Yes—but the evidence is limited to two unusual zinc complexes modeled in a 2021 density-functional-theory study. The calculations indicate that zinc’s filled 3d electrons participate strongly in bonding with highly electron-accepting trianions; they do not show that this is routine in ordinary zinc chemistry.
What the study modeled
In “Realization of the Zn3+ oxidation state,” Hong Fang, Huta Banjade, Deepika, and Puru Jena used density-functional theory to examine zinc interacting with two trianions: BeB11(CN)123− and BeB23(CN)223−. Zinc is commonly associated with the +2 oxidation state; the authors explored a special modeled route to Zn(III) using these highly stable, super-electrophilic partners.

The authors assessed bonding, charge density, electron localization, molecular orbitals, and energy decomposition. They interpreted these analyses as evidence that zinc 3d electrons are strongly involved in bonding in the two modeled complexes. These are values reported by Fang and colleagues for their calculated systems. The binding energies compare the two modeled complexes; the energy differences refer to the respective trianions relative to their neutral states. None of these figures is a general property of zinc.

What the result does—and does not—establish
The study’s significance is that a filled 3d shell need not be treated as completely uninvolved in bonding under every possible chemical environment. In the authors’ calculations, unusual electron-accepting partners create conditions in which zinc 3d electrons contribute strongly to the modeled bonds.
The result should not be extended to say that filled 3d electrons routinely drive ordinary zinc chemistry, or that common zinc compounds have been experimentally shown to behave this way. The reported evidence concerns the two specified theoretical complexes.

A further modeled change
The paper’s abstract says: “The replacement of CN with BO is found to increase the zinc binding energy even further.” This is the authors’ conclusion about their modeled chemistry, not a general rule for zinc compounds.
