A YouTube stream dropping offline after a bitrate change does not, by itself, prove that bitrate caused the disconnect. First capture the exact stream-health message in YouTube Live Control Room and the relevant OBS status or log, then check bitrate against the codec, resolution, frame rate, and available upload bandwidth. Change one setting at a time and test before the next important broadcast.
Start with the evidence, not another bitrate change
Before changing more settings, note OBS’s active video codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, rate-control mode, and keyframe interval. Then open YouTube Live Control Room and read the exact stream-health warning or error. That message, alongside OBS’s encoder status or log, is more useful than the timing alone: a bitrate change may coincide with a disconnect without being its cause.

- Record the exact wording of the YouTube warning or error.
- Note whether OBS reports an encoder problem, a dropped connection, or another status.
- Keep track of the settings before and after the change so you can identify which variable matters.
YouTube advises monitoring stream health and reviewing its messages. Avoid changing several settings at once; doing so can make it harder to distinguish an encoder, configuration, or network problem.

A suitable bitrate depends on the ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube provides separate recommendations for H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, so a bitrate that fits one configuration should not be treated as a universal target.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
For example, YouTube’s current H.264 guidance lists 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations for those specific combinations—not proof that either bitrate caused your stream to drop. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the recommendation matching your codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR), which YouTube recommends.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends this and says not to exceed four seconds.
- After changing resolution or frame rate, check the corresponding bitrate guidance again rather than carrying over a number from a different setup.
- YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport to Google’s servers.
These recommendations help you check configuration; they cannot identify an individual disconnect without the health message, OBS status, and connection conditions.

Check encoder output and OBS health
Look at what OBS reports while streaming and whether the output appears and sounds healthy inside the encoder. YouTube recommends using the current encoder version. If the stream looks or sounds poor in the encoder, check encoder errors and CPU load, and inspect a local recording if available. A local archive can help distinguish an encoding or performance issue from a problem that occurs later in the stream path.
YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting guidance covers encoder checks and connection troubleshooting. Follow the error that is actually present rather than assuming every bitrate-related disconnect needs the same fix.

Check the stream key only if the error points to it
A stream key is a separate setup issue, not an automatic explanation for a disconnect after changing bitrate. If YouTube reports an encoder start error, its guidance is to obtain a key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. Do not reset or replace a working key without a matching symptom.
See YouTube’s instructions for setting up a live stream with an encoder. If you update a key, make sure OBS uses the same key shown for the intended YouTube stream.

Test the outbound connection and adjust resolution if needed
If OBS output looks healthy but YouTube or viewers still report trouble, test the strength and stability of the outbound internet connection. YouTube recommends contacting your internet service provider if a connection test identifies a problem.

If your available bandwidth cannot support the selected resolution, YouTube’s error guidance says to consider lowering the resolution. Once you change it, recheck the bitrate recommendation for the new resolution, codec, and frame rate instead of assuming the old target still applies. See YouTube’s live-stream error messages for relevant platform guidance.

Run a representative test before going live
Test with audio and motion similar to the planned broadcast, then monitor stream health during the test. A static scene may not expose the same encoding or connection issues as a moving, full-production stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Set the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval you plan to use.
- Run a test stream with representative audio and motion.
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room stream health and OBS status during the test.
- If it fails, save the exact message and change one relevant setting or investigate the indicated connection or encoder issue before testing again.
Common symptoms and what to check
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| YouTube reports an encoder start error | Check the stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the intended key. |
| Video or audio looks poor inside OBS | Check encoder errors and CPU load; inspect a local archive if available. |
| OBS output appears healthy, but YouTube or viewers report problems | Test outbound internet strength; if the test identifies a connection issue, YouTube recommends contacting your ISP. |
| YouTube indicates bandwidth is insufficient for the selected resolution | Consider a lower resolution, then check the bitrate recommendation for that configuration. |
| No specific error identifies the cause | Capture the health message and OBS status, verify the complete settings group, and test before making further changes. |
