To restore a 24/7 lecture stream after a YouTube stream key reset, copy the newly generated key from YouTube Studio and replace the old key in the active encoder. A reset changes the credential; encoder failover is a separate protection for equipment or network problems and should not be assumed to update the key for you.
Replace the reset key in YouTube Studio and your encoder
YouTube requires a channel owner or manager to reset a stream key. After the reset, the encoder must be configured with the new key. Use this recovery sequence:

In YouTube Studio, select Go Live, then open the Stream tab in Live Control Room.

Find the stream key, select Reset, then copy the newly generated key. Keep it private; anyone with access to the key may be able to send a stream to the channel.

Open the encoder that is meant to send the lecture stream. Replace its saved key with the new one, and confirm that its YouTube stream URL is correct too. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover entering both the stream URL and key: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Start or reconnect the encoder. In Live Control Room, check the preview and stream health before relying on the stream. Confirm that both picture and audio are present.
YouTube’s instructions say to copy the newly generated key and update the encoder software. If your encoder uses a third-party account login rather than a stream key, YouTube directs you to the software provider for support.

Tell the difference between a key reset and an encoder failure
A reset key makes the old credential stale. Updating the encoder’s saved key addresses that problem. A backup encoder or network route addresses different risks, such as a failed computer, encoder, or connection. A backup should not be treated as a way to refresh a reset key automatically.
For a 24/7 stream, make key replacement operationally possible
Document who is authorized to reset the key and who can update the encoder. Keep a secure route for the channel owner or manager to provide the replacement credential to the operator, and record which encoder is active. This avoids a situation where a key is reset but nobody with the right access can update the running setup.

Test encoder failover before depending on it
YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirming that playback rolls over to the backup. Test with your actual setup and observe the viewer-facing stream; do not assume that having a backup device guarantees a seamless handoff. Keep enough upload bandwidth for the stream and any backup
YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload bandwidth beyond the total stream bitrate. If primary and backup encoders may send simultaneously during failover, budget for both encoders’ bitrates plus that headroom. Network disruptions can break a stream, so test the connection under the conditions you expect to operate in. See YouTube’s Streaming tips.
Plan lecture archives separately from stream continuity
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that a continuous 24/7 stream will produce one complete archive. If you need a full lecture recording, verify the archive workflow for your use case and maintain a separate local recording plan rather than relying on a single uninterrupted stream archive. Encoder reports an invalid or rejected key: Reopen Live Control Room, copy the current key, and paste it into the encoder configuration. Check for stray spaces or an incomplete paste.

The encoder connects but YouTube does not show the expected stream: Check that the encoder is using the intended YouTube stream URL as well as the replacement key.

The preview has no picture or sound: Check the encoder’s video and audio inputs, then confirm the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before treating the stream as restored.

A third-party tool uses sign-in instead of a stream key: Follow that provider’s support route; YouTube’s key-paste troubleshooting does not apply to login-based authentication.
