If you like Vampire Crawlers for its card-driven combos, start with Slay the Spire; choose Monster Train 2 for elaborate build synergies, or Slay the Spire 2 if you want to try co-op in a sequel that is still in Early Access. Despite its action-minded name and fast turns, Vampire Crawlers is a first-person, turn-based dungeon-crawling roguelite deckbuilder—not a real-time wave-survival game. These picks each match a different part of it, so the right choice depends on whether you want cards, combo spectacle, first-person atmosphere, or hordes of enemies.

What makes a game feel like Vampire Crawlers?

Vampire Crawlers borrows its franchise’s monster-clearing premise but changes the way you act: it is a first-person dungeon crawler where you choose cards in turn-based combat. Its signature chain rewards playing cards in ascending mana order, and wild cards can extend the sequence. Poncle and Nosebleed Interactive describe the result as “Turn-based combat without the wait. Queue your moves instantly and let the game resolve them at full speed.”

That distinction matters when choosing a substitute. A conventional roguelike deckbuilder may match its card decisions but lack its first-person dungeon view and brisk resolution. An arena survival game may deliver a screen full of enemies and escalating builds, but not a hand of cards or a turn-by-turn combo. No one game below reproduces all of those elements.

Vampire Crawlers launched on April 21, 2026. Its official Steam listing describes the game and currently offers a demo. The launch announcement also identifies PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2; storefront availability can vary by platform and region. The recommendations here are organized around what they share with Crawlers, not a claim that they play identically.

Which games are closest if I want card battles?

Choose a conventional deckbuilder if the decisions that matter most are which cards to add, how to spend a turn, and how to make a run’s deck work together. These games are the closest matches to Crawlers’ card-combat foundation, even when their presentation and pacing differ.

1. Slay the Spire: the best starting point for card-combat runs

Slay the Spire is the clearest recommendation if you want the run-by-run card decisions that anchor Vampire Crawlers. Mega Crit’s game is built around drafting a deck, fighting encounters, and collecting relics. That makes it a good fit for players who enjoy weighing a card’s immediate use against how it could support a later build.

The difference is just as important: Slay the Spire does not offer Crawlers’ first-person dungeon presentation or its rapid card-resolution hook. Its appeal is the progression of decisions across a run, rather than a fast chain that turns rising card costs into a combo. Pick it for the card-battle structure, not as a promise of the same tempo or visual spectacle.

There is also a tabletop adaptation: Mega Crit acknowledges Slay the Spire: The Board Game, and Contention Games describes a physical edition with cards, miniatures, and boards. That is a separate way to engage with the property, not another video-game alternative.

2. Monster Train 2: the strongest pick for escalating synergies

Choose Monster Train 2 if your favorite Crawlers moments are the ones where a build starts to snowball. Its five new clans, unit and equipment cards, and three train levels to defend give you several pieces to coordinate. The Covenant Outpost adds further between-run systems, making it a strong fit for players who want more than a single deck to shape a strategy.

It is not a first-person dungeon crawl. Instead of moving through rooms and resolving card attacks against monsters from a first-person view, you position units and defend levels aboard a train. The shared pleasure is assembling combinations; the battlefield and the work those combinations do are different. A bundle pairing it with Vampire Crawlers appears on its Steam listing, but bundle terms can change.

3. Slay the Spire 2: a newer option with co-op

Slay the Spire 2 is the pick for players who want a newer deckbuilder and the option to play with others. Its new and returning characters, cards, and relics build on the series’ card-and-run structure, while co-op supports up to four players. The team format changes the decision-making from a solo run, so it is especially relevant if playing alongside friends is part of the appeal.

Its release status is a crucial caveat: Mega Crit launched it into Early Access on March 5, 2026. It is not a finished sequel, and no completion date should be assumed. Players who would rather wait for a completed release may prefer another option on this list. The official Vampire Crawlers Steam listing also shows a bundle with Slay the Spire 2; offers can change.

4. Wildfrost: slower, more deliberate companion tactics

Wildfrost suits players who enjoy setting up a plan and reading how a fight will unfold. You recruit card companions, equip charms, and pay attention to attack counters in countdown-driven battles. Developing Snowdwell between runs gives the game a progression layer outside an individual encounter.

That countdown structure makes it a thoughtful contrast to Crawlers’ fast turn resolution, not an equivalent action game. The connection is tactical card play and building a run; the pace asks you to study the board rather than chase a rapid sequence. Choose it if careful timing and companion placement sound appealing, not if your priority is first-person traversal or a hectic horde.

5. Roguebook: a deckbuilder built around two-hero synergy

Roguebook is worth considering if your interest is less about one character’s chain and more about a team whose abilities work together. Its publisher describes building a two-hero team and combining their cards, giving the deckbuilding a party-synergy emphasis.

It is a more conventional turn-based deckbuilder than Crawlers’ first-person dungeon adventure. The useful overlap is planning combinations across a run; the difference is that the central idea is interplay between two heroes, not the ascending-mana sequence. It is an additional option for players who have already identified card drafting as the part they want to keep.

What if I want combos or first-person atmosphere more than deckbuilding?

Some games match a particular sensation from Crawlers without matching its combat system. Look at Balatro for a build that grows into outsized card combos, Inscryption for unsettling first-person card-game atmosphere, or ANTHEM#9 for sequential combo chaining through a puzzle interface.

6. Inscryption: the closest pick for eerie first-person mood

Inscryption is the strongest choice here if you care about the combination of cards and an unsettling first-person presentation. Its developer describes card-based roguelike elements, puzzles, and psychological horror. Those ingredients give it a closer atmospheric connection to Crawlers than a standard card-battle interface would.

Go in expecting a different kind of experience. Its narrative and escape-room structure do not make it a straightforward, repeatable Crawlers run, and the appeal includes mystery as well as card play. It is best for someone open to a story-led, eerie game; there is no need to know plot details to understand the recommendation, and its surprises are better left unspoiled.

7. Balatro: for the pleasure of a combo that keeps scaling

Balatro strips away the dungeon and monster fight but preserves the appeal of making a build’s effects reinforce one another. Its poker hands, Jokers, and scaling synergies can turn a modest plan into a much bigger payoff. The publisher lists 150 Jokers, a measure of the game’s listed content rather than a comparison of depth or quality.

Choose it if “make the numbers and effects spiral” is what you mean by wanting another game like Crawlers. Do not choose it for first-person exploration, dungeon combat, or a horde of enemies: it offers no analogue to those features. This is the list’s combo-first recommendation, not a card-battler substitute in the same sense as Slay the Spire.

8. ANTHEM#9: for rapid sequential combos through a puzzle interface

ANTHEM#9 takes a different route to the satisfying chain. This February 2026 gem-match roguelite connects deck construction to timed, sequential gem-and-skill combos. Its main point of similarity is the excitement of lining actions up so one leads into the next.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The interface is a puzzle, not a first-person dungeon, and the attacks are not Crawlers-style card-driven combat. That makes it a more targeted recommendation than a general alternative: try it if you want to plan and execute fast combo sequences, while recognizing that its moment-to-moment activity is distinct.

Are there games like Vampire Crawlers with more horde action?

Yes, but the closest choices for horde combat are not close matches for Crawlers’ cards. Vampire Survivors and Brotato are better picks when automatic attacks, waves of enemies, and an arena-style build are more important than turn-based dungeon decisions.

9. Vampire Survivors: return to the franchise’s horde-clearing roots

Vampire Survivors is the obvious franchise connection, but it is not a like-for-like card battler. Its defining loop is auto-attacking survival, gathering experience, taking upgrades, and facing overwhelming enemy waves. That makes it the choice for the source game’s horde-clearing heritage, not for Crawlers’ hand management or ascending-mana card chains.

The contrast explains why fans of one may not be seeking the same thing as fans of the other. Crawlers turns its actions into selected cards and resolves them in turns; Vampire Survivors emphasizes surviving a field of enemies while attacks happen automatically. Choose by the loop you want to play rather than the shared name.

10. Brotato: action-first arena builds

Brotato is for players who want short-form horde combat and weapon combinations. Its overlap with Crawlers is the appeal of assembling a build and using it against a crowd, but the action is arena-focused rather than a card-based dungeon crawl.

There is no reason to treat it as a deckbuilding recommendation: its role here is specifically action-first. Pick it when you want an escalating arena encounter and a different kind of build planning. If your priority is drafting a hand or choosing a turn’s card sequence, start with one of the deckbuilders above instead.

How should I choose between these games?

Start with the part of Crawlers you want to preserve, then use the game’s presentation and pace as a tie-breaker. The following decision guide is more useful than treating every game with roguelike systems as interchangeable.

  • For card choices across a run: Start with Slay the Spire. It is the most direct match for drafting cards, fighting encounters, and collecting run-shaping relics.
  • For intricate combinations and progression: Choose Monster Train 2 if planning clans, units, equipment, and defended train levels sounds better than walking a dungeon.
  • For co-op: Consider Slay the Spire 2 if you are comfortable with Early Access. Its up-to-four-player mode is its clearest distinction from the other card-battle picks.
  • For careful board tactics: Pick Wildfrost for countdowns, companion positioning, and charms.
  • For a two-character team: Try Roguebook if combining two heroes’ cards is the key appeal.
  • For atmosphere: Choose Inscryption for first-person unease and card-game elements, with the understanding that its narrative structure is a major difference.
  • For escalating card synergies without monster crawling: Pick Balatro.
  • For sequential combos outside a card-battle interface: Try ANTHEM#9.
  • For waves and automatic attacks: Return to Vampire Survivors; for arena weapon builds, choose Brotato.

In short, “like Vampire Crawlers” can mean card combat, fast combos, a first-person mood, or horde action. The games that best deliver one of those qualities do not necessarily deliver the others.

How we picked

The recommendations are based on each game’s described mechanics and on how those mechanics relate to Vampire Crawlers: card combat, combo chaining, first-person presentation, horde survival, run progression, and co-op. The order favors a direct card-battle match first, then distinctive adjacent experiences and action-first alternatives. These are comparisons of the games’ stated features, not hands-on performance or difficulty rankings.
