YouTube’s current H.264 guidance for 720p is 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended, but a bitrate within that range will not be reliable if your upload connection fluctuates. Test a representative stream before relying on it for a long broadcast.
Set OBS to 720p without changing your canvas
In OBS, open Settings → Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720. This is the resolution OBS sends to YouTube. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace OBS uses to arrange sources; it can remain at your monitor, game, or source resolution while OBS scales the output to 720p. Changing the canvas alone does not set the stream output to 720p. OBS video settings.

Start at 30 FPS
For limited or inconsistent bandwidth and computer capacity, begin with 30 FPS. OBS notes that streaming at 60 FPS can be substantially more demanding on the system. YouTube lists the same H.264 bitrate range for 720p30 and 720p60, but that does not mean every computer or encoder can handle both equally well. Test 60 FPS only if your system and connection remain stable at 30 FPS.
Choose a bitrate your connection can hold
YouTube’s encoder recommendations list these 720p video bitrates. They are platform guidance, not a guarantee that your internet route can sustain them continuously. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

These figures are YouTube’s published recommendations, not measurements of Indian ISPs or any particular connection. YouTube recommends running an upload speed test. Judge your settings by the stable upload rate you can sustain at the time and place you will stream, accounting for normal variation and other devices using the connection.
Use a conservative starting point
OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic when choosing or lowering video bitrate to address dropped frames. It is not a YouTube rule or a guarantee: a speed test’s peak result does not establish a stable connection to YouTube’s ingest server. See OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting.

- If your stable upload can sustain YouTube’s H.264 recommendation, test 720p30 at a bitrate within the 3–8 Mbps range.
- If upload capacity is limited or fluctuates, start below what the connection can reliably sustain; OBS’s 75% heuristic can help estimate a first test value.
- If the connection cannot sustain even the listed minimum, lower the bitrate and assess the quality trade-off, or reduce the output resolution.
OBS’s hardware encoding guide gives 1280×720 at 30 FPS and 60 FPS recording bitrate suggestions for Apple VideoToolbox, but those are recording figures—not universal YouTube live recommendations. Do not use them as a substitute for YouTube’s live encoder guidance.

Configure OBS output and YouTube-compatible encoder settings
- Open Settings → Output. Set the video bitrate to the value your stable upload can support. In Advanced Output mode, check the streaming encoder settings; labels may vary by OBS version and selected encoder.
- Use CBR rate control. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR).
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Choose a supported video codec. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for its RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings. Which options appear depends on your OBS version and available encoder.
- Set stereo audio to 128 Kbps if using stereo, as listed in YouTube’s guidance.
Keep the resolution at 1280×720 and initially use 30 FPS while testing. A setting can comply with platform guidance and still fail on an unstable local connection or an overloaded computer.

Test the full stream before relying on it
- Run an upload speed test near the time and place you plan to stream. Use a sustained result, not a brief peak, and account for other users and devices sharing the connection.
- Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast. A static screen may not reveal problems that appear with a moving game, camera, or complex scene.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s dropped-frame indicators throughout the test.
- Adjust one variable at a time. If frames drop, lower the video bitrate first, then retest under the same workload.
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That can give viewers quality choices, but it cannot repair a broadcaster-side connection that cannot sustain the incoming stream.
Fix dropped frames and unstable streaming
OBS says dropped frames can mean the network connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. They can occur even when a speed test looks fast: a momentary result does not show whether the route to the ingest server will remain stable during the broadcast.

If Wi-Fi instability is the diagnosed issue, a Cat 6 Ethernet cable may be a practical way to test a wired connection. It will not raise the upload speed supplied by your ISP or fix congestion outside your local Wi-Fi link.
