Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse SharePoint column formatting to make an email address clickable without showing mailto: in the list. The link’s visible text can stay as the address, while its target uses mailto: to open the reader’s configured mail app. This changes only how the column is displayed—not the value stored in the list item.
Format a text column to show a clickable email address
For a single-line text column that contains an email address, format the field as an anchor. Set the anchor text to the current field value and its href to mailto: followed by that value. This keeps the displayed address clean while making it an email link.

Use this JSON for a column named Email:
{
"$schema": "https://developer.microsoft.com/json-schemas/sp/v2/column-formatting.schema.json",
"elmType": "a",
"attributes": {
"href": "='mailto:' + @currentField"
},
"txtContent": "@currentField"
}
The @currentField token supplies the current row’s value, so the same formatting works for each email in the column. The Microsoft column-formatting documentation describes formatting as a way to control how a field appears in a list view; it does not alter the stored list data. Microsoft’s Q&A example addresses this text-column email-link pattern.

- In the list, open the email column’s drop-down menu.
- Choose Column Settings > Format this column.
- Enter the JSON in the formatting pane.
- Select Preview to check the displayed address and link behavior, then select Save.
Microsoft says the saved display customization is shown to people who view the list. The underlying email value remains unchanged.

Use a Person column’s email property
A Person column is not a plain text value: it contains person properties. Use @currentField.email for the mail link target. You can keep the person’s name as the visible label and add a mail icon or other quick action, as in Microsoft’s Person-column formatting example.
For example, the anchor’s target can be set to ='mailto:' + @currentField.email, while its displayed text uses the person’s name property. The exact presentation—name alone or name plus an icon—depends on the formatting you choose.

Choose link behavior in a List Web Part
When the formatted list appears in a List Web Part, Microsoft’s anchor example opens the link in a new tab by default. To navigate in the same tab, add the data-interception attribute and set it to on:
"attributes": {
"href": "='mailto:' + @currentField",
"data-interception": "on"
}
This setting controls SharePoint’s link navigation behavior. The link still uses the viewer’s configured handler for email links.

Choose the schema for your SharePoint version
The JSON above references Microsoft’s v2 column-formatting schema. Microsoft’s current examples cover SharePoint Online and SharePoint Server Subscription Edition from the Version 22H2 feature update onward. For SharePoint 2019 and earlier Subscription Edition versions, Microsoft says to use the v1 schema URL specified in its documentation. Check the schema guidance for your edition and version before applying the example.
Column formatting supports links built from field values and documents http://, https://, mailto:, and tel: as output protocols. It is a display customization, not a way to rewrite email data stored in list items.
