Shure’s product information supports these use cases and specifications; it does not establish an independently tested overall sound-quality winner.
Which Shure microphone fits your setup?
| Microphone | Connection and format | Best fit | Key setup consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| MV7+ | USB-C and XLR; mounted close-talk microphone | Podcasting, streaming, and close-talk recording when USB-C convenience or app controls matter | Its app features apply to its digital operation; the XLR output is passive. |
| SM7B | XLR; mounted studio microphone | Speech or music recording in studio, location, television, talk-show, or news-desk settings | Shure advises planning for at least 60 dB of clean preamp gain. |
| SM58 | Three-pin XLR; handheld vocal microphone | Live vocals, sound reinforcement, or studio vocal recording when handheld use is wanted | Requires an XLR cable and suitable XLR input. |
The comparison is about workflow and intended use, not a controlled listening test. Room acoustics, microphone placement, voice, and personal preference affect the result, and the cited manufacturer materials do not settle those factors.

Choose the MV7+ for USB-C recording and digital controls
The MV7+ is a cardioid dynamic microphone with USB-C and passive XLR outputs, a 3.5 mm headphone output, and a 5/8-inch–27 mount. Shure lists a 50 Hz–16 kHz frequency response and USB-C operation up to 24-bit/48 kHz; its listed iOS mode is 16-bit/44.1 kHz. See Shure’s MV7+ product information and MV7+ user guide.
It suits a creator who wants a direct computer connection without giving up the option of an XLR recording chain. Shure describes it for close-talk applications, including podcasting and streaming. In MOTIV software, available controls include Auto Level, real-time denoising, Digital Popper Stopper, tone control, reverb, compression, limiting, and a high-pass filter. These processing features are not a guarantee that room noise will disappear. They also do not affect the passive XLR signal.

Choose the SM7B for an XLR studio or broadcast-style chain
The SM7B is a cardioid dynamic microphone with an XLR connection, not a USB microphone. Shure lists it for studio instrumental and vocal recording, location recording, scoring, television, talk shows, and news desks. Its published frequency response is 50 Hz–20 kHz, and its sensitivity is −59 dBV/Pa. Details are in Shure’s SM7B product information.

Before buying, check that your recording chain has an XLR input, cable, and suitable preamp gain. Shure’s comparison guidance says SM7B users should expect to need at least 60 dB of clean preamp gain. That is Shure’s guidance for this model, not a measurement of every interface or a requirement to generalize to other microphones. See Shure’s SM7B and SM7dB comparison guidance.
Shure supplies a standard windscreen and an A7WS close-talk windscreen, and its guide lists a thread adapter. Because the XLR connector sits close to the mount, check cable clearance with the stand or boom arm you plan to use.

Choose the SM58 for handheld vocals and live sound
The SM58 is a handheld cardioid dynamic vocal microphone with a three-pin XLR connector. Shure positions it for sound reinforcement and studio vocal recording. Its published frequency response is 50 Hz–15 kHz, and its built-in spherical filter is intended to reduce wind and breath pops. Read Shure’s SM58 product information.
Pick it when you need to hold a microphone for singing or speech, or use a handheld microphone in live sound. It is a different physical format and workflow from the mounted close-talk MV7+ and SM7B.

Match the microphone to your recording chain
If you want to connect directly to a computer
The MV7+ offers USB-C recording and headphone monitoring. If you instead use its XLR output, the signal is passive, so USB app settings do not carry over to that connection.

The SM7B and SM58 require an XLR cable and an audio interface, mixer, or other suitable XLR input. Check the preamp’s gain capability for the SM7B in particular, using Shure’s 60 dB guidance as a planning point rather than assuming every interface performs identically.
If you need handheld use
The SM58 is the handheld choice among these three. The MV7+ and SM7B are suited to fixed, close-talk placement on a stand or boom arm.
Check mount and cable fit before adding a stand
A stand or boom arm is useful when you want a fixed close-talk position, but it is not essential for every buyer. Shure says the SM7B, SM7dB, MV7, MV7+, and MV7i use 5/8-inch–27 microphone-stand threads and include an adapter for 3/8-inch–16 mounts. Confirm the stand’s thread and leave space for the cable connection, especially with the SM7B. See Shure’s microphone-stand compatibility guidance.
Quick Recap
Quick decision checklist
- Choose the MV7+ if USB-C recording, close-talk placement, and optional app-based processing are priorities.
- Choose the SM7B if you already have an XLR chain suited to Shure’s gain guidance and want a mounted microphone for speech or music.
- Choose the SM58 if you want a handheld XLR microphone for vocals, speech, or live sound.
- For any mounted setup, verify thread compatibility and cable clearance before choosing a stand or boom arm.
