Unblock a sender in Outlook using the right steps for new Outlook, the web, classic Windows, or Mac. Learn what to check if messages still go to Junk or disappear.

To unblock someone in Outlook, open the blocked-sender list for the account and Outlook version you use, select the address or domain, and remove it. In new Outlook and Outlook on the web, go to Settings > Mail > Junk email. In classic Outlook for Windows, open Home > Block > Junk E-mail Options > Blocked Senders. The steps differ on Mac, and third-party accounts may need to be changed with their email provider.

Unblock a sender in new Outlook or Outlook on the web

  1. If Outlook has more than one account, select the account whose blocked list you want to change.

  4. If you also want messages from that sender to avoid Junk Email, add the address or domain under Safe senders and domains and save the setting.

Microsoft’s instructions for these versions are in Block or unblock senders in Outlook and Safe Senders in Outlook.com.

Unblock a sender in classic Outlook for Windows

  1. Open Home > Block > Junk E-mail Options.

  2. Select the Blocked Senders tab.

  3. Select the sender or domain and choose Remove.

  4. Close the dialog to apply the change.

Classic Outlook sends messages identified by its blocked-sender list to the Junk E-mail folder. See Microsoft’s Windows instructions.

Unblock a sender in Outlook for Mac

For current Outlook for Mac, open Outlook > Tools > Junk Email Preferences, select the address in Blocked Senders, and remove it. Microsoft documents a separate preferences path for legacy Outlook for Mac in its Mac instructions.

Microsoft says blocking and unblocking in Outlook for Mac work only with Exchange accounts, such as Outlook.com accounts or work accounts hosted on Exchange. Exchange handles junk filtering on the server rather than through a local Junk Mail Preferences setting.

If unblocked mail still goes to Junk or disappears

Move a misclassified message out of Junk Email

In Outlook.com, open Junk Email, select the message, and mark it Not junk. Then check the blocked-sender list and remove the address if it remains there. Add the sender to Safe senders if you want to help keep its messages out of Junk Email. Microsoft’s guide covers mail that goes to the Junk folder by mistake.

Check Inbox rules if the message is in Deleted Items

If the mail is being moved to Deleted Items, check your Inbox Rules for a rule that matches the sender or words in the message. A rule can move mail independently of the blocked-sender list.

Verify the actual sender if blocked mail reaches your Inbox

If mail from someone you blocked still arrives, the sender may be using a different email address, or the displayed address may not show the address that actually sent it. Inspect the message’s internet headers to verify the real address before blocking it. Microsoft explains this case in Receiving email from blocked senders in Outlook.com.

Blocking, safe senders, and phishing reports are different

    • FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.
  • Safe senders: Add a trusted address or domain when its legitimate messages are being treated as junk. This is useful for mail classification, but it is not the same setting as removing an entry from the blocked list.

  • Phishing reports: Reporting a message as phishing does not, by itself, block future messages from that sender. Add the sender to the blocked list if you want to block subsequent mail. See Microsoft’s guidance on phishing and suspicious behavior in Outlook.

When Outlook’s menu does not control the account

New Outlook for Windows does not support blocking senders for third-party accounts such as Gmail, Yahoo, or iCloud. For those accounts, change blocking settings with the email provider. The right steps depend on which provider hosts the account; Outlook’s blocked-sender menu may not be available for it.

List limits and Junk Email retention

Microsoft states that Outlook’s blocked and safe sender lists have a limit of 10,000 entries. Its new Outlook and web instructions say Junk Email is automatically removed after 14 days. A separate Outlook.com article about mail mistakenly classified as junk gives a 10-to-30-day deletion range. These are statements from different Microsoft support pages, not one universal retention period; see the applicable Outlook instructions and mistaken-junk guidance.
