You can start recording YouTube videos with a phone or camera you already own. Make a short test video, then add equipment only to fix something you can hear or see: a mount for a steadier frame, a microphone for unclear audio, or a light for poor illumination. A dedicated camera is an upgrade—not a starting requirement.
What equipment do I need to start making YouTube videos?
For a basic setup, use a recording device, a stable way to frame the shot, usable light, and clear sound. Your phone may already cover the first item; a stable surface can cover the second. Test before buying accessories.

- Phone or camera: Use what you have for the first recording. YouTube’s official guidance covers filming with a mobile device, and does not make a dedicated camera a prerequisite. YouTube Help: Tips to film with mobile
- Support: A phone mount, flexible tripod, or selfie stick can help with hands-free or repeatable framing. Check that the clamp fits your device and that the support suits your intended shot.
- Microphone: Start with the built-in mic if it captures your voice clearly. Consider an external mic when distance, movement, or room noise makes the result difficult to understand.
- Light: Begin with available light. Add a light only if the test looks too dim or uneven.
Set up and test before you shop
- Choose a quiet location. Check the background for personal information before recording. YouTube advises against showing details such as a home address, postal code, or phone number. YouTube Help: Filming tips
- Stabilize and frame the device. Position the phone or camera at the angle you want. If using a phone, keep its microphone openings clear; a hand, mount, or case should not block them. YouTube suggests mounting options such as a selfie stick or flexible tripod. YouTube Help: Tips to film with mobile
- Check the light. Face a usable light source and look for soft, even illumination. Move the device or subject to reduce harsh shadows before deciding you need a lamp.
- Record a short sample and listen back. Check whether the voice is intelligible, not just whether the picture looks good. YouTube Help says an onboard mic may work best when you stay three to four feet from the camera. If that distance does not suit your shot, adjust the setup or consider a compatible external mic. - Set the recording resolution and settings. Decide these before the real shoot, as YouTube’s filming checklist recommends. Check that your device has enough storage and battery for the recording.
- Buy only to solve a problem the test revealed. If the frame is shaky, address support; if the voice is distant, address mic placement or audio equipment; if the image is poorly lit, change the light or add a light source.

When is a dedicated camera worth considering?
Consider upgrading only after you can name what your current device cannot do for the video format you intend to make. You might need a particular recording mode, more reliable autofocus, a stabilization option, or a microphone connection. Also consider the camera’s size and handling, where you film, and how its files fit your editing workflow. A camera guide can help compare models, but its recommendations are buying-guide context, not a universal requirement.
