Switching from x264 to Intel Quick Sync (QSV) is a clue, not proof that QSV is causing your YouTube stream to lose frames. First check which OBS counter is rising: Dropped Frames (Network) points to the connection or configured bitrate; Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag and Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag point to OBS performance. The right fix depends on that distinction.
Identify which OBS counter is increasing
Open View > Docks > Statistics in OBS and watch the counters during a representative stream or test. Record the results and save the OBS log from the run. “Dropped frames” in everyday conversation can mean different things in OBS, and the counters lead to different troubleshooting paths.

- Dropped Frames (Network): OBS says this means the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. It does not, by itself, indicate an overloaded encoder. (OBS Project, Stream Connection Troubleshooting, 2024-09-30)
- Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag: OBS is struggling to render or composite frames in time, often because GPU capacity or scene workload is limiting the pipeline.
- Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag: OBS is not encoding frames quickly enough for the configured output. Check performance and encoder behavior rather than treating it as a network fault.
Rendering and encoding are distinct parts of the pipeline. OBS needs GPU resources to render scenes even when encoding is assigned to a hardware encoder. The log and Statistics panel can help identify which path is under pressure. (OBS Project, Encoding Performance Troubleshooting, 2021-06-12)

Check whether your stable upload capacity can sustain the stream bitrate. OBS’s connection guide suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting starting point, not a guarantee: capacity can vary, and a speed-test result does not prove the route to YouTube’s ingest server is consistently stable.

Work through the connection path
- Compare bitrate with reliable upload capacity. If the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate, lower it and test again.
- Try another YouTube ingest server if one is available. A different route may behave differently.
- Temporarily check network software and drivers. VPNs, security software, network-optimization utilities, or outdated network drivers can be relevant to the connection path. Change one item at a time so you can tell whether it matters.
- Check the physical network path. If you stream over Ethernet, test with a known-good Ethernet cable if the cable is suspect. OBS lists network hardware, including cables, among possible connection problems; replacing equipment is not a fix for rendering or encoding lag.
- Consider OBS’s network options only as tests. Its guide documents Windows-only network optimizations and TCP pacing. If changing the IP family to IPv4 does not help, OBS recommends returning it to the default. Dynamic bitrate can lower bitrate during congestion, but it does not repair the underlying fault and can reduce video quality.
The timing of the problem after switching encoders does not establish that QSV caused a network fault. First verify that the network counter, rather than a rendering or encoding counter, is the one increasing. OBS describes network-dropped frames as very unlikely to be caused by OBS Studio itself; that is general guidance, not a diagnosis of your particular setup.
If rendering or encoding lag rises
Reproduce the problem with the scene that puts the most demand on your system, then compare OBS Statistics and the log. A hardware encoder can reduce CPU work, but OBS still has to compose and render the scene; an overworked GPU can therefore affect the stream even with QSV selected.

- If rendering lag rises while gaming: cap the game’s frame rate or lower its graphics settings to leave GPU capacity for OBS.
- If lag persists: test a lower output resolution or change output from 60 fps to 30 fps. Simplify complex scenes and reduce resource-intensive sources or filters.
- On Windows: OBS says running as administrator can help resolve GPU overload in some cases. Treat it as a test, not a guaranteed fix.
- Use the log and counters: distinguish a rendering bottleneck from encoding lag before changing encoder settings again.
Change one setting at a time and check whether the relevant counter improves. Lowering resolution or frame rate can improve performance, but it also changes the stream output; choose settings that still suit your content.

OBS lists Intel QSV support on Windows and Linux with Intel HD Graphics on Core-i processors from generation 2xxx (Sandy Bridge) or newer. It recommends Core-i generation 4xxx (Haswell) or newer because early QSV versions produced lower image quality. Keep graphics drivers current and confirm which graphics adapter’s encoder OBS is using. OBS advises using the primary graphics adapter’s hardware encoder where a system has a discrete NVIDIA or AMD adapter. (OBS Project, Hardware Encoding, 2022-01-11)

There is no universal winner between x264 and QSV: the outcome depends on the system, workload, available CPU and GPU headroom, and image quality at the selected bitrate. To isolate the encoder change, preserve or duplicate your existing OBS profile and compare both encoders under otherwise matching conditions.
- Use the same representative scene, output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and test duration.
- Change only the encoder between the x264 and QSV runs.
- Include movement and audio similar to the intended stream, then monitor YouTube stream health and OBS Statistics.
- Save both logs and compare which counters rise and whether image quality differs at the same bitrate.
YouTube recommends testing before going live with movement and audio similar to the planned stream. Keeping other settings constant is a diagnostic way to make the encoder comparison useful, not a result established for your machine. Verify the YouTube output settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Choose the bitrate row that matches your codec, resolution, and frame rate, and make sure the connection can sustain it.

For example, YouTube lists 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60 as a recommended bitrate. That is YouTube’s recommendation for that codec and format, not a measurement of your upload connection or a guarantee that a particular route will sustain the stream. Check YouTube’s current table for the exact combination you use rather than applying this figure to other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs.

Common symptoms and next steps
| What you see | What it points to | What to test next |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped Frames (Network) increases | Unstable connection to ingest or bitrate beyond what the connection can sustain | Check stable upload capacity, reduce bitrate if needed, and investigate the network path. |
| Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag increases | Rendering workload or GPU capacity | Reduce competing GPU load, simplify the scene, or test lower output resolution or frame rate. |
| Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag increases | Encoding performance under the current workload and settings | Review the OBS log and compare x264 and QSV under controlled, otherwise identical conditions. |
| The problem appeared after switching, but the rising counter is unknown | Cause not yet established | Run a representative test while watching Statistics; do not assume the encoder is responsible. |
What information is needed for a precise diagnosis?
The cause in a particular setup cannot be determined from the encoder switch alone. A useful diagnosis needs the OBS log and Statistics, operating system and OBS version, Intel CPU/iGPU and driver, encoder settings, output resolution, frame rate and bitrate, connection type and stable upload capacity, and the name of the counter that increases.
Or let it run in the cloud
