Zoom does not offer a single consumer-facing switch that guarantees every participant is genuine. Its Meetings API exposes an auto_start_deepfake_detection Boolean whose documented default is false, while Zoom’s practical real-time detection pattern uses the Real-Time Media Streams (RTMS) API, an app, a backend and a separate detection model. Treat every alert as a prompt for identity and context checks, not as proof of fraud.
What Zoom’s deepfake setting actually does
The documented control is an API field named auto_start_deepfake_detection. Zoom shows its default as false. That means detection does not automatically start unless an eligible integration or account configuration enables it. The field is an API-level control rather than a fully documented, universal toggle in the ordinary Zoom web portal.

Administrators and developers should verify current account eligibility, app permissions, supported client versions and the current Meetings API documentation before designing a policy around this field. A setting appearing in the API does not by itself mean that every account, meeting type or regional tenant can use native detection.

What you can and cannot infer from the setting
- You can infer: an integration can request automatic startup behavior when the account and meeting support the feature.
- You cannot infer: that Zoom is continuously judging every participant, that an alert has a published accuracy guarantee, or that a complete point-and-click setup path exists for all customers.
- You should verify: who is allowed to enable the control, what media is transmitted, where processing occurs, how results are displayed and how data is deleted.
How the RTMS alert pipeline works
Zoom’s May 22, 2026 developer article describes a reference implementation rather than a turnkey consumer feature. With the April 2026 RTMS release, developers can subscribe to individual video streams as well as individual audio streams. The sample Zoom App uses that capability to inspect a selected participant.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Select a participant. The host or authorized operator chooses the individual stream to evaluate instead of automatically treating the entire meeting as one undifferentiated recording.
- Start RTMS. The Zoom App starts a Real-Time Media Streams session and requests the participant’s live audio, video or both, subject to the app’s permissions and the meeting’s technical conditions.
- Send media to a backend. The app forwards the stream to a service controlled by the developer. That backend is responsible for authentication, transport security, logging and access controls.
- Create short clips. The sample converts the live stream into short audio and video clips. Clip duration, encoding and buffering affect latency and the amount of media processed.
- Call detection models. The backend sends clips to video and audio models and receives scores or classifications.
- Display the latest result. The app shows the current outcome to the operator. A score is an analytical signal; it is not a legal or identity determination.
The sample uses two Hugging Face models as supplied. Zoom explicitly states that “The models are used as-is. They have not been fine-tuned or validated for production accuracy in this sample.” Developers can substitute their own model, a hosted inference API or an internal service, and can tune clip duration, encoding, thresholds, latency and result presentation.
What this architecture means for deployment
RTMS-based detection is an application workflow. It introduces a media path, a backend and a model provider that are separate from the ordinary Zoom meeting service. Your security review therefore has to cover the whole chain: Zoom permissions, app credentials, stream transport, temporary clip storage, inference-provider terms, operator access and deletion jobs.
How to turn on detection safely
Because Zoom does not publish one complete consumer web-portal click path for auto_start_deepfake_detection, use an implementation checklist rather than assuming a menu label exists.

- Confirm eligibility. Check the current Meetings API and RTMS requirements for your account, region, meeting type and client versions.
- Choose an integration. Decide whether you will build an RTMS Zoom App, use an internal service or evaluate a Marketplace application. Record whether it receives audio, video or both.
- Review permissions. Approve only the media and meeting scopes required. Identify who can install, configure, start and stop detection.
- Set the startup behavior. Where your approved API workflow supports it, set
auto_start_deepfake_detectiontotrue; otherwise leave the documented default offalseand start analysis explicitly from the app. - Define an alert policy. Specify what score or model output causes a soft warning, a human review, a re-authentication request or removal from a sensitive meeting. Do not copy a threshold from an unrelated model.
- Test with known media. Use consenting participants and representative lighting, cameras, microphones, bandwidth and accents. Record false alarms and missed detections before production use.
- Document retention. Set clip, score, log and screenshot deletion periods, and document who can export evidence.
- Train hosts. Hosts should know how to pause analysis, challenge a participant through a trusted channel and escalate without publicly accusing someone on the basis of one alert.
Alerts, confidence scores and false positives
The searched Zoom material does not publish a detector-specific false-positive rate, precision, recall or universal threshold recommendation. Marketplace descriptions likewise do not provide an independently verified common benchmark. An alert can therefore reflect unusual compression, poor lighting, a microphone artifact, an unfamiliar face, a voice characteristic outside the model’s training data or a genuine synthetic signal.
Zoom’s general AI limitation statement says that “AI outputs are not perfect, for a number of reasons” and may be “incorrect, inaccurate, misleading, or offensive.” Although that statement is not a detector-specific test result, it is a clear reason to require human review.
A practical response to an alert
- Keep the meeting calm. Do not announce that the participant is a deepfake solely because a score changed.
- Check the context. Compare the participant’s name, organization, meeting invitation, speaking pattern and requested action with information already known to the host.
- Use a trusted second channel. Call a previously verified phone number, use a known corporate directory or send a challenge through an established account. Do not use contact details supplied only in the suspicious meeting.
- Request a live action. Ask for an unscripted gesture, a turn of the head, a phrase chosen during the call or another action appropriate to the person’s accessibility and privacy needs. A challenge is an additional signal, not an infallible test.
- Pause high-risk decisions. Delay payment changes, credential resets, confidential disclosures or executive approvals until identity is confirmed.
- Record the decision. Preserve the alert time, model version, meeting context and human checks, while avoiding unnecessary copies of raw media.
- Escalate proportionately. Remove or report the participant when multiple independent indicators support that action, not because of an unexplained score alone.
Privacy: what Zoom’s commitment covers—and what it does not
Zoom says customer audio, video, chat, screen sharing, attachments and similar communications-like content are not used to train Zoom’s or third-party AI models. Zoom also says relevant data may be shared with third-party model providers when an AI feature uses them, and that availability can vary by region or industry vertical.

That training commitment is not a blanket retention promise for every detector. A third-party app may process meeting media to provide detection, may join as a bot or may receive streams through RTMS. Its permissions, geographic processing, retention and deletion terms are separate questions.

Privacy review checklist
- Read the app’s Marketplace permission list and identify whether it receives individual audio, individual video, recordings, participant metadata or chat.
- Determine whether the service joins the meeting as a visible bot, operates through RTMS or uses another connection.
- Find the stated retention period for raw media, extracted clips, scores, logs and support copies.
- Check processing locations, cross-border transfers and regional availability.
- Confirm administrator controls for enablement, participant notice, deletion and incident response.
- Ask whether your organization can disable processing for a meeting or participant and how a data-subject request is handled.
- Verify the current policy at deployment time; do not infer a vendor’s retention practice from Zoom’s general AI-training statement.
Built-in Zoom controls that reduce suspicious access
Deepfake analysis is only one layer. Zoom documents Web App bot protection as automatically identifying and intercepting automated or suspicious participants. The documented wording is: “Web App bot protection is enabled for all accounts by default and can’t be turned off.”
Hosts and administrators can also require sign-in, restrict access to specified domains and place guest users in a waiting room. These controls reduce unauthorized or automated entry, but they do not prove that the person behind an authenticated account or camera feed is genuine. Use them as admission controls alongside, not instead of, identity verification.

Marketplace approaches and what to compare
Several Marketplace listings describe different ways to add detection. Their descriptions are capability claims, not independent accuracy studies.
| Listing | Described capability | Questions to verify before deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Pindrop Pulse for Meetings | Real-time deepfake audio and video detection, right-human authentication, location-integrity checks and post-meeting analysis. | Which media permissions are required, how results are explained, and the retention and regional-processing terms. |
| Truly Authentication and Deepfake Detection | A host-created verification session, browser liveness flow, real-time outcomes labelled authentic, deepfake or tampered, plus device and location anomaly signals. | Whether every participant must complete the flow, how accessibility is handled, and what evidence is stored. |
| OmniSpeech AI Detect for Zoom | AI-generated or deepfake voice detection; its listing says the RTMS integration does not store meeting audio. | Confirm the current permission scope, whether derived clips or scores are retained, and whether the no-audio-storage statement still applies to your plan and region. |
| RealityCheck – Deepfake Prevention for Zoom | Phishing-resistant authentication, a badge on each video stream and a security side panel showing authentication claims; requires Beyond Identity authentication. | Check the external authentication dependency, participant enrollment, administrator controls and failure behavior when authentication is unavailable. |
For a fair deployment decision, compare media coverage, real-time versus post-meeting analysis, RTMS versus bot operation, liveness and identity checks, alert explanations, escalation tools, retention, geographic processing, administrator controls, client requirements and independently documented accuracy. The available material does not establish a common benchmark, so percentage rankings would be misleading.

No alert appears for a participant
Check that the app has the required individual audio or video permission, RTMS is running, the participant is selected, clips are reaching the backend and the model service is responding. A missing result can indicate a pipeline failure rather than a clean authenticity result.
The model produces frequent warnings
Review lighting, camera resolution, network loss, clip length, encoding and the model’s operating range. Keep a labeled set of consenting test examples, adjust thresholds only after measuring both false alarms and misses, and require a second-channel check for every high-impact decision.
Participants object to monitoring
Explain what media is collected, why it is needed, who processes it, where it is stored and when it is deleted. Offer a meeting or verification path that meets your policy without silently collecting additional media.

Use native API or RTMS controls when you have engineering support, need control over models and retention, and can operate a secure backend. Consider a Marketplace app when you need a packaged workflow, but perform the permission and privacy review yourself. For low-risk meetings, admission controls, known-channel callbacks and host training may be more proportionate than continuous media analysis.
In every case, write the operating rule before enabling detection: which meetings require it, who sees alerts, what evidence is sufficient, how participants are notified, how long data remains and who can override a model result. That rule is more reliable than treating an opaque score as a verdict.
