A YouTube stream health warning that appears after an encoder restart does not, by itself, mean the restart caused a problem. In Live Control Room, read the exact message beside the Health Indicator and its timestamp, then fix the condition it identifies. YouTube says an error continues to appear while it remains unresolved. The warning’s wording—not its timing—is the best guide to recovery.
1. Read the warning before changing settings
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room for the event and find the message beside the Health Indicator. Note the exact wording and timestamp. YouTube Help explains that “If the error isn’t fixed, it will continue to pop up.” A warning still visible after restarting may therefore describe an unresolved stream condition rather than a failed restart. YouTube’s live-stream error messages guide distinguishes errors by the problem detected.

- Red error: critical; it may prevent an event from starting or cause problems for viewers.
- Yellow error: moderate; it may reduce stream quality.
Use the message to identify whether the issue is encoder startup, a stream setting, picture or sound quality, or the connection to YouTube. Do not reset the stream key or change multiple settings just because the warning followed a restart.
2. If the encoder will not start, check its connection method
If the error occurs while starting a third-party encoder that uses a stream key, copy the key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and paste it into the encoder. YouTube’s guidance is specific to this startup condition; an ordinary encoder restart is not, on its own, a reason to replace the key. Treat a stream key like a password: do not share it publicly.

If the encoder signs in to YouTube directly instead of using a stream key, YouTube directs users to the software provider for support. See YouTube’s error guidance for the startup case and its encoder troubleshooting guidance.
3. If the warning names a setting, correct that setting
YouTube lists separate errors for formats and codecs, bitrate, audio, video, resolution, and keyframe frequency. Apply the correction for the exact message. For the incorrect-format case described in YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance, use H.264 video and AAC audio. Other supported formats depend on the ingest protocol and the error; do not treat one codec or bitrate as universal.

Check keyframe interval and bitrate
YouTube Help recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its recommended H.264 bitrates vary by resolution and frame rate:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| H.264 video setting | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s current guidance values, not one-size-fits-all settings. Match the row to the actual stream resolution and frame rate, and follow the specific error if it gives a different applicable recommendation. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS video formats H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR bitrate encoding; and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP.

4. If the stream looks or sounds bad, inspect the encoder output
Compare the encoder’s own preview with the stream in Live Control Room. If picture or sound is already poor in the encoder, start with local checks rather than changing the stream key or assuming the internet connection is at fault.
- Update the encoder software to its latest version.
- Inspect the picture and sound directly in the encoder.
- Review encoder error messages and CPU load.
- Check whether the local recording or archive is being created and looks and sounds right.
YouTube says trying a different encoder may help if output remains poor and these checks do not explain it. A hardware encoder is an optional choice for higher-production-value events, not a required fix for a health warning. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide covers these checks.

5. If encoder output is healthy, test the outbound connection
If the encoder preview looks and sounds healthy but YouTube reports a problem, YouTube points to a possible outbound connection issue. Test the connection from the streaming location. If the test finds a problem, contact your internet service provider. The cited YouTube guidance does not make buying a router, cable, or other network hardware the default remedy.
6. Confirm recovery in Live Control Room
- Correct the specific condition identified by the warning.
- Check the encoder preview and verify that its output is stable.
- In Live Control Room, preview the event and check the Health Indicator for updated status and messages.
- For a test or planned event, verify that the event is accessible and that the local archive is growing.
- Once live, continue monitoring audio and video quality and review new stream-health messages.
YouTube’s encoder guidance says: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” For future events, YouTube recommends testing before going live and previewing in Live Control Room. See its live encoder settings guidance.
