Putting the ionic liquid EMI-TFSA inside the porous metal–organic framework ZIF-8 prevented the sharp conductivity drop associated with freezing in the bulk liquid. The 2015 study reported that the composite was more conductive than bulk EMI-TFSA below −20°C. The result points to a way of changing an electrolyte’s low-temperature behavior without chemically redesigning the liquid, but it was a laboratory finding—not proof of a battery-ready material.
What did the 2015 study find?
In “Low temperature ionic conductor: ionic liquid incorporated within a metal–organic framework,” Kazuyuki Fujie, Kazuya Otsubo, Ryuichi Ikeda, Teppei Yamada and Hiroshi Kitagawa examined EMI-TFSA held within ZIF-8. The paper appeared in Chemical Science in 2015 (DOI: 10.1039/C5SC01398D).

The researchers reported that bulk EMI-TFSA underwent a sharp conductivity decrease associated with freezing as it cooled. In contrast, EMI-TFSA@ZIF-8 showed no marked decrease in conductivity because the composite had no corresponding phase transition, according to the paper’s summary. Chemistry World reported that the composite was more conductive than the same bulk ionic liquid below −20°C. That comparison is reported without a specific conductivity value or percentage improvement.
How could ZIF-8 keep the ionic liquid from freezing?
The explanation is confinement, not simply that ZIF-8 lowers the liquid’s freezing point. ZIF-8 is a zinc 2-methylimidazolate framework, Zn(MeIM)₂, with cages connected by narrow windows. The proposed mechanism is that EMI-TFSA enters the cages and occupies separate pockets. Confined in this way, the ions cannot arrange themselves as readily into the continuous, ordered frozen phase seen in the bulk liquid.

In the study’s interpretation, disrupting that bulk-like ordering also disrupts the phase transition associated with the sharp fall in conductivity. The ionic liquid can therefore retain more liquid-like ion transport as temperature drops. This is a mechanism proposed for this particular host–guest material; it should not be treated as a universal effect of every porous framework on every ionic liquid.
What materials were combined?
- ZIF-8: a zinc 2-methylimidazolate metal–organic framework that provides the cage-and-window host structure.
- EMI-TFSA: 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide, the ionic liquid placed within the framework.
The notation EMI-TFSA@ZIF-8 refers to this host–guest composite. The approach changed the liquid’s physical environment rather than chemically modifying the ionic liquid itself. Fujie described the challenge as: “It is a challenge to prevent ionic liquids from freezing without chemically modifying the ionic liquid itself,” as reported by Chemistry World.

Does this mean better cold-weather batteries are ready?
No. The result suggests a possible route to electrolytes for low-temperature power supplies, including batteries or capacitors, but it does not establish commercial readiness or demonstrate a working battery. The published comparison concerns conductivity and phase behavior for one particular material combination, not battery capacity, lifetime, safety, or performance in a complete device.
