First confirm that the Pencil and iPad are compatible, check the battery, and try Apple’s model-specific charging and pairing steps. Apple does not provide a definitive at-home battery-health test in its troubleshooting guidance; if the Pencil still will not pair after those checks, Apple says service may be needed.
Can you tell at home whether an Apple Pencil is dead?
Not with certainty from a single symptom. A blank battery reading, failure to charge, or inability to pair can also result from an incompatible iPad, an incorrect charging connection, or a pairing issue. Apple’s guidance uses battery and pairing checks to narrow the problem, but it does not identify a failed battery based on any one of them.

Start by identifying the exact Pencil and iPad models, then use Apple’s compatibility list. Compatibility is model-specific, so do not assume that a Pencil works with an iPad just because both use the same connector or support similar features.

Look for the Pencil’s charge level in the Batteries widget or, where available, in Settings > Apple Pencil. Apple documents these battery-level locations for Apple Pencil (2nd generation) and Apple Pencil (USB-C). If no level appears, that alone does not establish that the Pencil is dead: it may not be connected or paired correctly.

Apple’s instructions for pairing and battery level are in its iPad guide to pairing, charging, and checking Apple Pencil battery level. For other Pencil models, follow the connection method specific to that model and iPad rather than relying on the table above.
Follow Apple’s pairing checks before diagnosing a failure
- Update the iPad and check compatibility. Confirm the iPad supports your specific Pencil model using Apple’s compatibility table.
- Connect the Pencil the right way for its model. For Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (2nd generation), center the Pencil on the iPad’s magnetic connector. For Apple Pencil (1st generation) with iPad (6th through 9th generations), remove the cap and connect it to the iPad’s Lightning connector. For Apple Pencil (1st generation) with iPad (10th generation), use the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter and a compatible cable.
- Keep it connected and restart the iPad. Apple recommends restarting the iPad while the Pencil remains connected.
- Check Bluetooth and reconnect. Make sure Bluetooth is on. If the Pencil appears under Settings > Bluetooth > My Devices, tap its information button, choose Forget This Device, then connect it again and tap Pair when prompted.
- Wait if the Pair button does not appear. Leave the Pencil connected for one minute while it charges, then connect it again. For Apple Pencil Pro or Apple Pencil (2nd generation), remove the iPad case if pairing still fails.

When to contact Apple for service
If the Pair button still does not appear after you have confirmed compatibility, used the correct connection, charged the Pencil, and completed Apple’s pairing steps, Apple says the Pencil may need service. That is a reason to seek diagnosis, not proof that its battery is the failed component. Apple’s guidance does not offer a battery-failure threshold or a home test that confirms the cause.

Consider a replacement only after checking compatibility and trying the steps above. Apple’s compatibility table also lists models for Apple Pencil (USB-C) and Apple Pencil Pro, so check the current listing before choosing a different Pencil.

The USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter is relevant to one specific setup: pairing Apple Pencil (1st generation) with iPad (10th generation), using a compatible cable. It is not a general fix for a Pencil that will not charge or pair, and using it does not establish that the Pencil is defective. If Apple’s pairing sequence still fails, service is the supported next step.
