Soldered Electronics Aims to Deliver a Quick-Start Platform for OpenBMC Projects With OmniMC

OmniMC is pitched as a sensor-board starting point for OpenBMC chassis-management development with Intel Agilex 3 or Agilex 5 kits, but exact compatibility and setup details remain unverified.

The OmniMC Sensor Board is presented as a hardware-oriented shortcut for developers who want to explore OpenBMC-based chassis management: Soldered Electronics says it can turn an Intel Agilex 3 or Agilex 5 development kit into an OpenBMC development kit. That is the stated goal, not a verified setup-time result or proof that the combination is ready for a particular chassis.

What OmniMC is intended to do

OmniMC is described as a physical sensor board for OpenBMC development. Its purpose is to help developers begin designing a custom chassis manager by pairing the sensor board with an Agilex 3 or Agilex 5 development kit. The product description frames this as a quick-start approach, but does not establish a measured setup time or a complete, tested end-to-end configuration.

That distinction matters: a development kit and sensor board can provide a starting point, but a working chassis-management system also depends on the target hardware, firmware configuration, connected sensors and other system components. The available product description does not specify the exact board model, sensor inventory, wiring, or configuration procedure.

What OpenBMC does

OpenBMC is an open-source firmware stack for baseboard management controllers (BMCs), used to manage systems such as servers, top-of-rack switches and RAID appliances. The project describes its software as a Linux distribution for management controllers. Its stack uses Yocto and OpenEmbedded for building, with systemd and D-Bus among its core technologies.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A BMC is a separate management computer that monitors and controls aspects of a host system. OpenBMC is therefore not a general-purpose desktop operating system; it is software built for a particular management-controller target and its associated hardware.

How an OpenBMC build is selected

The project’s documented workflow is target-specific. In broad terms, a developer installs the host prerequisites, clones the OpenBMC source, selects a supported machine target, and builds the obmc-phosphor-image image with BitBake. The repository’s setup pattern is:

Compatibility and maturity are separate questions

OpenBMC’s documentation cautions that support varies by target and may be limited. A supported motherboard does not automatically mean the complete system is supported: fan behavior, for example, depends on the motherboard, the fans connected to it and the chassis. Porting OpenBMC to an unlisted platform can require substantial work; the project notes that manufacturer schematics and documentation are useful for that effort.

For OmniMC, the broad Agilex 3 and Agilex 5 pairing is stated in the product listing, but exact compatible development-kit SKUs and the boundary of the supported configuration are not established in the available information. “Works with Agilex 3 or 5” should not be read as confirmation that every kit in those families is compatible.

What to confirm before choosing a kit

Before treating OmniMC as a ready-to-build platform, check current Soldered Electronics documentation for the details that determine whether it fits your project:

What is and is not established about availability

The product description identifies OmniMC’s intended role and the Agilex families it is designed to pair with. It does not establish current price, stock, shipping status, included accessories or availability through a particular retailer. Nor does it provide enough detail to compare the board’s integration effort or system maturity against building a platform from scratch. Treat those as open questions to verify with Soldered Electronics before making a purchase decision.
