There is no standard refund deadline for completed Zelle payments. If a payment is pending because the recipient has not enrolled, you may be able to cancel it; if they never enroll, the payment expires and the funds return within 14 days. A completed payment to an enrolled recipient generally cannot be reversed through Zelle. For fraud, scam, or other account-related claims, contact the bank or credit union whose app you used—the institution handles the case and its timing.
First, check whether the payment is pending or completed
Open Zelle activity in the bank or credit union app you used and check the payment status. The distinction matters: a pending payment to someone who has not enrolled may still be cancellable, while a completed payment has reached the recipient’s bank account according to Zelle’s guidance.

If the payment is pending
Look for a cancel option in the payment details. Zelle says you may be able to cancel a payment when the recipient has not enrolled. If no cancellation option appears, or the status is unclear, contact your financial institution.

Zelle’s guidance says a completed payment to an enrolled recipient cannot be cancelled or reversed through its normal payment flow. Its FAQ states, “No, Zelle® payments cannot be reversed.” A general refund or investigation timeframe for completed payments is not published; ask your bank or credit union about your specific situation.

When a Zelle payment expires and returns
If the recipient never enrolls their Zelle profile, the payment expires after 14 days and the funds are returned to your account, according to Zelle. This 14-day period applies to that specific unenrolled-recipient situation; it is not a general refund timeline for completed payments.
What to do if you sent money after a scam or see an unauthorized payment
Report the issue promptly to the bank or credit union that holds the account. Zelle distinguishes a payment you knowingly made after being deceived from a transaction you did not authorize because someone gained access to your account.

- Unauthorized payment: Zelle says unauthorized payments typically qualify for reimbursement. That is not a guarantee or a stated processing time, so report it to your institution and ask how it will handle the claim.
- Impostor scam: Some impostor-scam cases may qualify for reimbursement, but Zelle does not promise reimbursement for every report. Explain what happened to your institution and ask about your case.
If the problem is a purchase
A payment dispute over goods or services that never arrived or were not as described is not automatically an unauthorized transaction. Zelle says it does not offer purchase protection for these disputes. You can ask your bank or credit union whether any options apply under its terms, but a refund is not assured.
