Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf YouTube Studio says your stream’s video resolution is changing, first check what your encoder is actually sending—not just how the video looks in a viewer’s player. YouTube transcodes a live input into multiple playback formats, so a viewer seeing softer video does not by itself mean your incoming resolution changed. Compare the encoder’s live output with its configured resolution and frame rate, then use the specific message in YouTube Studio’s stream-health panel to guide any adjustment.
First, tell an incoming-resolution change from playback quality
There are two different points in the delivery chain: the encoder sends an incoming video stream to YouTube, and YouTube creates multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. A viewer can switch to a lower playback quality without the encoder changing its source resolution. YouTube describes this automatic transcoding in its live encoder settings guide.

If the warning appears in your creator-side live stream health panel, check the incoming signal and encoder. If the only symptom is a softer picture in the player, inspect the player’s selected quality separately before changing the encoder.
How to diagnose and fix the warning
- Locate the warning. Confirm whether it appears in YouTube Studio’s live stream health panel or whether viewers are reporting a change in playback quality. Treat a Studio health message as a signal to inspect the ingest and encoder; a player quality change alone is not proof of a source-resolution change.
- Compare configured settings with live output. While streaming, check the encoder’s actual outgoing resolution and frame rate, then compare them with the settings selected for the stream. YouTube’s Live Streaming API represents incoming resolution and frame rate as separate properties and supports automatic variable detection for both. See the LiveStreams API reference.
- Read the full health message and any configuration issue. YouTube provides a stream health status and configuration issues as diagnostic information. The API includes issue types such as low video bitrate and frame-rate mismatch. Those are possibilities to investigate, not proof that either one caused this particular resolution warning.
- Check upload capacity before increasing quality. YouTube recommends choosing a quality your internet connection can sustain and testing upload bitrate. Test under conditions representative of the actual stream, including audio and moving content, and watch the health panel while live. If delivery is unstable, reduce the stream’s demand or address the connection before trying a higher output setting.
- Match bitrate to the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the row for your actual output in the table below. Do not apply one bitrate target to every codec or resolution.
- Check the encoder’s baseline settings. YouTube recommends CBR bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Its encoder guide lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 support; verify that your encoder and streaming workflow support the combination you choose.
- Change one thing at a time and observe the result. If health data or encoder statistics indicate bitrate or connection trouble, lower stream demand or improve delivery, then monitor health again. If the encoder’s actual resolution changes despite stable delivery, investigate its configuration. The exact warning text’s definitive cause is not established in the available official documentation, so no single setting can be promised as a universal fix.

These are YouTube’s documented recommendations, not a guarantee that a given connection can sustain the selected bitrate. YouTube’s guide advises choosing a quality that is reliable for your connection and testing upload bitrate. If reliability is the concern, an Ethernet connection can be one way to test a wired path, but YouTube does not say a cable is required or that it will fix this warning.
Why the warning may persist
- The player looks different, but incoming output is stable: YouTube’s transcoding and the viewer’s playback selection may explain the difference. Verify the encoder output before changing it.
- Encoder output does not match its configured settings: investigate the encoder configuration and its live output statistics.
- Health diagnostics point to delivery or encoding issues: check bitrate, frame-rate match, and upload reliability, then make a measured adjustment.
- The message remains without a clear diagnostic: record the exact health message and compare it with live encoder output. The official documentation describes health and configuration diagnostics but does not establish one definite cause for this exact wording.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your stream is made from uploaded video and you want it to keep running without a computer at home, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, not a camera feed, so nothing has to stay on at home. Streams run as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. This is an alternative for keeping uploaded video live, not a fix for a demonstrated encoder source-resolution problem. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
