A polymer matrix could release a chosen smell by opening a tiny fragrance-filled cell when paired heaters warm it. A 2011 report described this as a proof of concept—not a finished smell-display system for phones or televisions.
How does the polymer matrix release a smell?
The 2011 account describes a square array of small cells made from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a silicone polymer. Each cell held a different fragrance. Heating elements ran horizontally and vertically beneath the array; activating the two elements corresponding to a cell heated it, causing the polymer to expand and odor to escape through a puncture hole. In this design, selecting a smell meant activating the cell at the intersection of a row and a column.

The account attributes the goal of generating odors on command to Sungho Jin of the University of California, San Diego. It also quotes Takamichi Nakamoto of the Tokyo Institute of Technology noting that heating PDMS to release and stop an odor was not itself a new principle. The reported contribution was the matrix concept for selecting among fragrance-filled cells.

What was actually demonstrated?
The report characterized the work as a proof of concept. It gave an illustrative design example of a 10,000-cell square holding 10,000 odors and using 200 controllers. Those are reported scale figures, not verified measurements of a consumer product or proof that such a matrix was built and operated at that scale.

The same account said the cells showed no signs of leakage over a couple of days. That limited observation does not establish long-term storage life, consistent release over repeated use, safe exposure levels, or how quickly lingering odors could be cleared.
Is smell-o-vision available for phones or TVs?
No consumer integration is established by the report. It mentions phones and televisions as possible future applications, rather than describing a working device attached to either. The available account does not provide cell dimensions, release times, odor concentrations, repeatability results, or a safety assessment, so it cannot answer how well a practical display would perform.

The original research paper was not identified in the available reporting. The account is a 2011 Royal Society of Chemistry news story reproduced by a secondary blog, so its figures and descriptions should be understood as reported claims rather than a complete technical record.

A useful evaluation would need independently measured results for how many odors can be selected, how quickly a scent releases and clears, how well cells prevent leakage during storage, and whether release is repeatable and controlled for safe exposure. The 2011 account does not supply those measurements. Without them, the matrix is an intriguing control idea, not evidence of a ready-to-use scent display.
