A disconnect after a graphics-driver update does not, by itself, prove the driver caused it. First check OBS’s log and View → Stats to distinguish network-dropped frames from rendering lag or encoding overload. Then test the part of the streaming pipeline the evidence implicates before rolling back or reinstalling a driver.
Why OBS may disconnect after a graphics-driver update
OBS sends video from your computer to YouTube’s ingest server. A failure near the time of a driver update may be related, but timing alone is not a diagnosis: network instability, insufficient upload capacity, GPU pressure, encoder problems, or output settings can produce different symptoms. OBS separates connection troubleshooting from encoding-performance troubleshooting for this reason (OBS connection troubleshooting; OBS encoding performance guide).

Start with the OBS log and Stats indicators, not a driver reinstall. Save the log immediately after reproducing the problem, note the disconnect time and any error, and do not share a stream key or other secret if you publish the log.

In OBS, open View → Stats while streaming and watch which indicator rises around the failure. Network-dropped frames, rendering lag, and encoding overload are not interchangeable symptoms. The OBS status-indicator definitions below are also described in an OBS community guide last updated in 2020; use the current OBS interface and your log as the operational reference.

| OBS signal | What it suggests | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Network-dropped frames or unstable bitrate | The connection from your computer to the ingest server may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. | Test upload capacity, bitrate, route, wired versus Wi-Fi, and network software. |
| Rendering lag | OBS may not be getting frames from the GPU quickly enough to render the scene. | Reduce competing GPU work, cap game frame rate, or simplify scenes. |
| Encoding overload or an encoder error | The encoding workload or encoder path may be failing; an error alone does not establish a driver fault. | Preserve the exact log error and test a simpler workload and output configuration. |
| YouTube reports insufficient or missing incoming video | Delivery or output compatibility needs investigation; the warning alone does not identify the cause. | Compare its exact wording with OBS Stats, the log, and YouTube’s current encoder guidance. |
OBS says dropped frames occur when frames cannot be delivered to the remote server because the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate; enough dropped frames can lead to disconnection (OBS connection troubleshooting). Rendering lag instead points to OBS struggling to obtain or render frames from the GPU (OBS status indicators; OBS encoding performance guide).
Step-by-step checks for an OBS YouTube disconnect
- Reproduce and record the failure. Stream until the issue occurs, save the OBS log immediately afterward, and note the time and exact error. Keep stream keys and credentials private.
- Check OBS Stats. Use View → Stats and identify whether network-dropped frames, rendering lag, or encoding overload rises near the disconnect. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether a test helped.
- If network-dropped frames rise, test the connection. Confirm that your selected bitrate is supportable by your stable upload capacity. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting bitrate heuristic—not a universal threshold or guarantee. Try wired Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi, another ingest server where available, and temporarily test without a VPN or network-prioritization software. Review firewall/security software and network drivers as possible contributors; OBS recommends obtaining network drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer (OBS connection troubleshooting).
- If rendering lag or GPU overload rises, reduce GPU demand. Close GPU-heavy applications, cap a game’s frame rate, lower its graphics settings, or simplify OBS scenes. Test a simple scene without a demanding game. If needed, reduce output resolution or frame rate to see whether the lower workload changes the result; this tests performance pressure, not whether a driver is defective (OBS encoding performance troubleshooting).
- Check YouTube output settings separately. Compare your chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder, and available upload capacity with YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance. The appropriate settings depend on those choices and your connection. Change one setting at a time.
- Only then investigate a graphics-driver regression. Consider rollback or clean reinstallation when the OBS log, encoder errors, or controlled tests point to the graphics driver path. The correct procedure depends on your operating system, GPU, and computer; follow instructions from the GPU or computer manufacturer rather than applying a generic rollback procedure.
- Escalate persistent connection issues. If connection tests do not resolve network symptoms, OBS recommends contacting your ISP; congestion or routing changes may be outside your control (OBS connection troubleshooting).
Common causes and what to try
Bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity
A speed test or advertised connection rate does not guarantee stable upload capacity to YouTube’s ingest server. If network-dropped frames rise, test a lower bitrate and compare results. OBS’s 75% upload-speed suggestion is a starting heuristic, not a promise that the stream will remain stable.

Wi-Fi, routing, or network software interrupts delivery
Wi-Fi interference, VPN or security software, bundled network-prioritization utilities, router or modem issues, network drivers, and faulty network hardware are among the possible connection contributors OBS identifies. Test a wired connection and temporarily isolate software or route variables one at a time; none is a confirmed cause until the test supports it.

GPU workload leaves too little time for OBS
Games with uncapped frame rates, other GPU-heavy applications, complex scenes, and demanding output settings can compete with OBS for GPU time. Reduce that load and check Stats again. A better result after reducing GPU work indicates a workload issue to address, but does not establish that the driver update was faulty.

Encoder error or YouTube warning needs its exact context
Record the precise OBS log message and YouTube warning text. A missing or insufficient incoming-video warning can warrant checking delivery and encoder configuration, but it does not mean the same thing in every case. Compare it with OBS Stats and YouTube’s current encoder guidance before changing drivers.

If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running continuously, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option rather than a repair for an OBS or graphics-driver fault. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
