Zone Constant Angular Velocity (ZCAV) describes a disk arrangement in which the disk rotates at a constant angular rate while its recording capacity is organized into radial zones. In the common hard-drive explanation, outer tracks contain more sectors per track than inner tracks, so each revolution can pass more recorded data beneath the head at the outside of the disk.
What ZCAV means
ZCAV is a recording arrangement, not a disk type or retail product category. The disk maintains constant angular velocity—its rate of rotation—while the recording layout varies by radial zone. In hard-drive discussions, this means that tracks farther from the center can hold more sectors than tracks closer in. The larger circumference of an outer track provides room for those additional sectors.

The term is commonly expanded as “Zone Constant Angular Velocity” in hard-drive zone-recording material and in a USPTO classification schedule. The classification lists ZCAV alongside ZCLV as an example of zoned data areas; it is not a claim about performance. USPTO classification schedule.

Why outer tracks can transfer data faster
With more sectors on an outer track, a single revolution can carry more data past the read/write head than a revolution over an inner track. That can produce higher sequential bandwidth at the outside of a hard drive. It does not guarantee a particular speed: actual results depend on the drive and workload, and seeks can reduce throughput by moving the head between locations.

A Rice University thesis reports sequential read speeds above 110 MB/s and sequential write speeds approaching 100 MB/s for the particular commodity hard drive it tested, sustained over at least the first third of that drive. Those figures describe that test device, not a universal ZCAV benchmark. Rice University thesis.
How ZCAV differs from CAV, CLV, ZCLV, and PCAV
These terms describe what is held constant during recording and, in zoned methods, whether rotational speed changes at zone boundaries. The distinctions matter because ZCAV and ZCLV are not interchangeable.

| Method | What stays constant | What happens by radius or zone |
|---|---|---|
| CAV (Constant Angular Velocity) | Angular velocity | In Microsoft’s optical-writing description, write speed increases as the disc is written. |
| CLV (Constant Linear Velocity) | Linear velocity | Rotational speed varies with radius to maintain the linear speed. |
| ZCLV (Zone Constant Linear Velocity) | Angular velocity within each zone | Rotational speed changes at zone transitions. |
| ZCAV (Zone Constant Angular Velocity) | Angular velocity | In the common hard-drive account, sectors per track vary by zone; outer tracks hold more sectors. |
| PCAV (Partial Constant Angular Velocity) | Angular velocity after a target speed is reached | Microsoft describes speed rising until a specified velocity, then remaining there for the rest of disc writing. |
The ZCLV distinction comes from a patent that contrasts it with ZCAV: ZCLV holds angular velocity constant within a zone and changes it between zones. Optical-disc recording patent.

The expansion of ZCAV is not consistent across every source. Microsoft Learn’s optical-media documentation labels ZCAV “Zone Constant Linear Velocity,” calls it “an impure form of CAV,” and says: “The disc is divided into zones. After each zone, the write speed increases.” This conflicts with the common expansion “Zone Constant Angular Velocity” used in hard-drive zone recording. When reading about optical recording, check how the source defines ZCAV and distinguish it from ZCLV rather than assuming the acronym is used uniformly. The disk context matters: hard-drive discussions commonly use ZCAV for constant angular rotation with zone-based track capacity, while optical-media descriptions may use related zone-control terminology.
