Zelda Games to Play After Ocarina of Time, Including the Closest Modern Alternatives

Start with Twilight Princess if you want the nearest full-length follow-up to Ocarina of Time: it keeps a guided 3D journey, a darker dramatic mood and a traditional dungeon rhythm. Choose Skyward Sword HD for especially dense dungeons and linear, item-driven progression. Choose Breath of the Wild when you want Zelda’s biggest change in scale and freedom, then play Tears of the Kingdom as its direct sequel.

For a shorter structured adventure, play Link’s Awakening. Outside Zelda, TUNIC is the closest small-scale match for exploration, secrets and classic puzzle-solving, while Immortals Fenyx Rising is the better fit for a large open world with climbing, mythological enemies and overt combat.

What makes a game feel like Ocarina of Time?

Choosing a follow-up depends on which part of Ocarina of Time you want to preserve. Its identity comes from several systems working together rather than from its setting alone:

  • World structure: a guided route through distinct regions, with major dungeons providing the backbone of the adventure.
  • Progression: new items and abilities open previously inaccessible paths, so exploration and story advancement are closely linked.
  • Puzzles: rooms, switches, environmental clues and item-specific solutions are integrated into each dungeon.
  • Combat: straightforward sword-and-shield fundamentals support exploration without overwhelming the puzzle structure.
  • Tone: a heroic journey can be bright, dramatic, darker or whimsical while retaining the same adventure framework.

The recommendations below are ordered by how much of that formula they retain, not by release date or scope. Nintendo’s official catalog lists Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword HD, Link’s Awakening, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom among the series’ games and current platform releases. Exact editions and availability can differ by region.

The best Zelda games to play next

Twilight Princess: the closest overall match

Twilight Princess is the safest recommendation when the request is simply “Which Zelda is most like Ocarina of Time?” It presents another guided 3D adventure with a darker, more dramatic tone and a familiar rhythm of overworld travel, dungeon entry, item discovery and newly opened routes.

Its progression follows the item-gated model that defines classic 3D Zelda. You are not expected to invent your own route through every problem; instead, the game teaches you how a new tool works, then asks you to apply it across a dungeon and the surrounding world. That structure makes it easy to understand why a newly acquired ability matters.

Choose this game when you want:

  • A clear sequence of regions rather than a self-directed itinerary.
  • Traditional dungeons with rooms that build toward a central item or mechanic.
  • A darker dramatic presentation than Ocarina of Time while keeping the heroic framework.
  • Sword-and-shield combat that remains subordinate to exploration and puzzles.

The trade-off is that it does not offer the same degree of route freedom as the open-world games. Its pleasures come from pacing, atmosphere and deliberate dungeon construction, so it is a better fit for players who enjoyed being guided through Ocarina of Time than for those who mainly want a huge sandbox.

Skyward Sword HD: the dungeon-first choice

Skyward Sword HD is the pick for readers who remember the dungeons more vividly than the open fields between them. Its structure is more linear than Breath of the Wild and more explicitly item-driven: progression is organized around discovering the right tool, learning its rules and using it to read increasingly complex spaces.

The defining strength is density. Dungeon rooms, environmental puzzles and transitions between spaces are tightly designed, so a short stretch of play can contain several distinct problems rather than long periods of free-form travel. That makes it rewarding if you enjoy examining a room, identifying its visual clue and testing the item you just received.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Pick Skyward Sword HD when you want:

  • A strongly guided route with little uncertainty about the next major objective.
  • Dungeons that occupy the center of the experience.
  • Item-driven progression in which each new ability changes how you read the environment.
  • A modern presentation of a classic, structured Zelda formula.

It is less suitable if your favorite part of Ocarina of Time was wandering away from the intended route. The linear structure is deliberate, not a limitation to work around.

Breath of the Wild: the biggest change from Ocarina

Breath of the Wild is the right next game when you want Zelda to feel new rather than familiar. It shifts the center of gravity from a sequence of guided regions to a flexible world built around exploration and player-directed problem-solving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Instead of waiting for a dungeon item to tell you which path is now available, you receive a broad toolkit and decide how to apply it. Traversal, environmental objects and physics systems can combine in ways the game does not always spell out. A puzzle may have several workable solutions, and the route to a destination is often a decision rather than an instruction.

That freedom changes the pacing:

  • Exploration comes first: curiosity, terrain and visible landmarks determine where you go next.
  • Progression is flexible: tools support many situations instead of serving one dungeon in one prescribed order.
  • Puzzles are systemic: physics and the environment can be as important as switches and locked doors.
  • Combat is broader: the familiar sword-and-shield foundation expands into a wider set of weapons and powers.

Choose it if you want to experiment, get lost productively and solve obstacles in your own order. Do not choose it expecting Ocarina of Time with higher-resolution graphics; its defining appeal is the change in scale, freedom and problem-solving style.

Tears of the Kingdom: play it after Breath of the Wild

Tears of the Kingdom is the direct modern sequel route. Nintendo describes it as a sequel that returns to Hyrule while adding floating sky islands and a broader toolset. Those additions make the game most coherent after you have already learned the world structure and flexible systems of Breath of the Wild.

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Playing it second lets you recognize what has changed instead of learning two related systems at once. The sequel’s expanded tools encourage construction, experimentation and new approaches to traversal and combat. That makes it a strong destination for players who enjoyed the freedom of Breath of the Wild and want more ways to manipulate the environment.

It is not the best first recommendation for someone specifically seeking the traditional Ocarina of Time rhythm. Start with Twilight Princess or Skyward Sword HD for that. Start with Breath of the Wild before Tears of the Kingdom if you want the modern open-world progression to unfold in order.

Link’s Awakening: a compact classic-style option

Link’s Awakening condenses the classic Zelda structure into a shorter, more focused adventure presented in a modern format. Its world is compact, its progression is structured and its appeal comes from moving through recognizable puzzle-and-dungeon beats without committing to a massive open world.

This is the best choice when you want the fundamentals of exploration, item collection and dungeon problem-solving but have less time or do not want a long 3D journey. It also works as a palate cleanser after a large open-world game: the objectives are legible, the spaces are manageable and the next meaningful upgrade is usually easy to identify.

Choose it for:

  • Classic puzzle-and-dungeon pacing in a concise package.
  • A structured route with less traversal overhead.
  • A modern presentation that preserves a compact adventure’s proportions.

Twilight Princess or Breath of the Wild?

This is the most useful head-to-head decision for an Ocarina of Time fan. Both are major 3D Zelda adventures, but they reward opposite habits.

Puzzles Designed rooms with a deliberate solution path Physics and environmental experimentation
Tone Darker and more dramatic A broad adventure shaped by exploration

In practical terms, select Twilight Princess if you want the game to tell you where the next chapter is and steadily increase puzzle complexity. Select Breath of the Wild if deciding what to do next is itself part of the fun.

Closest modern alternatives outside Zelda

TUNIC: the strongest small-scale alternative

TUNIC is the closest non-Zelda recommendation for players who want compact exploration, hidden paths, cryptic clues and a classic top-down or isometric feel. Its official description calls it “an isometric action game about a small fox on a big adventure,” set in a land of lost legends, ancient powers and dangerous monsters.

The game’s appeal is discovery rather than spectacle. You are encouraged to inspect the environment, notice a route that was easy to miss and interpret clues whose meaning may not be immediately obvious. That makes it a particularly good fit for someone who likes the feeling of understanding a dungeon or overworld through observation.

Choose TUNIC when you want:

  • A smaller world that rewards careful exploration.
  • Secrets and hidden paths instead of a fully signposted route.
  • Cryptic clues that ask you to infer meaning.
  • An isometric action perspective rather than a large 3D open world.

It does not reproduce Ocarina of Time’s exact 3D presentation or its large, formally separated dungeons. Its strength is capturing the curiosity, mystery and compact problem-solving that make classic Zelda memorable.

Immortals Fenyx Rising: the open-world puzzle-and-combat alternative

Immortals Fenyx Rising is the better alternative for players who want a broad open world with climbing and traversal, puzzle challenges, mythological enemies and more overt combat. Ubisoft’s official description follows Fenyx, a winged demigod on a quest to save the Greek gods, across a stylized world filled with ancient puzzles and creatures such as Cyclops and Medusa.

Its emphasis is more action-forward than TUNIC and more openly mythological than any direct Zelda substitute. The combination of traversal, combat and puzzle areas makes it suitable for someone who liked exploring Hyrule but wants a different setting and a stronger focus on fighting large enemies.

Pick it when you want:

  • A large, stylized world designed for climbing and movement.
  • Puzzle challenges integrated into open-world travel.
  • Mythological enemies and a more overt combat focus.
  • A modern alternative that favors spectacle alongside exploration.

Choose Breath of the Wild instead if Zelda’s systemic experimentation is the main attraction; choose Immortals Fenyx Rising if the same broad pillars sound appealing but you prefer a more explicit combat-and-mythology identity.

Choose by the experience you want

  1. You want “another Ocarina of Time.” Start with Twilight Princess.
  2. You want the best dungeons. Start with Skyward Sword HD.
  3. You want the biggest modern reinvention. Start with Breath of the Wild.
  4. You want the modern sequel after that reinvention. Play Tears of the Kingdom after Breath of the Wild.
  5. You want a shorter, classic-format adventure. Choose Link’s Awakening.
  6. You want a non-Zelda game with secrets and compact exploration. Choose TUNIC.
  7. You want an open world with climbing, mythology and heavier combat. Choose Immortals Fenyx Rising.

Recommended play orders

The traditional 3D route

  1. Twilight Princess
  2. Skyward Sword HD
  3. Breath of the Wild
  4. Tears of the Kingdom

This order moves from the most familiar guided structure toward the most flexible modern systems, then follows the direct sequel path.

The modern open-world route

  1. Breath of the Wild
  2. Tears of the Kingdom
  3. Twilight Princess or Skyward Sword HD for a return to traditional dungeon pacing

Use this order if you are primarily interested in Nintendo’s modern interpretation of Hyrule and want the sequel’s expanded toolset to build on the first game.

The compact route

  1. Link’s Awakening
  2. TUNIC
  3. Twilight Princess

This sequence starts with a concise classic-style adventure, shifts to a smaller independent interpretation of exploration and secrets, then returns to a full-length guided 3D Zelda.

Platform and edition checks before buying

Nintendo’s catalog includes the Zelda games listed above among current platform releases, but the exact version available to you depends on region, hardware generation, edition and stock. A remaster, remake and original release are not interchangeable when save compatibility, visual presentation or control options matter.

  • Confirm the platform printed on the product page or box before checkout.
  • Check whether you are buying the original game, a remake or a remastered edition.
  • Verify the seller and region, especially for physical copies.
  • For digital purchases, confirm that the edition is supported on your hardware and account region.
  • For Tears of the Kingdom, make sure you have access to Breath of the Wild first if you want the story and world progression in sequence.

Inventory and regional listings change, so treat the platform information shown at the time of purchase as the final check rather than assuming every edition is stocked everywhere.

Bottom line

Twilight Princess is the best all-purpose answer for an Ocarina of Time fan because it preserves guided 3D exploration, item-based progression and traditional dungeons while adopting a darker tone. Skyward Sword HD is the specialist choice for dense dungeon design. Breath of the Wild is the essential choice when you want Zelda’s biggest shift in freedom, and Tears of the Kingdom is the sequel that follows it. For shorter or non-Zelda options, choose Link’s Awakening, TUNIC or Immortals Fenyx Rising according to the scale and combat style you prefer.
