It might, but YouTube does not document whether resetting a stream key immediately disconnects an encoder that is already live. Treat a reset as a possible interruption: schedule routine changes, update the encoder with the replacement key, and confirm the stream reconnects and plays. If a key is compromised, prioritize resetting it over preserving uninterrupted viewing.
What happens when you reset a YouTube stream key?
A stream key is the credential your encoder uses to send a feed to YouTube. YouTube’s instructions say to reset the key in Live Control Room, copy the newly generated key, and update the encoder. They do not say whether that reset terminates an ingest session that is already connected. YouTube therefore does not guarantee that a live broadcast will continue uninterrupted after rotation. YouTube’s stream settings instructions describe the reset and encoder update, while its encoder setup guidance explains how the encoder sends the feed.

An existing connection might continue until it reconnects, but that is an operational possibility—not a documented YouTube guarantee. Plan for the encoder to need the replacement key to establish a new connection.
How to rotate the key with the least risk
- Choose the right moment. For routine rotation, use a maintenance window and notify viewers if a brief interruption matters. If you suspect the key is compromised, reset it promptly; YouTube gives a compromised key as an example reason to generate a new one.
- Reset the key in Live Control Room. Open YouTube Studio, go to Live Control Room, select Stream, find Stream key, and click Reset. YouTube says channel owners and managers can reset keys; editors and viewers cannot. Follow YouTube’s current instructions if the interface differs.
- Replace the key in your encoder. Copy the new key and update the encoder’s stream-key field. Keep the stream URL and other encoder settings unchanged unless you have a separate reason to change them. Be prepared to restart or reconnect the encoder so it makes a fresh connection with the replacement key.
- Verify the result. Check that the encoder reports a successful connection, inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then check the public player from another device or network. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring stream quality; see its live-stream troubleshooting guidance and stream health recommendations.
Plan around your encoder setup
One encoder
With a single encoder, a reconnect may be visible to viewers. Confirm that someone can update or restart it remotely before beginning a routine rotation. If onsite access is required, arrange it in advance rather than assuming a reset will leave the current connection untouched.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.

- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Backup encoder
A backup encoder can help with continuity only if failover has been tested. YouTube recommends testing by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. That test checks your failover path; it does not prove that key rotation itself will be seamless. Follow YouTube’s redundancy guidance.
RTMPS
RTMPS is YouTube’s encrypted option for RTMP-based ingest. It protects the transport connection, but it does not change the uncertainty about whether resetting a key disconnects an existing session. See YouTube’s streaming guidance.

What a key reset does not tell you about a 24/7 archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish what happens to an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast’s archive, or whether a key reset closes an active session. Do not treat the under-12-hour statement as an answer to either question. See YouTube’s encoder workflow.

- The encoder will not connect: confirm that the replacement key—not the old one—is in the encoder’s stream-key field. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for an encoder that will not start directs operators to get a key in Live Control Room and paste it into the encoder: troubleshoot live streaming.
- The encoder says it is connected, but viewers cannot watch: check the Live Control Room preview and health indicators, then test the public player separately. A local encoder status alone does not confirm that the public playback path is working.
- The primary stopped and the backup did not take over: treat failover as unverified. Check the backup’s configuration and connection, then test it deliberately before relying on it for a future key change.
- You cannot find or reset the key: check that you are signed in with a channel-owner or manager role; YouTube says editors and viewers cannot reset keys.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a pre-recorded YouTube broadcast, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping from the cloud. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
