Use a VLC Video source to play a multi-file playlist, but note that its loop and shuffle controls do not set a separate timed transition for each item. To control how long a scene change takes, set the duration in OBS’s Scene Transitions controls.
First, decide which transition you mean
- Scene transition: how long OBS takes to switch between scenes, for example by fading. Set this in Scene Transitions.
- Playlist progression: how OBS plays files in a multi-item playlist, including whether it repeats or shuffles them. Set this in a VLC Video source.
These are different controls. A scene fade duration is not a schedule for starting the next playlist item, and the documented VLC playlist controls do not provide a per-item clock schedule or crossfade duration. YouTube does not supply a separate playlist-transition-duration setting in the OBS workflow described here.

Set up one video to repeat
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene where the video should appear.
- Select the video file in the source properties.
- Enable Loop to repeat the file after playback completes.
This is the simplest setup when the always-on stream uses one recording. The loop setting repeats that file; it does not create transitions between different files.
Set up a playlist of multiple videos
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene.
- Add the media files to the source’s playlist, then arrange them in the order you want if you do not plan to shuffle.
- Enable Loop Playlist if playback should return to the beginning after the final item.
- Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want a randomized order rather than the listed sequence.
- Choose the source’s visibility behavior to determine what playback does while the source is hidden. Depending on the selected behavior, it can stop and restart, pause and resume, or continue playing.
Looping restarts the playlist after it runs out of media; shuffling changes playback order. Neither setting defines a separate delay, scheduled start time, or crossfade between each pair of items. OBS’s documented controls also do not guarantee gap-free or frame-accurate transitions on every system.

Set a scene fade or cut duration
- In OBS, find the Scene Transitions controls.
- Choose a transition, such as Fade or Cut. OBS lists both as available from the first launch.
- Set the transition’s duration in the Scene Transitions controls. The duration controls how long that scene change takes.
- If you use Quick Transitions, configure their durations separately as needed.
Use a cut for an immediate switch or a fade for a gradual scene change. Changing this duration does not change how long a playlist item plays or when the next playlist file begins. OBS also documents separate show and hide transition durations for scene items in its scene API; those are item visibility animation settings, not a playlist clock.
Check the result before relying on an always-on stream
- For a single recording, confirm it reaches the end and starts again with Loop enabled.
- For multiple recordings, confirm the VLC playlist advances as expected, and that Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist match your intended order.
- Hide and show the source to verify its visibility behavior.
- Switch between scenes to check the selected transition and its duration independently of playlist playback.
- Watch through an item boundary. The documented settings do not promise a seamless crossfade or eliminate every playback gap.
Troubleshooting
VLC Video is missing
Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS. In particular, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

The playlist stops after the last file
Enable Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source if you want playback to start over after the playlist ends.

The playlist order changes unexpectedly
Check whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled. Turn it off for the listed order.

Playback changes when the source is hidden
Review the VLC source’s visibility behavior. Choose the stop/restart, pause/resume, or always-play behavior that fits how your scenes use the source.
A scene fade does not change playlist timing
That is expected: Scene Transitions controls the scene change, not the duration or start time of an item in the playlist. Use the VLC playlist controls for multiple files.

There is a pause or abrupt change between files
The documented playlist controls cover loop, shuffle, and visibility behavior; they do not establish a guaranteed gap-free transition or a per-item crossfade. Do not assume changing the scene transition duration will fix a boundary between playlist items.
