To end an encoder-based YouTube broadcast, stop sending content from your encoder. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s documented workflow also calls for clicking End Stream in Live Control Room. Leave the saved stream settings and key alone if you want to reuse them; ending the broadcast is separate from deleting an archived video.
End the broadcast, not its saved setup
A YouTube live workflow can involve three distinct things: the live broadcast, the saved stream configuration and stream key used to connect an encoder, and a video archive of the broadcast. Ending the live transmission does not require deleting the saved configuration. YouTube documents loading previous stream settings, including the stream key, and reusing custom keys. Its reuse feature creates a new stream populated with previous settings; it does not establish that an ended broadcast or its archive is reopened.

Steps to stop the stream while keeping its settings
- Check which workflow you are using. In Live Control Room, identify whether the broadcast is an ongoing encoder stream or a scheduled event. Check the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings as well: YouTube says they determine whether streaming can be started or stopped from the encoder. See Manage live stream settings.
- For an ongoing encoder stream, stop sending content from the encoder. Use the encoder’s own stop action. Do not delete the stream setup just to end the current transmission.
- For a scheduled stream, click End Stream in Live Control Room, then stop the encoder. This is the scheduled-stream procedure YouTube documents. The exact stop behavior can depend on the auto-start/auto-stop configuration, so check those settings rather than assuming every setup responds identically. The procedure is covered in YouTube’s encoder guide and its stream-settings guide.
- Keep the saved settings and key if you plan to stream again. YouTube can load prior settings, including the key. Its Reuse settings option copies those settings into a new stream; it is not a way to reopen the ended event.
- Make a local recording if you need to preserve the footage. Do not rely on a continuous 24/7 YouTube broadcast to produce a complete archive; see the archive limitation below.
What happens to the recording
Ending a broadcast, retaining its configuration and managing its archived video are separate actions. Archive visibility changes or deletion are handled in YouTube’s video-management interface, not by deleting the stream settings. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 broadcast exceeds that threshold, so keep a local recording when the footage matters. See YouTube Help: Archive live streams.

If the stream does not stop as expected
- It keeps transmitting after you stopped the encoder: check whether this is a scheduled event and use End Stream in Live Control Room, then stop the encoder, as YouTube’s scheduled-stream procedure directs.
- The encoder can start or stop the stream in an unexpected way: review the auto-start and auto-stop settings for that stream. Those settings govern whether streaming can be controlled from the encoder.
- You want the same setup for another broadcast: use the saved settings or Reuse settings to create a new stream with the prior configuration. Do not assume this reopens the same ended broadcast.
- You need a copy of a long broadcast: make a local recording. YouTube warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.
For general encoder guidance, YouTube also recommends checking the preview, stream accessibility, and audio and video quality. Its tip is to stop the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube. See YouTube live streaming tips — Computer.
