Administrators running Zimbra Collaboration Suite (ZCS) should check immediately for CVE-2026-73570. The command-injection flaw can let an unauthenticated attacker reach operating-system command execution through SMTP input when the optional zimbra-snmp package is installed and SNMP notifications are enabled. Zimbra lists version 10.1.20 as the fix release, while Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency (CSA) reports active exploitation.
What CVE-2026-73570 affects
This is a conditional vulnerability, not a defect in every ZCS installation. The affected combination is:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- ZCS earlier than 10.1.20;
- the optional
zimbra-snmppackage installed; and - SNMP notifications enabled.
Zimbra identifies the issue in its SNMP monitoring component. The CSA rates it 8.9 out of 10 under CVSS v3.1 (High). That score is attributed to the CSA and the CNA record shown by NVD; NVD’s own assessment was not listed in the surfaced record.

Why the attack is called unauthenticated remote code execution
The entry point is SMTP, not an authenticated SNMP login. Microsoft’s investigation describes specially crafted SMTP input reaching notification processing without a user logging in or interacting with a message. When a service-state change triggers health monitoring, the swatchdog component can incorporate an attacker-controlled value into an snmptrap shell invocation. Improper sanitization then permits command injection.
Commands execute with the privileges of the zimbra service account. That account is not equivalent to root, but command execution on an internet-facing mail server can still expose mail data, credentials, configuration, and connected systems. Microsoft’s technical sequence is an account of its investigation rather than an independent reproduction for this article.

How to determine whether a ZCS server is exposed
- Record the installed ZCS version. Confirm the exact server version from your normal Zimbra administration or package-management procedures. Versions before 10.1.20 require further checks.
- Check for
zimbra-snmp. The package is optional, so do not assume that a standard installation contains it. Verify installed packages on each mailbox, proxy, and supporting server where ZCS components run. - Verify SNMP notification settings. Determine whether SNMP notifications are enabled. A pre-10.1.20 server without the package or without notifications enabled does not match the affected configuration described by Zimbra and CSA.
- Map exposure and patch timing. Prioritize internet-facing systems, systems that accepted SMTP from untrusted networks, and hosts that remained on an affected configuration after exploitation was reported.
Keep the version, package state, notification state, exposure, and dates in the incident record. These facts determine whether a host needs emergency investigation in addition to routine upgrading.

How to patch Zimbra CVE-2026-73570
Install the vendor fix
Zimbra lists 10.1.20 as the release containing the remediation. Use Zimbra’s supported upgrade procedure and confirm the currently supported release and upgrade path before scheduling maintenance; the vendor warns that unsupported older versions can share vulnerabilities.
Do not treat disabling a notification or removing a package as a substitute for upgrading. Those changes may reduce exposure for a particular configuration, but they do not remediate other flaws in an obsolete ZCS release. After upgrading, recheck the reported version on every relevant node and confirm that services return normally.
If an immediate upgrade is impossible
Use change-controlled temporary risk reduction: restrict unnecessary SMTP exposure, limit administrative access, and review whether SNMP notifications can be safely disabled until the supported upgrade is complete. Record the exception, owner, and deadline. These measures are containment, not a fix.

CSA reported that the vulnerability was being actively exploited. Microsoft investigated activity involving web shells, reverse shells, persistence, privilege escalation, and data collection. Those are observed or reported behaviors across investigations, not a guaranteed sequence on every compromised host.

Prioritize evidence collection
- Unexpected processes spawned by Zimbra services, especially shell interpreters or network utilities;
- new or modified files in web-accessible directories and unexplained server-side scripts;
- new scheduled tasks, services, startup entries, SSH keys, or other persistence mechanisms;
- outbound connections from the mail server that do not match its normal role;
- unexpected account, privilege, configuration, or mailbox-access changes; and
- archives, staging files, or transfers suggesting data collection.
Preserve relevant logs and volatile evidence according to your organization’s incident-response plan. Microsoft provides behavior-based hunting guidance for Defender XDR customers, but each command, file operation, or connection should be interpreted only for what the evidence establishes. Its composite attack-chain diagram combines behavior from multiple confirmed compromises; no single host necessarily exhibited every stage.
Timeline and urgency
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 20 July 2026 | Microsoft dates the ZCS 10.1.20 release containing the remediation. |
| 13 August 2026 | Microsoft dates public disclosure of CVE-2026-73570. |
| 21 August 2026 | Singapore CSA publishes its alert, assigns the 8.9 CVSS v3.1 rating, reports active exploitation, and urges immediate updates. |
| 30 September 2026 | Microsoft publishes its threat-intelligence account and hunting guidance. |
The CSA’s recommendation is direct: “Users and administrators of affected products are advised to update to the latest version immediately.”
Bottom line for Zimbra operators
Check version, zimbra-snmp installation, and SNMP notification status now. Upgrade affected systems to a currently supported release that includes the 10.1.20 fix or a later vendor release. Because exploitation has been reported, treat an exposed, unpatched server as both a patching priority and a potential incident: preserve evidence and activate qualified incident-response procedures when suspicious activity is found.
