How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Radio Stream on Google Cloud Compute Engine

A practical guide to running a continuous YouTube radio stream from Google Cloud Compute Engine, from VM and encoder setup to recovery, costs, and rights.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can run a prerecorded radio-style YouTube stream from a Google Cloud Compute Engine virtual machine (VM): install a playout or encoding application, configure it with YouTube’s stream URL and key, and keep the VM running. The stream can continue without a home computer, but a single VM does not guarantee uninterrupted playback. Plan for monitoring, restarts, secure key storage, and ongoing cloud costs.

How the setup works

The VM runs software that plays your audio and, if you want, a visual such as cover art or a station graphic. That software encodes the program and sends it to YouTube Live. YouTube receives the feed and distributes it to viewers.

This guide covers a self-managed encoder on Compute Engine. It is distinct from Google Cloud’s managed Live Stream API, which has its own architecture and session limits. For a simple prerecorded radio feed, a VM and encoder are the direct approach; you do not need a camera or capture card.

What you need before you start

  • A Google Cloud project with billing enabled and permission to create Compute Engine resources.
  • A suitable VM, persistent disk, and a region selected for your operational needs. Estimate the cost before launching; VM, storage, and networking choices affect the bill.
  • Audio files you have the rights to broadcast, plus optional artwork or a video loop.
  • A playout or encoding application that can play your program continuously and send a live feed using YouTube’s ingest settings.
  • A YouTube channel eligible to create live streams. Check the current YouTube Studio interface and account status before relying on a first broadcast.
  • A plan to monitor the encoder and YouTube stream health, and to recover if either stops.

Set up the Compute Engine VM

  1. Estimate resources and cost. Use the Compute Engine product and pricing information to choose a machine type, disk, and region. Compute Engine charges can include the VM, storage, and networking. The limited free tier should not be assumed to cover a production stream running all day, every day; calculate the configuration and expected hours before deployment.
  2. Create a VM. In Google Cloud Console, open Compute Engine and create an instance with an operating system supported by your chosen playout or encoder software. A static radio visual may require less video-encoding work than a complex moving scene, but the selected resolution, codec, and software still determine CPU and network demands.
  3. Install and configure the playout software. Add your audio program and optional visual source. Configure it to continue playing or looping as intended. Software choices and their installation steps vary, so follow the chosen application’s own current documentation rather than applying settings from an unrelated encoder.
  4. Keep credentials out of public locations. Use a restricted-access configuration or secret store for the YouTube stream key. Do not put it in a public script, screenshot, or source repository. Anyone with the key may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  5. Arrange automatic restart and monitoring. Configure the encoder process or service to restart after a crash, and monitor both the process and YouTube’s stream-health status. A process restart is not the same as confirming that viewers are receiving a healthy stream.

Google documents outbound bandwidth limits that vary by machine family, traffic path, and instance configuration. Check the Compute Engine network bandwidth limits for the instance you choose; do not infer capacity from the encoder bitrate alone.

Connect the encoder to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select a live stream and review the current visibility and broadcast options. The interface lets creators configure features such as auto-start, auto-stop, and DVR, where available.
  2. Copy the ingest details. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream into the encoder’s corresponding fields. YouTube describes the key as similar to the stream’s password and address. Keep it private. If you believe it has been exposed, reset it in the live-stream settings and update the encoder.
  3. Choose the connection protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Select RTMPS when your encoder and connection support it. YouTube’s current encoder guidance also lists RTMP/RTMPS protocols and supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio; the options available depend on your encoder and stream setup.
  4. Set a sustainable output. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Select a bitrate using YouTube’s current live settings table for your codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than copying one number into every configuration. Choose a quality the VM and network can sustain continuously.
  5. Start with a test. Start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators. Test representative audio and motion, even if the final visual is mostly static. YouTube recommends testing before launch, checking upload capacity, and monitoring stream health during the broadcast.
  6. Go live and verify playback. Start the broadcast using the controls and auto-start behavior configured for your stream. Confirm the public playback destination and listen for clean audio. Do not assume that an encoder reporting “connected” means the viewer-facing stream is healthy.

See YouTube’s current stream settings guidance for stream URL, key, DVR, and auto-start/stop options, and its encoder setup and settings guidance for protocols, codecs, keyframes, testing, and monitoring.

Make a 24/7 stream recoverable

A continuously running target is an operational goal, not a guarantee supplied by a VM. A single instance is a simpler design, but its failure can interrupt the feed. Google’s Compute Engine SLA distinguishes single-instance deployments from instances distributed across multiple zones; coverage depends on the SLA terms and the actual design.

  • Watch both ends. Alert on encoder process failure and on YouTube stream-health issues. If possible, verify that the program is advancing rather than merely seeing an active process.
  • Automate process recovery. Use the operating system’s service manager or your chosen software’s supervisor features to restart a failed encoder. Confirm that the restart reconnects to YouTube successfully.
  • Document manual recovery. Keep a private runbook with the VM access method, encoder start/stop procedure, YouTube stream selection, and key-reset steps. Avoid storing the key in the runbook itself unless access is tightly restricted.
  • Test failure scenarios. Before relying on the stream, test an encoder restart and confirm the YouTube preview returns. Check what happens after a VM reboot, a network interruption, or an expired or reset key.
  • Consider resilience against VM failure. A multi-zone architecture may improve resilience characteristics, but adds design and cost complexity; it is not automatically configured by creating one instance. Choose an approach appropriate to the value of uninterrupted broadcasting.

Google Cloud’s managed Live Stream API is a separate option, not a way to make a self-managed VM immortal. Its documentation says a channel may be restarted after 24 hours in a streaming state other than stopped or stopping. See the Live Stream API quotas and limits before choosing it for a long-running workflow.

Understand the ongoing costs

Compute Engine pricing depends on the VM, storage, and networking configuration. The final cost depends on factors such as machine type, region, disk, and hours running, so use Google’s pricing information and calculator for the exact planned setup shortly before deployment.

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit (4GB RAM)
  • CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit

Google’s VPC pricing page lists transfer from Compute Engine to specified Google products, including YouTube, as no-charge in the stated category. That narrow listing does not mean every stream-related transfer, destination, IP configuration, or service is free. Separately, instance bandwidth limits and project quotas can affect delivery. Treat current cloud documentation as a basis for estimating, not as a permanent price quote.

Protect the music and other broadcast material

Being able to send a track to YouTube does not mean you have permission to broadcast it. You need rights appropriate to the works, territories, platform, and use. YouTube for Artists advises creators planning to use copyright-protected music to coordinate with their label or distributor to avoid issues such as copyright strikes. That guidance is not a license or a determination that any particular track is cleared. Review YouTube’s live-streaming guidance for artists and obtain the permissions your programming requires.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube does not show an incoming preview Incorrect stream URL or key, encoder not connected, or wrong protocol/settings Compare the encoder’s ingest fields with the current Live Control Room details, confirm the encoder is running, and inspect its connection log. Reset and replace the key if it may have been exposed.
Stream health reports connection problems Unstable network path, insufficient instance bandwidth, or output settings the VM cannot sustain Check encoder logs and stream health, verify the instance’s documented bandwidth limits, and reduce output demands using YouTube’s settings table as a guide.
Audio cuts out or the visual freezes Source playback or encoder failure, resource pressure, or a damaged/unsupported media file Check whether the source is still advancing, inspect CPU and memory use, test the same media in the playout software, and configure a supervised restart if the process has stopped.
The stream stops after a VM reboot or encoder crash The service is not configured to start or reconnect automatically Configure startup and restart behavior, then test a controlled reboot and verify that YouTube receives the feed again.
Unexpected cloud charges appear VM hours, disk, network use, or another project resource was omitted from the estimate Review billing by project and resource, confirm the VM and disk configuration, and recalculate with the actual region and runtime. Do not assume YouTube-bound transfer makes the whole deployment free.
A stream key no longer works The key was changed, reset, or copied incorrectly Copy the active key from the correct YouTube stream into the encoder’s secure configuration, then test the preview before resuming the broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If maintaining a VM, encoder, restarts, and monitoring is more work than you want, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping uploaded videos live as a 24/7 stream. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from its cloud service, so no computer or home connection has to stay on.
