Zenless Zone Zero is the best starting point for most new players who want stylish, hands-on combat and the widest documented device support. Choose Summoners War: Sky Arena instead if turn-based planning, rune optimization and competitive PvP are the main attraction. Choose Blue Archive if an anime school story, character-focused progression and a lighter-touch tactical battle loop matter most.
This is a fit-based recommendation, not a claim that any game is objectively more generous. All three use summoning or gacha systems, and there is no reliable, current apples-to-apples dataset here for pity value, free-currency income, retention or the spending required to remain competitive.

What each game actually is
Zenless Zone Zero: an action RPG built around direct control
Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ) is HoYoverse’s urban-fantasy action RPG. You control a small team in real time rather than selecting every action from a turn queue. The central feel comes from moving around threats, recognizing attack windows, dodging, parrying and switching Agents at the right moment. Encounters are generally compact, so the game rewards attention and execution rather than asking you to set up a long sequence of automated battles.

Its collection system is organized around Signal Search, the primary method for obtaining Agents, W-Engines and Bangboos. Polychromes and tapes can come from missions, events and other in-game sources, so a new player has to learn both the combat loop and how those resources are converted into searches. That layered structure is manageable, but it is more information-dense than a single character-and-equipment screen.

Summoners War: Sky Arena: a classic turn-based collector
Com2uS describes Summoners War: Sky Arena as a CLASSIC TURN-BASED RPG.
You summon monsters, assemble teams and decide how their abilities and statistics work together. The decisive skill is not reflexes; it is planning a turn order, choosing targets, managing cooldowns and building teams that answer different enemy compositions.
Monsters can be powered up and awakened. Runes provide the deeper layer of customization, adding statistics and set effects. The system can be tuned toward benefits such as extra attack speed, critical damage, immunity, additional turns or counterattacks. Two players may own similar monsters yet use them differently because their rune quality and set choices produce different speed, durability and damage profiles.

World Arena gives the game a clear competitive destination. That PvP focus makes the long-term loop compelling for players who enjoy testing a carefully optimized roster, but it also explains why the game feels more demanding after the initial tutorial: farming, comparing drops and rebuilding teams are ongoing activities rather than a one-time upgrade step.
Blue Archive: an anime story RPG with tactical squads
Nexon presents Blue Archive as an anime RPG in which you guide students through school experiences and military operations. Its publisher description says, Lead Elite Anime Girls into Battle in this Tactical RPG Experience!
The story and character relationships are central, while battles ask you to assemble a squad, account for roles and synergies, and trigger skills at useful moments.

Nexon also says, Summon students through the gacha system and build a squad for your playstyle.
That accurately describes the new-player choice: collecting students is only the first step; you must understand how those students function together. Battles can feel more automated than ZZZ’s encounters, but automation does not remove the need to select a sensible squad, develop students and plan around the available banners.
For Windows, the cited publisher page lists a 64-bit Windows 10 minimum, 4 GB of RAM, a GTX 650 Ti graphics card and 19 GB of storage. Treat those figures as the page’s stated minimum for the PC version, not a guarantee of identical performance on every system.
How the combat differs for a first-time player
Choose ZZZ for execution and immediate feedback
ZZZ is the clearest choice if “good combat” means personally making the difference in a fight. You read an incoming attack, dodge or parry, switch to the teammate who can capitalize on the opening and spend a skill at the right time. Errors are visible immediately: mistimed movement costs health, while a well-timed response can turn an encounter around.
This design also creates the most demanding first hour. A new player has to watch the arena, learn enemy telegraphs and remember which Agent should enter next. Someone who prefers relaxed sessions or mostly hands-off battles may find that attention requirement tiring, even though individual encounters are short.
Choose Summoners War for planning before the battle starts
Summoners War moves the important decisions into team construction and turn sequencing. Before a fight, you decide which monsters cover damage, control, support and survival needs. During the fight, you choose abilities and targets while watching turn order and cooldowns. Better runes can change whether a monster acts first, survives a hit or gains an extra turn, so upgrading is part of the strategy rather than a separate cosmetic layer.
The result is less about reflexes and more about diagnosis. When a stage fails, you can ask whether the team lacks speed, damage, control or durability, then alter monsters or rune sets. That analytical loop is rewarding for methodical players and intimidating for anyone seeking a simple campaign with one obvious upgrade path.

Choose Blue Archive for squad decisions with lighter control demands
Blue Archive emphasizes composition and tactical skill use while allowing more of the encounter to run automatically. You still need to identify roles, match students to the situation and recognize useful synergies, but you are not expected to perform a continuous chain of dodges and switches.
This makes it the gentlest combat introduction of the three for many story-first players. The trade-off is that the game can feel less physically interactive: if you want every second of a battle to depend on your inputs, ZZZ is a better match.
Learning curve and progression systems
ZZZ has the easiest action entry but several parallel layers
A new ZZZ account has to learn Agents, W-Engines, Bangboos, upgrade materials and Signal Search resources. Each layer answers a different question: who is on the field, what equipment improves them, which companion supports the team and how new units are obtained. The systems are understandable when learned one at a time, but the number of names and currencies can make the opening menus feel busy.
The payoff is flexibility. You can improve a favorite Agent, refine a team around its combat role and choose whether future Signal Searches should target a character, a W-Engine or another collection category. For a beginner, the practical rule is to understand the team you already use before spreading upgrade materials across every item on the account.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Summoners War’s progression is broad rather than linear. You collect monsters, power them up, awaken them and then tune them with runes. Runes are not merely a final bonus: their set effects and statistics can determine how a monster behaves in a team. Building one useful monster is therefore a combination of obtaining it, developing it and finding the right rune configuration.

Repeated farming is part of that design. The game offers many reasons to improve a roster, including different teams and World Arena competition. A beginner who enjoys incremental optimization can spend months refining choices. A beginner who wants to finish a story campaign and feel “done” quickly may experience the same depth as grind.
Blue Archive keeps the story path approachable, then adds roster decisions
Blue Archive’s main learning task is understanding students and squad synergy. You collect students, develop them and decide which combinations fit a particular battle. The narrative framing makes that progression easier to follow than a systems-first interface, especially if your priority is meeting characters and advancing school stories.
Its apparent simplicity should not be mistaken for a single-button game. Student roles, growth priorities and gacha scheduling still matter. The challenge is strategic preparation rather than constant manual movement, so players who like planning a roster without managing a large rune economy may find it more comfortable than Summoners War.

Story, tone and presentation
ZZZ: stylish urban fantasy
ZZZ presents a highly produced urban-fantasy world and delivers its identity through action presentation, character animations and short, energetic missions. Select it when atmosphere and moment-to-moment spectacle matter as much as collecting units. Its story is experienced alongside active combat, so the presentation feels kinetic rather than purely menu-driven.
Summoners War: systems-first fantasy
Summoners War is primarily a fantasy monster-collection and strategy game. Its appeal is the roster, the combinations those monsters enable and the satisfaction of improving them for tougher content or PvP. If narrative scenes are your main reason for starting a game, the other two provide a clearer story-led pitch.
Best Value
Blue Archive: school-life anime mixed with military conflict
Blue Archive combines school-life anime drama with military operations. Character stories and relationships are not a side decoration; they are a major reason to collect students. Choose it when you want a cast-driven experience in which squad building supports the narrative rather than replacing it.
Platforms and hardware decisions
ZZZ has the broadest documented spread in this comparison: PC, Android, iOS and PlayStation 5, with a Version 3.1 announcement that references Xbox update support. That breadth is useful if you want to move between phone, computer and console, although exact availability can depend on the current regional storefront.
Summoners War is documented on mobile and PC, making it suitable for players who want a persistent account across those device categories. The supplied material does not establish a console version.
Blue Archive’s cited publisher information specifically documents Windows PC requirements: 64-bit Windows 10, 4 GB RAM, GTX 650 Ti graphics and 19 GB storage. Those requirements are the minimums stated for that PC listing. The supplied information does not establish equivalent console support.
Gacha, summoning and the spending question
Every game in this comparison uses a summoning or gacha model. In ZZZ, Signal Search is used for Agents, W-Engines and Bangboos; in Summoners War, summoning is how monsters enter the roster; in Blue Archive, students are summoned through the gacha system. You should therefore decide first whether you enjoy collecting characters or monsters and planning around available banners.
The available evidence does not support a fair numerical ranking of pity systems, free-currency income, retention or the money needed to keep up. Those values can vary by date, banner, region and game mode. Do not treat the recommendation as proof that one title is cheaper or more generous.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA sensible beginner approach is to play the opening content, learn what the game asks you to optimize and set a personal spending limit before buying anything. In a competitive environment such as World Arena, your goals and tolerance for repeated farming matter more than a generic claim that one game is “free-to-play friendly.”
Which game should you start with?
Pick Zenless Zone Zero if these statements sound right
- You want direct control, dodge and parry timing, and frequent character switching.
- You prefer short, active encounters to long automated runs.
- You want the strongest documented mix of PC, mobile and console access.
- You are willing to learn several equipment and currency categories.
Pick Summoners War if these statements sound right
- You enjoy turn order, target selection and building multiple specialized teams.
- You find repeated farming satisfying rather than tedious.
- You want runes and statistics to remain meaningful long after the tutorial.
- Competitive PvP, including World Arena, is an important long-term goal.
Pick Blue Archive if these statements sound right
- You want an anime school story with a large cast of collectible students.
- You prefer squad synergy and tactical skills to continuous manual movement.
- You want a more approachable narrative entry before tackling deeper optimization.
- You are comfortable learning student roles and planning around banners.
A practical first-week plan
For a new ZZZ account
- Complete the opening missions until the basic Agent-switching, dodge and parry actions are comfortable.
- Use the early progression to identify one coherent team instead of upgrading every available character at once.
- Learn what each Signal Search category provides before spending Polychromes or tapes.
- Upgrade the Agents and equipment you actually use, then add Bangboo and other layers as their role becomes clear.
For a new Summoners War account
- Learn turn order and basic skill roles before trying to build a team for every mode.
- Power up and awaken a small core of useful monsters rather than distributing resources across the entire collection.
- Test rune sets for the statistic or effect your team lacks, such as speed, critical damage, immunity, additional turns or counterattacks.
- Treat farming as the normal progression loop and postpone serious World Arena goals until your teams and runes are stable.
For a new Blue Archive account
- Follow the story while noting what each student contributes to a squad.
- Build teams around complementary roles and synergies instead of choosing only by rarity or appearance.
- Develop a manageable group of students before expanding into many partial builds.
- Read banner details and decide which students fit your preferred playstyle before using summon resources.
Final recommendation
Start with Zenless Zone Zero if you are undecided: it offers the clearest hands-on action identity and the broadest documented platform reach. Move to Summoners War: Sky Arena when your priority is deep, turn-based optimization and a mature PvP destination. Choose Blue Archive when story, anime presentation and squad-based character collecting outweigh the need for constant manual combat.
None of these choices avoids gacha. The right first game is the one whose central loop you would still enjoy after the novelty of the opening summons fades.
