If you want the closest match to God of War Ragnarök, start with Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Horizon Zero Dawn, or Ghost of Tsushima: all pair cinematic third-person action with a memorable hero and deliberate combat. For a mythic boss-fight spectacle, choose Black Myth: Wukong on PS5; for a story built around a parent-and-child bond, choose The Last of Us Part II. The best fit depends on what you want to carry over—weighty melee, a character-driven journey, myth, or demanding fights.

This list ranks games by how closely they match the 2018 reboot and Ragnarök, not by review scores alone. Platform availability matters: Ragnarök is listed for PS4, PS5, and PC, while several newer recommendations are PS5-only.

Which games feel most like God of War Ragnarök?

The closest matches preserve several parts of Ragnarök’s formula at once: cinematic third-person presentation, readable but substantial melee, exploration, and a hero’s personal journey. Jedi: Survivor, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Ghost of Tsushima are the strongest starting points, but each replaces a different part of Kratos’s experience.

1. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor — closest for cinematic melee

Jedi: Survivor is the best pick if you want a third-person adventure built around a hero’s evolving combat toolkit. Cal Kestis uses lightsaber combinations and Force abilities in arena fights, with parrying, stagger, traversal, and light puzzles between encounters. Its over-the-shoulder presentation and journey across a richly realised setting make it a close structural cousin to the Norse games, even though its science-fiction world and faster blade combat are very different from Kratos’s axe-and-shield style.

Game Scout’s 2026 listing gives it 4.3/5 from 56,157 ratings and an estimated playtime of about 17 hours. The game launched on 28 April 2023 for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series; it is not a PS4 release. GameRant reported that its launch was rocky and that the PS5 version was much smoother later, while PC performance and bugs contributed to a mixed player response. Choose it for the combination of cinematic action, exploration, and skill growth—not as a promise of identical combat.

2. Horizon Zero Dawn — closest for a mythic-scale hero’s journey

Horizon Zero Dawn trades Kratos’s close-range weapons for Aloy’s bow, traps, and tactical hunts against machines. The connection is the shape of the adventure: a compelling lead, a mysterious world with mythic scope, and cinematic storytelling. Its encounters reward identifying enemy weaknesses and preparing the right tools, rather than relying on a shield parry or axe combo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Game Scout calls it the best mythic epic in this group and reports a Metacritic score of 89. It is available on PS4 and PS5. It is the most natural choice if Ragnarök’s world-building and sense of uncovering a larger history mattered more to you than matching its melee feel.

3. Ghost of Tsushima — closest for duels and lone-warrior weight

Ghost of Tsushima follows Jin Sakai during the Mongol invasion of Japan. Its stance-based sword combat, lethal duels, and dramatic standoffs make individual fights feel deliberate and consequential. The open world is more expansive than Ragnarök’s realm-to-realm structure, and its story is about a warrior’s code rather than a father and son, but it shares the serious tone and cinematic framing.

Game Scout reports a 4.6/5 rating from 314,294 ratings and Metacritic 83; GameRant’s widget rated it 9/10. It is available on PS4 and PS5. Choose it for the strongest samurai alternative, especially if you want a composed open world alongside its duels.

Which game matches Ragnarök’s story and companion drama?

The Last of Us Part II is the closest choice if what stayed with you was the emotional pressure of travelling with someone, not the Norse setting or Kratos’s weapons. It is a harsh, character-led story rather than a mythic action RPG, so expect a very different tone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. The Last of Us Part II — best for character drama

Ellie’s journey through a ruined Seattle makes this the strongest companion-drama recommendation. Its cinematic presentation and brutal close-quarters encounters connect it to Ragnarök’s mix of story and action, but its post-apocalyptic setting and survival focus create a more grounded, often more punishing experience. The story’s direction has polarized players, so it is a better fit for readers who welcome emotionally difficult narrative choices than for anyone seeking a straightforward heroic adventure.

Game Scout reports Metacritic 93 and a 4.53/5 rating from more than 300,000 ratings. The game is rated Mature and is available on PS4 and PS5; the PS5 remaster is a separate release, listed by Game Center as arriving on 19 January 2024 with a Metascore of 90. If the central appeal of Ragnarök was watching relationships change under pressure, this is the most direct alternative.

Which games deliver the biggest mythic boss fights?

For spectacular enemies and mythic imagery, Black Myth: Wukong is the clearest pick. Final Fantasy XVI is another option when you want huge set pieces, while Assassin’s Creed Odyssey offers Greek myth in a much more open-world format.

5. Black Myth: Wukong — best for mythic boss spectacle

Inspired by Chinese mythology and the Journey to the West tradition, Black Myth: Wukong casts you as the Destined One. Its staff-based dodging and spectacular boss fights are the main draw; it is not a direct axe-and-shield clone, and its combat emphasis differs from parry-heavy games. Justlike Games describes its structure as handcrafted chapters, a useful distinction if you are deciding between it and a sprawling open world.

Game Scout calls it the best choice for boss battles and reports 4.5/5 from 217,881 ratings. 50gameslike gives it a review score of 86, and Game Center reported a How Long to Beat figure of 39 hours in August 2026. Those are source-reported figures, not a promise that every player’s completion time or rating will match. It is available on PS5 and PC, not PS4. GameRant’s 2025 description makes the design emphasis plain: “While Black Myth: Wukong has its fair share of regular enemies, most people would agree that the focus of this game is on the spectacular boss fights.”

6. Horizon Forbidden West — best for giant enemy encounters

Horizon Forbidden West carries Aloy’s story into a larger adventure, with ranged weapons, skills, and equipment to acquire as you explore. The giant robotic beasts and their targetable weak points are the closest thing here to Ragnarök’s readable, multi-stage monster encounters, but the moment-to-moment combat remains tactical and ranged rather than melee-first.

It is available on PS4, PS5, and PC. Nerd Flakes listed it at about $69.99 in 2026; treat that as a dated approximate list-price snapshot, not a live store quote. The game is rated Teen by ESRB for blood, language, alcohol, and violence.

7. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey — best for Greek mythology in an open world

If you want gods and legendary creatures more than Ragnarök’s intimate pacing, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey brings Medusa, the Minotaur, and Cyclops into a broad version of the Peloponnese. Game Scout reports Metacritic 85, an estimated 31-hour playtime, and a 4.5/5 player rating from 100,310 ratings. It is available on PS4 and PC. The trade-off is scale: this is an open-world role-playing adventure, not a tightly authored cinematic journey.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Final Fantasy XVI — best for oversized set pieces

Final Fantasy XVI is a PS5 action RPG with spectacular Eikon battles and a combat system shaped by a director known for stylish action. It is a good fit if you want boss fights staged at blockbuster scale. The sword combat can lean heavily on Eikon abilities, so it is less about the controlled weight and defensive choices that define Ragnarök.

Which games are best for parries, combos, or a harder challenge?

Combat is the biggest dividing line among God of War lookalikes. Pick Stellar Blade or Sekiro for timed defense, Nioh 2 or Elden Ring for a demanding action-RPG challenge, and Devil May Cry 5 if you want fast, stylish combos rather than Ragnarök’s deliberate weight.

9. Stellar Blade — best for precise parries and modern action

Stellar Blade follows Eve in a ruined future Earth and centers on perfect blocks, precise dodges, and aggressive pressure. It has a sleek presentation and powerful fights, but its combat asks for tighter reaction timing than Ragnarök’s broader mix of attacks, skills, and defense. Justlike Games notes that players drawn to it often want the parry timing rather than the setting.

Game Scout reports 4.8/5 from 92,374 ratings and an estimated 22-hour playtime. It launched on PS5 in 2024 and came to PC in 2025; it is not a PS4 game. TechTudo listed it at R$349,90 on PS5 in Brazil on 24 October 2026. For more demanding deflection combat, look to Sekiro; for a focus on boss spectacle, choose Black Myth: Wukong.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

10. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice — best for mastering deflection

Sekiro makes posture management and well-timed deflects the center of combat. It rewards learning an enemy’s rhythm rather than building a broad set of weapon-and-shield options, and its difficulty is far less forgiving than Ragnarök’s. Game Scout reports Metacritic 90 and an estimated 16-hour playtime. Its PS4 version plays on PS5; it is also available on PC.

11. Nioh 2 — best for stances, loot, and co-op

Nioh 2 layers stance changes, loot, and yokai abilities into demanding fights. That makes it a strong pick if you like Ragnarök’s weapon variety and want a much denser build-and-combat system, though it is more punishing and mechanically busy. Game Scout reports Metacritic 85 and a 4.5/5 player rating from 33,052 ratings. It supports three-player co-op and is available on PS4, PS5, and PC.

12. Elden Ring — best for exploration and difficult bosses

Elden Ring offers formidable bosses and a vast world, but it does not guide the player through an authored, continuously cinematic journey in the way Ragnarök does. Its open-ended exploration and cryptic storytelling are part of the appeal. Choose it if you want to find your own route and build, not if you want a tightly paced story with frequent companion scenes.

It is available on PS4 and PS5. Nerd Flakes listed it at about $59.99 in 2026, an approximate list-price snapshot rather than a current offer. Shadow of the Erdtree is an expansion, not a separate game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

13. Bloodborne — best for dark fantasy and aggressive melee

Bloodborne shifts the combat toward fast, aggressive close-range fights in a dark fantasy world. It is a good choice if you want dangerous encounters and a strong atmosphere, but its older, more cryptic structure and demanding combat are a significant departure from Ragnarök’s guided adventure. Game Scout reports Metacritic 92, a 4.7/5 rating from 290,724 ratings, and an estimated 12-hour playtime. It is a PS4 game that plays on PS5.

14. Lies of P — best for perfect-guard combat

Lies of P is a soulslike action RPG with perfect guards and a weapon-assembly system that combines parts. It belongs on the list for players who want to learn enemy timing and refine a melee approach, not for those looking for a similar story or setting. Game Center reports a Metascore of 84 and a How Long to Beat figure of 20 hours. It is available on PS4 and PS5.

15. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty — best for deflection in a Three Kingdoms setting

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty brings deflection-first fights to a fantasy version of the Three Kingdoms period. It shares the appeal of mastering combat through timing, but its emphasis on deflection makes it a more specialized recommendation than the closest cinematic matches. It is available on PS4 and PS5, as well as Xbox and PC.

16. Devil May Cry 5 — best for fast, stylish combos

Devil May Cry 5 is the right answer if by God of War you mean the older Greek-era games’ faster, combo-heavy action. It is not especially similar to the Norse reboot’s deliberate combat or cinematic pacing. GameRant notes that it can scratch the old-God-of-War itch, alongside Stellar Blade. Nerd Flakes listed it at about $39.99 in 2026 for PC and PlayStation 4/5; that is an approximate list-price snapshot.

What if you want a longer fantasy world or an older God of War feel?

Some good recommendations share only one part of Ragnarök’s appeal. Choose them when the setting, length, or older combat style matters more to you than reproducing the complete modern formula.

17. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — best for a sprawling fantasy story

The Witcher 3 is a better match for players who want a richly developed fantasy world and long-form storytelling than for those seeking Ragnarök’s combat. Game Scout reports 4.83/5 from more than 280,000 PlayStation ratings and Metacritic 92. Those figures make it the highest-rated game in that source’s group of likes, but the combat is a potential sticking point: Steam reviews cited by Game Scout describe it as clunky. It is available on PS4 and PS5, and Nerd Flakes listed it at about $59.99 in 2026.

18. Darksiders Warmastered Edition — best for old-school God of War DNA

Darksiders Warmastered Edition puts War, a giant blade, colossal bosses, and Zelda-style dungeon puzzles together in an action-adventure. It is the closest fit here if you specifically want a throwback to the older, more combat-forward God of War games. Game Scout reports Metacritic 79 and a 4.6/5 rating from 13,574 ratings; it is available on PS4 and PC.

19. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice — best for an intimate Norse vision quest

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice follows Senua into Helheim in a Viking-age story that puts her experience of psychosis at its center. Its slow, brutal fights and personal scale make it more intimate than Ragnarök, and it is not a substitute for a broad action-RPG combat system. Game Scout reports Metacritic 83 and an estimated six-hour playtime; 50gameslike gives it a review score of 88. It is available on PS4 and PC, and its PS4 version plays on PS5.

20. Evil West — best for arena-to-arena brawling

Evil West is a Weird Western action game with visceral melee and ranged combat, an over-the-shoulder camera, and fights arranged around arenas. GameRant describes it as a particularly direct modern-God-of-War-formula cousin, though its exploration is more limited. It is available on PS4 and PS5, PC, and Xbox Series.

Which newer PS5 games should Ragnarök fans look at?

Several recent games extend the cinematic-action lane, but they do not all match the same part of Ragnarök. Check platform and release status before choosing: many newer options in this group do not have PS4 versions.

Ghost of Yōtei

Ghost of Yōtei is a PS5 follow-up in the same broad samurai-action lane as Ghost of Tsushima. It follows a new protagonist, Atsu, in 1603 Ezo, with a revenge story and a sharpened version of that series’ formula. The Reading Order ranked it fourth among its 2026 action games; GameRant also names it as a fit for God of War fans.

Marvel’s Wolverine

Marvel’s Wolverine is a released 2026 PS5 exclusive, with a linear, story-first campaign rather than an open-world structure. Its adamantium-claw combat, optional stealth, and boss fights may appeal if you want a brutal action adventure. The Reading Order reports a Metacritic score of 77 and says critics faulted its combat for not matching the depth of the Spider-Man games, while praising fights, the lead performance, and bosses. TechTudo listed it at R$399,90 on PS5 in Brazil on 24 October 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Phantom Blade Zero

Phantom Blade Zero was scheduled for 29 October 2026 on PS5 and PC in The Reading Order’s 27 October listing. That source describes protagonist Soul as framed for murder with 66 days to live, and lists 30 primary weapons and 25 secondary weapons. GamesLikeNet pitches it as a parry-focused kung-fu-punk action game, but that is editorial positioning, not an established review consensus; no day-one review score is available in the cited material.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II brings one-on-one duels and an unbroken camera to a Viking Iceland setting of giants and slavers. Game Scout reports a 4.55/5 rating from around 1,500 PlayStation ratings and says the PS5 version has been available since August 2025. Its strengths are mythology, sound design, and presentation; the combat is simpler and the experience more linear than the first game. It is PS5-only among the PlayStation choices discussed here.

Which recommendations work on PS4?

If you are staying on PS4, several of the strongest matches remain available, but some of the newest action games require PS5. These platform distinctions refer to native game listings; PS4 games in the list can also be played on PS5 through backward compatibility.

Phantom Blade Zero was scheduled for PS5 and PC on 29 October 2026.

For a PS4-first shortlist, start with Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Zero Dawn, The Last of Us Part II, or Elden Ring, depending on whether you want duels, a mythic journey, character drama, or open-ended exploration. Jedi: Survivor, one of the closest overall matches, is not available on PS4.

How were these games chosen?

The ranking weighs closeness to the 2018 reboot and Ragnarök rather than treating every action game as interchangeable. The main criteria are:

  • Combat identity: deliberate melee and defense, parry and posture timing, ranged machine hunts, or stylish combo chains.
  • Story and presentation: a character-led journey, a companion relationship, mythic stakes, or cinematic set pieces.
  • Structure: authored, cinematic progression versus open-world exploration, chapter-based boss encounters, or arena-focused action.
  • Platform access: whether a recommendation has a PS4 version or requires PS5.
  • Evidence and fit: listed release platforms and source-reported ratings or playtime are used as context, not as a substitute for similarity or as claims of hands-on testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I play God of War (2018) before Ragnarök?

It is the direct predecessor and establishes Kratos and Atreus’s relationship before the sequel. If Ragnarök is still on your to-play list, playing the 2018 game first gives the family story more context.

Are any of these games included with PlayStation Plus?

Game Scout’s 2026 listings tagged some titles, including The Last of Us Part II and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, with PS Plus Extra, and marked trials for some others. Catalogues change by date and region, so check the current PlayStation Plus catalog before subscribing for a specific game.

Is Phantom Blade Zero’s release date confirmed here?

The cited October 2026 listing scheduled it for 29 October on PS5 and PC, but the available material did not include day-one reviews or a verified release-day update. Treat its availability as something to confirm in your regional store.

Which game on this list supports co-op?

Nioh 2 is listed with three-player co-op. That makes it a useful choice if you want to tackle a demanding action RPG with other players rather than follow Ragnarök’s primarily solo journey.
