If you have one evening and want a complete game rather than an endless campaign, start with Journey, A Short Hike, INSIDE, Donut County or Superhot for roughly two hours. For a longer session, What Remains of Edith Finch and Abzû take about three hours, Firewatch and Pikuniku about four, while Man of Medan and A Way Out fill five to six hours. These are editorial averages, not guarantees: exploration, retries, optional content and—in Man of Medan—which characters survive can change the total.

The list below uses GamesRadar+ completion estimates and Nintendo’s 2022 definition of a short game as one that can be completed in eight hours or less. Treat the time bands as planning tools, then choose by mood, platform and whether you are playing alone or with someone else.

What are the best games for a single sitting?

The most dependable choices are the games whose average completion times fit comfortably inside your actual window. The table gives the complete shortlist first; detailed sections explain the experience and the ways each game can run longer.

Game Average completion estimate Platforms listed by the sources Core experience What can extend the session
Journey 2 hours PS4, PC, iOS Wordless, cryptic expedition with seamless online encounters Taking time to explore the route and surroundings
A Short Hike 2 hours Xbox One, PS4, PC, Switch Climbing and gliding through Hawk Peak Provincial Park Fishing and hidden treasures
INSIDE 2 hours PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch Narrative platforming, stealth and environmental puzzles Retries when solving or navigating difficult sections
Donut County 2 hours PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch, iOS, Android Swallowing objects with an expanding hole Repeating puzzles or lingering over interactions
Superhot 2 hours PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS VR, Switch Action in which time moves only when you move Failed attempts and replaying encounters
What Remains of Edith Finch 3 hours PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch Short family vignettes with varied gameplay Exploring the Finch home and replaying scenes
Abzû 3 hours PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch Wordless underwater journey and visual storytelling Swimming away from the critical path to take in the environment
Firewatch 4 hours PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch Wyoming wilderness adventure centered on Henry and Delilah Taking extra time to investigate and move through the wilderness
Pikuniku 4 hours PC, Xbox One, Switch Comic writing, puzzles and mini-games Optional mini-games and experimentation
Man of Medan 5 hours; roughly 4–6 hours depending on survivors PS4, Xbox One, PC Choice-driven horror with online or local co-op Different survival outcomes and replay routes
A Way Out 6 hours PS4, Xbox One, PC Two-player split-screen prison-break adventure Mini-games and the pace of both players

GamesRadar+ supplies the estimates in this table. Nintendo’s 2022 roundup uses a broader ceiling of eight hours or less, so every title here falls within that practical definition even though the shorter games leave more room for breaks.

Which games can I finish in under two hours?

Choose this group when your window is tight or you want a self-contained experience before bed. The listed averages are around two hours, but they describe a typical completion rather than a timer or a promise.

Journey

Journey is the best fit when you want atmosphere and discovery without dialogue-heavy exposition. It is a wordless, deliberately cryptic expedition, and its seamless online encounters let another player appear during the trip without turning the experience into conventional voice-chat co-op.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its structure makes it easy to begin and finish in one session: you follow a clear overall journey while deciding how much attention to give the environment. The lack of spoken explanation means the meaning of scenes is something you interpret, so players who enjoy atmosphere more than explicit instructions are likely to get the most from it.

A Short Hike

A Short Hike follows Claire, a bird climbing and gliding through Hawk Peak Provincial Park. The central goal is straightforward, but the park invites detours; fishing and hidden treasures are the main reasons a focused run can become a longer, more leisurely visit.

Pick it when you want a gentle, exploratory mood rather than danger or pressure. You can treat the summit as your finish line or use the same session to wander, collect discoveries and try different routes through the park.

INSIDE

INSIDE is a narrative-driven platformer about a hunted boy avoiding detection and solving environmental puzzles. Its appeal comes from the contrast between quiet movement, sudden danger and puzzles that ask you to read the space around you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is a strong choice for a concentrated session because the story and mechanics keep moving forward without a large open-world checklist. Allow extra time if you tend to retry a puzzle or a stealth section until you understand exactly what the game is asking.

Donut County

Donut County builds its entire loop around an expanding hole that swallows objects. What begins with small items grows into larger, more playful interactions, giving the game a clear sense of progression without requiring a long commitment.

Choose it for a lighter, humorous session. The two-hour estimate assumes a normal pace; experimenting with objects, revisiting interactions or replaying a section can stretch the evening, but the basic campaign remains compact.

Superhot

Superhot is an action game with one defining rule: time moves only when you move. That turns every step, aim and attack into a decision, creating a stop-start rhythm unlike a conventional shooter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It works well when you want intensity in short bursts. The estimate reflects a successful route through the encounters; failed attempts and replays can add time, especially while you learn how movement and timing interact.

What should I play if I have three to four hours?

This middle band gives you enough time for a more developed narrative or a broader setting while still fitting an evening. These games also benefit from a little breathing room for exploration rather than demanding that you rush from objective to objective.

What Remains of Edith Finch

What Remains of Edith Finch presents a series of bite-size family vignettes, each using a different style of gameplay. The variety is the point: instead of repeating one mechanic for several hours, the game changes how you interact as you move through the family’s stories.

It suits players who want a narrative-led experience with regular shifts in pace. The average is about three hours, but moving carefully through the Finch home or revisiting scenes can make the session longer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Abzû

Abzû is a wordless underwater journey built around visual storytelling and interaction rather than spoken exposition. Swimming, observing and responding to the environment carry the experience, so it is a natural pick for a calm, contemplative session.

The critical route is compact, while players who pause to explore the underwater spaces may spend longer. Select it when you want the visual sense of travel without combat or a large inventory of tasks.

Firewatch

Firewatch is a Wyoming wilderness adventure centered on the relationship between Henry and Delilah. Their conversations provide the narrative momentum as you move through the setting, making the game feel like a focused journey rather than an open-ended survival simulation.

Its four-hour average fits an evening in which you want a stronger story arc. The wilderness setting still gives you reasons to investigate and look around, so your pace and curiosity matter more than a strict sequence of objectives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pikuniku

Pikuniku combines distinctive writing with puzzles and mini-games. Its tone is playful, but the variety means the session is not just a single repeated activity; you move between story beats, problem-solving and optional diversions.

Choose it when you want comedy and mechanical variety. The estimate assumes a straightforward run, while trying every mini-game or experimenting with puzzle solutions can add extra minutes.

Which games fit a five-to-six-hour session?

Use this band when you have most of a day or a long evening and want a more substantial arc. Both choices below can be completed in one sitting according to the listed averages, but they are built around different player arrangements.

Man of Medan

Man of Medan is a choice-driven horror game whose length depends partly on who survives. GamesRadar+ gives it a five-hour average and a broader four-to-six-hour range, so the outcome of your decisions directly affects the amount of story you see.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It supports both online and local co-op, making it the choice for a shared horror session. Because survival outcomes can differ, a first run is not the only possible route; replaying with different decisions can produce a meaningfully different experience and a different total time.

A Way Out

A Way Out is designed for two players and tells a prison-break story through split-screen co-op. The two characters’ actions are presented together, so each player can see what the other is doing while progressing through the same sequence of events.

Its mini-games provide breaks from the main story and give both players small activities to try. The six-hour estimate assumes a pair moving at a normal shared pace; conversation, experimentation and waiting for a partner can make the session longer than a solo estimate would suggest.

How reliable are “one-sitting” completion times?

They are useful planning estimates, not standardized measurements. GamesRadar+ lists average completion times for these titles, while Nintendo’s 2022 roundup simply defines its scope as games that can be completed in eight hours or less.

There is no industry-wide runtime standard behind labels such as “two hours” or “short game.” A player who follows the main route may finish near an average, while someone who searches for optional discoveries, retries difficult sections or plays more cautiously can take longer. Man of Medan is an especially clear example because character survival changes the length of a run.

“We’d like to help! So, we’ve gathered a list of games that can be completed in eight hours or less.”

— Nintendo, 2022

Nintendo also emphasizes that the point is possibility, not speed: you do not have to finish these games quickly, only that you can. That distinction matters when planning a real evening; leave a buffer instead of scheduling the final minute of the estimate as your stopping time.

How do I choose the right game for the time I have?

Start with the time you can genuinely protect, then filter by mood, player count and tolerance for detours. The following process avoids picking a game whose format conflicts with your evening.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Set a realistic window. Count the time available for playing, not the entire period between dinner and bedtime. If you have roughly two hours, choose one of the compact games rather than assuming you can complete a four-hour average by rushing.
  2. Decide whether you want direction or wandering. INSIDE, Superhot and Donut County provide tightly defined interaction loops. A Short Hike, Journey and Abzû leave more room to absorb the setting.
  3. Choose the emotional register. Quiet and reflective options include Journey and Abzû; playful options include Donut County and Pikuniku; tense or unsettling sessions point toward INSIDE, Superhot or Man of Medan; relationship-focused storytelling points toward Firewatch.
  4. Check the player arrangement. Most entries are suitable for solo play. Man of Medan offers online or local co-op, while A Way Out is built specifically for two players and uses split-screen co-op.
  5. Match the platform before committing. Availability differs: some titles include iOS or Android, some include PS VR, and others are listed only for consoles and PC. Use the platform column rather than assuming every short game is available on your system.
  6. Reserve a buffer. Add time for retries, exploration, loading, conversation and the possibility that your chosen game’s average does not match your personal pace. A buffer turns a nominally finishable game into a finishable plan.

What can make a short game run longer?

A published average usually reflects a relatively direct completion path. Your own total can increase for several predictable reasons:

  • Optional exploration: A Short Hike includes fishing and hidden treasures, and Abzû invites players to look around its underwater spaces.
  • Puzzle or action retries: sections in INSIDE and encounters in Superhot may take several attempts while you learn the solution or timing.
  • Investigating the environment: the wilderness of Firewatch and the Finch home in What Remains of Edith Finch reward a slower look at the setting.
  • Optional activities: Pikuniku contains mini-games, and Donut County can invite experimentation beyond the fastest solution.
  • Branching outcomes: Man of Medan can last roughly four to six hours depending on which characters survive, and later runs can follow different outcomes.
  • Co-op pacing: in A Way Out, two players need to coordinate movement and decisions, so the shared pace determines when the story advances.

These are not defects or inaccurate estimates; they are the normal difference between a main-path average and a personal playthrough.

Which game is the best match for each kind of evening?

Use this quick decision guide when several titles fit your available time.

If you want… Start with… Why it fits
A wordless, atmospheric journey Journey or Abzû Both rely on visual or environmental storytelling instead of long spoken explanations.
A relaxed exploration game A Short Hike The summit gives you a clear goal while fishing and hidden treasures support detours.
Stealth and environmental puzzles INSIDE The hunted-boy premise connects movement, avoiding detection and puzzle solving.
Something playful and light Donut County or Pikuniku One centers on swallowing objects; the other mixes writing, puzzles and mini-games.
High-focus action Superhot The move-to-advance-time rule makes every action deliberate.
A sequence of changing story vignettes What Remains of Edith Finch Each family vignette uses a different gameplay approach.
A conversation-led wilderness story Firewatch Henry and Delilah’s relationship anchors the Wyoming setting.
Shared horror and replayable decisions Man of Medan Local or online co-op combines with survival outcomes that can change between runs.
A two-player story from start to finish A Way Out It is designed for two players and uses split-screen co-op throughout.

How should I plan the session itself?

A little planning prevents a short game from becoming an unfinished game. Confirm the platform edition first, install or update it before the session, and start with enough time to absorb the opening rather than beginning immediately before you must leave.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Pick one primary game. Do not split a two-hour window between several titles; the setup and decision time consume part of the evening.
  2. Use the estimate as a lower-risk target, not a deadline. For a listed two-hour game, plan a little longer if you know you explore or retry sections.
  3. Decide your stopping rule. If you must stop at a fixed time, choose a game from the shorter band or leave a substantial margin before the end of your window.
  4. For co-op, agree on the commitment. Man of Medan and especially A Way Out work best when both players can stay for the same session; interruptions affect two people rather than one.
  5. Let optional content remain optional. The purpose of a one-sitting choice is a complete, satisfying route. Fishing, collectibles, mini-games and alternate decisions are reasons to return, not obligations that invalidate the first finish.

Are these games all within Nintendo’s eight-hour definition?

Yes. Nintendo’s 2022 roundup uses eight hours or less as its scope, and every title in this list has a listed average from roughly two to six hours. That does not mean every player will finish within eight hours, especially when optional exploration, retries or alternate outcomes are part of the appeal.

The eight-hour figure is therefore a useful outer boundary rather than a universal guarantee. If your available time is much shorter, use the specific two-, three-, four-, five- or six-hour estimates in the table and leave a personal buffer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does “one sitting” mean I have to play without pausing?

No. It is a planning description for a game that can fit into one available block of free time, not a rule that forbids breaks. Nintendo’s own wording frames the idea as being able to finish quickly, not being required to do so.

Are the listed completion times platform-specific?

The available figures are editorial averages from GamesRadar+ and are not broken out by console, PC or mobile edition. Differences in controls, performance or player habits can therefore make your personal result differ from the listed average.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which choice is safest when my schedule is unpredictable?

Pick one of the roughly two-hour games and keep a margin for retries or exploration. A shorter average gives you more room to stop naturally if an appointment, family obligation or technical delay interrupts the session.

Can I replay these games after finishing them once?

Yes, although the reason to replay varies. Man of Medan is explicitly affected by survival outcomes, while A Short Hike, Pikuniku and the other exploratory or vignette-based games can reward returning for optional discoveries or alternate ways of engaging with their spaces.
