Scientists made colloidal particles form a microscopic arrangement resembling Istanbul’s Blue Mosque by using a patterned magnetic field as a guide. The “virtual mould” was not a solid mosque-shaped object: it was a magnetic-field pattern that directed particles to selected positions.
How does a virtual mould arrange colloids?
In a 2013 study, Demirörs, Pillai, Kowalczyk and Grzybowski used magnetic-field microgradients in a paramagnetic fluid to assemble magnetic and non-magnetic colloidal particles. A colloid is a material made of tiny particles dispersed through another substance; here, the particles were steered through a liquid rather than pressed into a physical form.

The reported apparatus used a photolithographically patterned nickel grid embedded in PDMS and placed on a permanent magnet. Nickel regions produced stronger magnetic fields than the spaces beside them. Paramagnetic particles were drawn toward the stronger-field regions, while non-magnetic particles moved toward adjacent weaker-field regions. In this way, the field pattern set out where different particles would gather. Chemistry World explains the patterned nickel-and-PDMS setup; the authors reported the broader assembly method in Nature.
What did the Blue Mosque example look like?
The researchers arranged colloidal features to evoke the mosque’s architectural outline, including large domes joined by arches and four satellite domes that were not connected to the main structure. It was a microscopic facsimile of selected shapes, not a scale model of the building. Chemistry World’s account describes the dome-and-arch arrangement.

The image makes the method easy to picture: instead of carving a tiny mosque-shaped cavity, the team patterned the forces acting on particles. The resulting arrangement could therefore reflect a designed field map, rather than the contours of a mould touching the particles.
What else did the 2013 study demonstrate?
The Nature paper reported single- and multicomponent arrays, three-dimensional structures and colloidal molecules. Demonstrated materials included polymer particles, silica particles and live bacteria. The bacteria result was a laboratory demonstration of particle positioning, not evidence of a clinical or medical technology.

- Particle types: the approach could position both magnetic and non-magnetic colloids.
- Geometry: the authors showed planar and three-dimensional arrangements, as well as clusters and colloidal molecules.
- Scale and performance: the authors reported assemblies involving approximately 108 particles, micrometre precision and typical yields of 80–90%. These are figures from their 2013 study, not independent replication results or current commercial-performance claims.
- Permanence: the authors also reported that assembled structures could be made permanent.
What are the method’s limits?
The authors stated that the method was then restricted to manipulating micrometre-sized objects. That qualification matters: the study demonstrated a laboratory assembly technique at a particular scale, not a general way to arrange objects of any size.
