Zcash NU7: How to Check Wallet and Node Compatibility Before Mainnet

By Freedom251 Team · · 14 min read

As of 7 October 2026, you cannot yet confirm NU7 compatibility from an activation date because Zcash has not published a mainnet activation height. The official NU7 status page and draft ZIP 259 leave the activation height and minimum network protocol version to be determined. Node operators should prepare to run Zebra: the NU7 guidance says the expected consensus changes will not be supported by zcashd. Wallet owners must verify support for their exact wallet release with its provider; no authoritative, provider-by-provider compatibility list has been published in the official material.

Use the preflight below to separate node consensus support from wallet transaction support, record what is still provisional, and repeat the checks when the deployment parameters are finalized. A successful connection before activation does not prove that a node or wallet will remain usable after activation.

What “NU7 compatible” actually means

Compatibility has two independent parts. A full node must implement the consensus rules that become active at the NU7 height, advertise the required peer protocol version, and continue validating the post-upgrade chain. A wallet does not normally validate the chain itself; it must create, sign, broadcast and track transactions in a way accepted by NU7 nodes and the pools they use.

Node consensus compatibility

For a node, ask four questions:

  • Does the installed implementation include the NU7 consensus changes?
  • Will it switch rules at the final mainnet activation height?
  • Will it advertise the final minimum network protocol version?
  • Can it synchronize and validate blocks after activation without rejecting the NU7 chain?

The official NU7 guidance directs operators toward Zebra and says zcashd is expected not to support the upgrade’s major consensus changes. ZIP 259 is still a draft, so it does not provide a final Zebra release number or final peer-version value to copy into an operations runbook.

Wallet transaction compatibility

A wallet is ready only when its specific application version documents NU7 support and handles the transaction rules that apply after activation. Check whether it can construct and sign supported transaction versions, use the correct consensus branch behavior, broadcast through an NU7-capable node, and recover funds if an upgrade or migration is required. “The wallet connects today” is not a sufficient test.

NU7’s status before mainnet

The official status page currently has no activation height. Draft ZIP 259 also marks the mainnet activation height and minimum network protocol version as not yet determined. Treat every calendar date, peer-version value or “ready by” instruction that is not published in a final deployment notice as unconfirmed. The ZIP index lists NU7 candidate material, but a listed proposal is not proof that its text or deployment schedule is final.

Item Current position Operational meaning
Mainnet activation height Not set on the official NU7 page; not yet determined in draft ZIP 259 Do not schedule a production cutover from an unofficial height.
Minimum network protocol version Not yet determined in draft ZIP 259 Do not hard-code a peer-version requirement yet.
Recommended node direction Prepare for Zebra; zcashd is expected not to support the major NU7 consensus changes Plan a migration rather than waiting for a zcashd patch.
Wallet compatibility list No confirmed provider-by-provider list in the cited official sources Obtain a statement for the exact wallet application and release.
Protocol scope Proposed in draft ZIP 259 and related candidate ZIPs Use the technical rules for planning, not as evidence of final activation.

Node-operator preflight

Perform these checks on every machine that validates, relays or supplies RPC services. Keep the results with the machine’s inventory so you can repeat them when activation parameters settle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Confirm the network and information date

  1. Confirm that the node is configured for Zcash mainnet, not testnet or a private network.
  2. Open the official NU7 status page and note its current activation status and publication date.
  3. Open ZIP 259 and record whether its draft labels and not-yet-determined fields have changed.
  4. Write down the check date, installed implementation, exact release string and data directory. A later operator should be able to identify what was actually tested.

Do not infer readiness from a blog post, a peer count or a node that happens to be downloading blocks. Those observations can be useful diagnostics, but none establishes post-activation consensus support.

2. Identify the implementation that is validating consensus

Inventory the process that owns the chain database and validates blocks. A host can contain several binaries, containers or services; checking an unused executable tells you nothing about the production validator. Record whether the service is zcashd, Zebra or another implementation, the exact release, build architecture, network, data path and the account that runs it.

If the service is zcashd, treat that as a migration requirement. The official zcashd deprecation guidance says zcashd reached end of life and does not support NU6.3. The NU7 page likewise points operators to Zebra for the expected NU7 consensus changes. Do not wait for a final NU7 height before testing a Zebra migration: storage layout, synchronization time, RPC clients and monitoring may need changes.

3. Plan and test a Zebra migration

Use the current Zebra documentation and the release notes for the version you intend to deploy. The sources cited here do not establish a settled NU7-specific Zebra release number, so select a release only after its own notes state the required network-upgrade support.

  1. Make a recoverable backup of wallet data, configuration, service definitions and monitoring settings. Keep private keys offline and test that the backup can be read.
  2. Provision enough disk, memory, network bandwidth and maintenance access for a full validator. Size the host from the selected Zebra release documentation rather than from an old zcashd installation.
  3. Install Zebra in a staging environment first. Import the same network settings and connect it to peers without replacing the production service.
  4. Allow a complete synchronization and compare the validated tip, peer behavior and RPC responses with an independently observed mainnet tip.
  5. Exercise every application that uses the node’s RPC interface: address monitoring, transaction submission, shielded operations, alerts and accounting exports. A consensus-ready node can still break an integration if an RPC method, response or authentication setting differs.
  6. Document a rollback plan that does not reintroduce an unsupported validator after activation. Keep the old data for forensic reference, but do not assume the old daemon can validate the NU7 chain.

4. Verify the final release and activation configuration

When the activation height is published, check the release notes and configuration reference for the exact Zebra version that supports it. Confirm that the configured network is mainnet, the activation height is present where the software expects it, and the minimum peer protocol version matches the final deployment specification. If a release package embeds the value, compare the package’s documented value with the official ZIP rather than editing a guessed setting.

Because ZIP 259 leaves both values open, a configuration containing a copied “not yet determined,” an unofficial height or an old protocol value is not a valid production configuration. Recheck after every draft or release update.

5. Validate synchronization and post-upgrade behavior

Before activation, monitor block height, chainwork or equivalent validation indicators, peer count, rejected blocks and repeated disconnects. These checks establish operational health, not NU7 readiness. After a testnet or controlled activation event documented by the project, verify that the node continues to accept valid post-upgrade blocks and rejects blocks that violate the new rules. Preserve logs around the transition for incident response.

Run a dry run with the services that depend on the node: wallet RPC, payment processing, explorers, indexers and alerting. Check that a transaction submitted before the transition is either confirmed under the documented rules or clearly reported as pending or invalid; do not silently mark it paid based only on a pre-activation response.

6. Check peer-version behavior

ZIP 259 describes a transition in which pre-upgrade and NU7 nodes can connect before activation. After activation, NU7 nodes disconnect peers advertising a lower protocol version, and pre-NU7 blocks may be rejected. Therefore, a healthy peer list on the day before activation cannot prove compatibility. Your monitoring should alert on peers that are repeatedly dropped, a sudden fall in compatible peers, or a node that follows a chain different from independently observed NU7 validators.

7. Protect keys and operational access

Consensus software changes do not replace wallet-backup discipline. Keep encrypted backups of seed phrases or key material, document who can stop and start the service, and verify that operators can restore access without relying on the old daemon. If your wallet keys are held by a separate application, test recovery there rather than assuming a node migration moves keys automatically.

Wallet-user preflight

Wallet support cannot be inferred from the device, operating system or ability to display a balance. It is a statement about a particular wallet application and release.

1. Identify the exact wallet build

  1. Open the wallet’s About, Settings or Support screen and record the application name, version, build number, operating system and network.
  2. Check the provider’s official release notes, status page and support channel for “NU7” or the final network-upgrade name.
  3. Save the URL and publication date of the statement. “Supports Zcash” without a version or upgrade reference is not a compatibility declaration.

The official NU7 material does not name a confirmed wallet list. Do not treat an exchange notice, a community comment or another user’s screenshot as a substitute for the provider’s own support statement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Ask what the release supports

A useful provider statement should answer whether the release can construct, sign, broadcast and monitor transactions after NU7 activation; which transaction versions it creates; which consensus branch behavior it uses; and whether an upgrade, rescan, migration or new server endpoint is required. Ask how the provider will handle transactions that remain pending across the activation boundary.

If support is unclear, stop before sending a large payment. Export or back up the wallet according to the provider’s documented procedure, and use a small test amount only when the provider explicitly says the test is safe and recoverable.

3. Check transaction-version handling

ZIP 259 says NU7 introduces no new transaction format, but version 4 transactions become invalid after activation. Version 5 and version 6 transactions remain structurally unchanged. This does not mean that every transaction already created can cross the upgrade boundary: validity also depends on its consensus branch, expiry, inputs, fees, pools and the point at which it is mined.

Ask the wallet provider which version it creates by default and what happens to an unsigned, signed or broadcast transaction during the transition. Keep the transaction ID and status from the wallet, but verify final confirmation through an NU7-compatible node or the provider’s documented explorer. Do not rebroadcast an old transaction blindly if the wallet reports it as invalid or expired.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Confirm consensus branch behavior

ZIP 259 retains the importance of the consensus branch ID used in signatures. A wallet that displays an address and can sign an older transaction is not necessarily using the branch required by NU7. The provider should state that its signing library and transaction builder select the correct branch for the active network upgrade. If it cannot answer, regard support as unverified.

5. Test backup and migration before urgency

  1. Make an encrypted backup using the wallet’s documented method.
  2. Verify that the backup contains the recovery material needed to restore funds, not merely an application preference file.
  3. Restore into a separate test profile or spare installation, following the provider’s instructions.
  4. Confirm that addresses, viewing keys, shielded metadata and transaction history required by the application are available after recovery.
  5. Record whether a rescan is required and how long it takes. Do not uninstall the old wallet until the recovery test succeeds.

6. Separate wallet and node responsibilities

A wallet may use a remote server, a bundled light client or your own full node. If it uses your node, verify both sides: the wallet release must support NU7 transactions, and the endpoint must be a Zebra-based validator configured for the final activation. If it uses a provider’s server, the provider must publish its own upgrade plan; your local node’s status does not make that service compatible.

Transaction and pool details to record

The draft specification’s transaction guidance is narrow but important. Record these facts in your transition checklist:

Rule in draft ZIP 259 What to check What not to assume
NU7 does not add a new transaction format Wallet libraries still need NU7-aware validation and signing logic. “No new format” does not mean no wallet update is needed.
Version 4 transactions are invalid after activation Identify any v4 transaction that could remain unconfirmed at the transition. A v4 transaction created before activation is not guaranteed to confirm afterward.
Version 5 and 6 remain structurally unchanged Confirm the wallet selects the correct consensus branch and rules. Unchanged structure is not a blanket guarantee of acceptance.
Pool and global shielded-action limits are proposed Check final limits and wallet behavior once the deployment text settles. Draft limits are not final mainnet parameters.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Why a pre-activation connection can mislead you

During the pre-activation period, nodes implementing NU7 and nodes that do not yet implement it may still connect. They can exchange information while the old rules remain active. Once the activation height is reached, the protocol-version and block-validation rules change: NU7 nodes disconnect peers advertising a lower protocol version, and blocks produced under pre-NU7 rules may be rejected. This is why a node that is synchronized on the eve of activation can stop following the canonical chain immediately afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply the same distinction to wallets. A wallet can show a balance and submit a transaction through a compatible server before activation while still lacking the signing or transaction-status logic needed afterward. The decisive evidence is a provider statement for the exact release plus a successful post-activation transaction test, not today’s connectivity.

What the draft says about NU7’s proposed scope

Draft ZIP 259 describes a 25-second block target spacing, per-pool and global shielded-action limits, and deployment of ZIP 237. The ZIP index lists planned NU7 candidate ZIPs including ZIP 218, ZIP 235, ZIP 237, ZIP 2003 and ZIP 2008, with a possible update to ZIP 317. These are proposed components. They should guide questions for software vendors, but they must not be presented as final mainnet behavior until the specifications and deployment notice settle.

For an operator, the practical consequence is to watch for changes in validation, pool limits, RPC reporting and wallet fee or action selection. For a wallet user, ask whether the application enforces the final limits before signing and explains a rejection clearly. Do not tune capacity or transaction policies around the draft’s 25-second figure as though it were an activation parameter.

Why NU6.3 and zcashd status matter to this check

The latest settled mainnet upgrade listed in the official ZIP index is NU6.3 at block height 3428143. ZIP 258 records that activation height and expects Zebra to be the only full-validator implementation from NU6.3 activation onward. Separately, the zcashd deprecation page states that zcashd reached end of life and does not support NU6.3.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These facts do not mean NU7 has activated. They explain why implementation identity matters now: an operator who still treats zcashd as the long-term validator has already missed the supported-node direction established for the current upgrade cycle. Use NU6.3 as context for migration planning, then follow the final NU7 notice for the new cutover.

Decision matrix: when to proceed, wait or stop

Situation Decision Reason
Official NU7 page has no activation height and your node is zcashd Begin Zebra migration testing; do not claim NU7 readiness. The activation schedule is unsettled and zcashd is not the expected NU7 implementation.
Official activation height is published, but your Zebra release notes do not mention that deployment Wait and obtain a supported release. Running an unspecified build leaves consensus support unverified.
Your wallet provider names NU7 support for your exact version and documents transaction handling Complete backup, restore and small-amount tests. A support statement is necessary, but operational recovery still needs verification.
Your wallet only says “Zcash compatible” Treat support as unknown and contact the provider. Generic compatibility does not establish transaction-version or branch behavior.
A node connects before activation but drops peers afterward Stop treating it as a validator; inspect protocol version, release and chain tip. Pre-activation connectivity is explicitly not proof of post-upgrade compatibility.
An unconfirmed v4 transaction spans activation Follow the wallet provider’s documented recovery or replacement procedure. Draft ZIP 259 makes v4 invalid after activation.

Common failure modes and fixes

The node is synchronized but follows the wrong chain

Check the implementation and release first, then compare the tip and recent block hashes with an independently observed NU7-capable node. Review peer disconnects and protocol-version logs. Do not delete chain data immediately; preserve logs and backups for diagnosis. If the software is unsupported, switch to the documented Zebra release and resynchronize according to its migration instructions.

The wallet shows a balance but cannot send

Separate display from transaction construction. Confirm that the wallet release supports NU7, that its backend is upgraded, and that it is not attempting to create a v4 transaction after activation. If the provider has no NU7 statement, pause sending and request one rather than repeatedly retrying.

A transaction was accepted before activation but later disappears

Record the transaction ID, version, creation time, expiry and pool information if the wallet exposes them. Ask the provider whether the transaction is v4 and how it handles the activation boundary. Do not assume disappearance means funds are lost; verify spendable balance from a restored wallet or an NU7-compatible node before creating a replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RPC clients fail after migration

Compare authentication, endpoint names, response formats and enabled services between the old and Zebra deployments. Update integrations from the current Zebra documentation and test them in staging. Consensus support and API compatibility are separate acceptance criteria.

Peers disconnect in large numbers

After activation, lower-version peers are expected to be disconnected by NU7 nodes. Check whether your node is advertising the final protocol version and whether the installed release contains the final deployment. A sudden loss of peers combined with rejected blocks is a stop condition, not a reason to increase connection limits blindly.

Repeatable checklist for the final activation announcement

  • Read the current NU7 status page and confirm the published mainnet height.
  • Read the final deployment specification at ZIP 259 and record the minimum peer protocol version.
  • Confirm that every production validator is running the supported Zebra release and that no service still relies on zcashd for consensus.
  • Verify mainnet configuration, activation height, peer version, backups, monitoring and rollback procedures.
  • Obtain a provider statement for each wallet application and exact release used by staff or customers.
  • Check transaction-version and consensus-branch handling, especially for transactions that may remain unconfirmed at activation.
  • Run a small, documented transaction test after the upgrade and verify confirmation through an NU7-capable path.
  • Keep the check results, release strings, URLs and timestamps so an incident responder can distinguish a software problem from an unsettled parameter.

The final go/no-go decision should be based on settled activation parameters, a supported node implementation and an explicit wallet-provider statement. Until those three pieces exist, label the environment “not yet verified” rather than “NU7 ready.”
