent.

  1. Open the PSD in a compatible Photoshop release. Check the listing first; the Gitu card scene specifies CS6 or later, while its perspective 3D scene specifies CS5 or later.
  2. Locate the marked Smart Object layer. It may be named “Your logo,” “Place artwork” or something similar. Do not paint directly over the rendered scene unless the instructions expressly require it.
  3. Open the Smart Object. Double-click its thumbnail in the Layers panel. A separate document opens with the placeholder artwork.
  4. Replace the placeholder with your logo. Paste vector artwork when possible, scale it without cropping and preserve the intended color mode. Keep a copy of the original layer if you need to test multiple colorways.
  5. Save the Smart Object document. Use the save command for that embedded document, then close it or return to the main PSD.
  6. Inspect the rendered composition. Check edges, small lettering, contrast, reflections and shadows at 100 percent. A mockup can make a technically correct logo appear soft if the source is too small.
  7. Adjust only exposed controls. Many files separate background, shadow, highlight, depth and color layers. If a control is not clearly editable, do not assume it can be changed safely.
  8. Export a presentation copy. Keep the layered PSD privately and export the format your client or portfolio requires. The license for the source file may forbid sending that PSD to others.

Mockups Design describes its paper workflow succinctly: “You only need to paste your logo project into Smart Object layer and you’re good to go.” That statement explains that particular file; it is not a guarantee that every PSD uses identical layer names or steps.

Can you edit a logo mockup without Photoshop?

Yes, but only when the specific template or service supports it. LS Graphics says some free mockups can be edited online and lists PSD, Figma and Sketch among its formats, with additional formats for certain scenes. Creatsy also provides a browser editor for its editable mockups. Browser workflows are convenient for quick approvals, but supported uploads, export resolution and source-file access vary by item.

When a browser editor is the better choice

  • You need a quick client preview and do not have a compatible desktop Photoshop installation.
  • You are working in a team that already uses a service’s online editor.
  • You only need a raster presentation image, not the layered source.

When a desktop or native design file is safer

  • The mark contains fine lettering that needs inspection at full resolution.
  • You need repeatable color, depth or shadow adjustments across several scenes.
  • Your handoff requires an editable PSD, Figma or Sketch source and the license permits that handoff.

How should you compare dimensions and software requirements?

Record the native pixel dimensions before choosing a scene. A 5,000 × 3,750-pixel card file gives you more room for a large portfolio image than a smaller, unspecified download, but dimensions alone do not prove quality. Confirm whether the stated size is the rendered canvas, the Smart Object, or both.

What does “free for commercial use” really allow?

A commercial-use permission normally addresses the finished work you create, not ownership of the mockup source. LS Graphics says its free files may be used in personal and commercial projects but may not be resold, redistributed or shared as source files. Mockups Design similarly allows client work while restricting distribution of its files in open formats. Creatsy says commercial use is subject to its stated limits and directs users to each product page. DesignersLab notes that licenses are set by individual creators and that roughly half of its branding catalog is personal-use only.

Use this per-item checklist:

  • Finished-image rights: May you show the rendered mockup in a client presentation, portfolio, website or advertisement?
  • Attribution: Is a credit required? Some listings, including the cited Mockups Design and ProLine descriptions, say no attribution is required, but that does not establish a catalog-wide rule.
  • Source-file handling: Can you send the layered PSD to a client or contractor, or must you deliver only a flattened image?
  • Redistribution: Are resale, re-uploading, file-sharing, or inclusion in another template collection prohibited?
  • Modification: May you alter the background, scene or embedded assets, and are those altered source files still restricted?
  • Expiration and updates: Is the permission perpetual, and do updated terms apply to an existing download?

Save a copy of the license page or terms with the project record, including the access date. If the page is unclear, choose a different file or ask the creator for written clarification before commercial delivery.

How do you choose the right scene for a logo presentation?

Start with the audience

For a conservative identity review, a paper or flat-card scene keeps attention on spacing and legibility. A 3D scene is more persuasive when the client needs to imagine signage, packaging or a physical mark, but dramatic depth can hide alignment problems. A broader branding scene is useful when approval depends on seeing the identity across several applications.

Match the scene to the logo geometry

Wide wordmarks need a scene with horizontal space; compact symbols can tolerate a square crop. Test the smallest lettering at 100 percent before exporting. If the template forces severe perspective or curvature, present a flat version as well so the client can judge the actual artwork.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use more than one scene deliberately

A small set is usually stronger than a pile of unrelated effects: one neutral presentation for accuracy, one material or card scene for context, and one dimensional scene for a hero image. Keep lighting direction and color treatment consistent so the mockups look like one case study.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What are the common problems and fixes?

The PSD will not open

Compare your application version with the listing. The two Gitu examples show why this matters: one calls for CS6 or later and the other CS5 or later. If your editor is older, request a compatible export or use a browser editor that explicitly supports your file.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The logo looks blurry

Replace the placeholder with a larger raster or vector source, then inspect the Smart Object and final canvas at 100 percent. Do not enlarge a tiny bitmap inside a high-resolution scene and expect the mockup to restore missing detail.

The perspective is wrong

Keep the artwork inside the Smart Object’s intended bounds and avoid changing its document dimensions unless the template instructions permit it. A perspective scene can distort a logo by design; use a flat or square-card scene for a geometry check.

Colors do not match the brand guide

Check the template’s color, gradient, highlight and blend-mode layers. Export a controlled proof and compare it with the original logo file; a tinted paper or lighting layer can make a correct color appear different.

You cannot find the license

Do not infer permission from a catalog banner or from another file on the same site. Open the individual product page, read its terms and retain a dated copy. If the creator identifies the file as personal-use only, do not use it for paid client work.

The download is part of a larger paid set

A free scene can be a legitimate standalone file or a limited sample. Mockup Cloud describes its free logo scene as part of a wider paid logo-mockup set, so confirm exactly what is included and whether the free file has independent usage terms.

What is the safest workflow for a client presentation?

  1. Define the presentation job: accuracy check, material context, dimensional hero image or a broader brand application.
  2. Shortlist two or three scene types from the 26-option map rather than downloading every effect.
  3. Record each file’s dimensions, formats, required software and license in a project note.
  4. Download from the creator’s current item page and scan the PSD for Smart Objects, hidden dependencies and missing fonts or linked files.
  5. Insert the approved logo artwork, preserve a clean master and export a flattened presentation image.
  6. Review legibility, contrast and crop at the exact size your client will see.
  7. Deliver only the files the license and your agreement permit; keep the source mockup private when redistribution is restricted.

Are free logo mockups worth using?

They are worthwhile when speed, context and a low-cost presentation matter more than a bespoke photoshoot. The strongest choices combine a scene that fits the identity with a documented license, adequate pixel dimensions and an editor your team can actually use. Do not call a template “best” solely because it is free, popular on a catalog page or bundled with a larger collection; verify the item-level facts first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a free logo mockup in a paid client pitch?

Usually only if that specific file permits commercial use. Check whether the permission covers presentations and portfolio images, and whether it bans redistribution of the layered source; commercial use of the finished image does not automatically grant source-file rights.

Do I need to credit the creator of a free mockup?

Some listings explicitly waive attribution, while others require it or leave the rule to the individual creator. Read the item license rather than assuming that every free file on a catalog has the same attribution policy.

What should I do if my design app cannot open the PSD?

First compare your application version with the template requirement; the published Gitu examples require Photoshop CS6 or CS5 or later respectively. If upgrading is not practical, choose a scene with a supported browser, Figma or Sketch workflow and verify what export quality it provides.

Is a browser-edited mockup as editable as a PSD?

Not necessarily. A browser editor may provide only a rendered export, while a PSD preserves separate lighting, shadow and background layers. Confirm whether the service lets you download an editable source and what formats the particular scene supports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many mockup scenes should a logo case study show?

A focused set is generally more persuasive than a gallery of unrelated effects: use a neutral accuracy view, one contextual material or card view and, when useful, one dimensional hero scene. Select scenes that answer the client’s presentation question instead of repeating the same logo treatment.
