Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWindows 11 asks for administrator authorization when an action needs elevated permissions. If you’re using a standard account, that usually means entering the credentials of an administrator account; if you’re an administrator, the expected prompt is usually to approve or deny the action. A PIN request does not necessarily mean your Windows Hello PIN is broken.
Why does UAC ask for a PIN or password?
User Account Control (UAC) is a Windows security checkpoint for actions that could change system settings or otherwise require administrator-level access. Windows asks you to authorize the action; the prompt you see depends on your account type and the device’s security policy. See Microsoft’s UAC settings overview.

Microsoft Learn describes the standard-user default this way: “The default, built-in UAC elevation component for standard users is the credential prompt.” That means a standard user generally needs valid credentials for an administrator account to continue. An administrator using Admin Approval Mode normally sees a consent prompt instead, but policy can require credentials for administrators too. Details are in Microsoft’s documentation on how UAC works.

| Situation | Why the prompt appears | Safe next step |
|---|---|---|
| Signed in with a standard account | The action needs administrator-level permissions, so Windows requests an administrator’s credentials. | Ask an authorized administrator to enter their credentials or perform the task. |
| Signed in with an administrator account | UAC normally asks for consent, but local or organization policy can require credentials. | Follow the prompt if you recognize and intended the action. If the behavior is unexpected, check with the device administrator. |
| Work- or school-managed device | Organization policy may control UAC behavior. | Contact your IT administrator rather than trying to change or bypass the policy. |
To check the account type, open Settings > Accounts and review the account information. Microsoft’s guide to managing Windows user accounts explains account types and their permissions. Administrators have broad control over a device, so Microsoft recommends limiting their number and using a standard account for everyday activity.

Is the Windows Hello PIN the same as your password?
No. Your Windows Hello PIN is a sign-in option associated with the device; it is distinct from your Microsoft account password. A PIN problem and a UAC authorization request are different issues. Resetting a PIN may help you sign in, but it does not grant administrator rights or provide an administrator’s credentials.
If you need to manage the PIN, go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. Microsoft explains Windows Hello in its Configure Windows Hello guide and provides steps to change or reset a Windows PIN.

Should you turn off UAC to stop the prompts?
Not as a routine fix. UAC settings control security behavior, and reducing notifications or disabling prompts can make it easier for unwanted changes to occur. Microsoft documents both the notification slider and more detailed policy options in its UAC settings guide and UAC settings and configuration documentation. Do not select “Elevate without prompting” as a general workaround; Microsoft describes it for highly constrained environments. Keep the secure-desktop elevation setting enabled.

If this is a personal PC, use an authorized administrator account for tasks that require elevation. If you do not know its credentials, ask the device’s administrator to help. On a managed computer, UAC changes belong to the organization’s IT team.
