If a World of Warcraft update is slow, stuck at “Initializing,” or fails in Battle.net, first check whether it is still progressing and whether the app has a download limit set. If it has stopped or shows an error, note the exact message, restart Battle.net and its Agent process, then try Blizzard’s repair and connection troubleshooting steps if the problem continues.
First, identify the kind of download problem
World of Warcraft versions and game modes are installed and updated through the Battle.net desktop app; each version is installed separately. Confirm that Battle.net is updating the version you intend to play. Blizzard recommends searching support by the exact error message or problem description, so write down any error code before changing settings. “Slow,” “stuck at initializing,” and “failed to download files” describe different symptoms, not necessarily separate official errors.

- Slow but moving: Check the app’s bandwidth limit and consider whether network congestion may be affecting the download.
- Stopped or error-coded: Record the message or code, then close Battle.net and restart its downloader process.
- Repeated file or patch failure: Run Scan and Repair after the clean restart.
A pause in the progress display alone does not establish that the download has frozen. Give it time to show progress before treating a brief pause as a failure.

Check Battle.net’s download limit
Open Battle.net app settings and look for Network Bandwidth or download-limit settings. Blizzard support-forum guidance recommends checking for a limit when downloads are slow. If a cap is enabled, change it only if you meant to allow faster downloads and your connection or data plan can accommodate the extra use. Removing a cap does not guarantee a particular speed.

Allow for possible congestion
Network congestion is one possible explanation for a slow download, but a slow display is not proof of a current Battle.net outage. In an April 2, 2020 forum post, Blizzard support representative Hagut said increased internet-wide network demand had affected players’ game download speeds and advised leaving a download running if the issue continued during busy hours. That post is historical context, not a report of current conditions.
If the download has stopped or shows an error
- Capture the error. Note the exact wording and any code, such as
BLZBNTAGT000008A3. Search Blizzard support using that specific message or problem description. - Close Battle.net fully. Exit the desktop app. Open Task Manager and wait for
Agent.exeto disappear before reopening Battle.net. - Retry the update. If it still fails, restart the computer, open Battle.net again, and retry.
Blizzard lists this clean shutdown-and-retry sequence for the BLZBNTAGT000008A3 download error. It is a reasonable first restart step for a stopped download, but that specific error code should not be assumed when it is absent from your message.

If the patch keeps failing
Repair World of Warcraft files
In Battle.net, select the intended World of Warcraft installation and run Scan and Repair. Blizzard recommends this for damaged game files. Let the scan finish, then retry the update.

- Use Blizzard’s internet-connection optimization guidance; if you are on Wi-Fi, its troubleshooting guidance includes optimizing a wireless connection.
- Allow Blizzard software through your security software’s settings, following the security provider’s instructions.
- Close other applications that may conflict with the update or consume system resources.
Blizzard’s WoW technical troubleshooting guidance also includes restarting the computer, optimizing the internet connection, and configuring security software. If the steps above do not resolve the failure, contact Blizzard technical support with the exact error and the steps already attempted. The cited guidance does not establish deleting folders, reinstalling the game, changing DNS, using a VPN, or buying network equipment as universal first-line fixes.
