What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Short answer: wkhtmltopdf is identified by its project as an LGPLv3 tool, and that license does not categorically prohibit commercial use. But what you must do depends on how you use and deliver it: running it internally, modifying it, distributing it, linking it into an application, or shipping a combined product are different situations. There is no blanket assurance for every deployment, and the project’s original creator said he would not offer a separate relicense.
What license does wkhtmltopdf use?
The wkhtmltopdf project describes both wkhtmltopdf and its companion wkhtmltoimage as open-source command-line tools under the GNU Lesser General Public License version 3 (LGPLv3). The project repository labels its license LGPL-3.0 and includes the LGPLv3 text. The project describes the tools as headless renderers built on Qt WebKit.

For a compliance decision, read the license text in the repository rather than relying on a short summary. The relevant obligations turn on the software and dependencies included, whether you changed or combined covered code, and what you convey to someone else.

Commercial use is not automatically barred by the LGPLv3. The more important question is how the software is used and whether it is conveyed to customers or other recipients. Internal use, a server that generates output for users, a downloadable installer, and an application that links to a library are not interchangeable scenarios.
#1 Best Overall
The LGPLv3 distinguishes an application using a library from a combined work made by combining or linking an application with that library. For certain combined works, the license text specifies conditions that can include prominent notices, copies of the GNU GPL and LGPL documents, and a way for recipients to modify the library and use the modified version with the application. Depending on the arrangement, that can involve a suitable shared-library mechanism or source and relinking materials under the license’s terms. The text also addresses modified versions and installation information in defined circumstances.
Those are high-level guideposts, not a determination that a particular package complies. The applicable route depends on the actual integration and conveyance, so neither “closed-source software is always forbidden” nor “calling a command-line program is always exempt” is a safe universal rule.
How the deployment model changes the questions
Running wkhtmltopdf only inside your organization
If your team uses the tool internally and does not convey it to another party, distribution-related provisions may not be the central issue. Still, identify the exact executable, Qt and other included dependencies, and any modifications before relying on that distinction. A deployment described as “internal” can raise different questions if customers receive a container, appliance, or other package containing the software.
Calling it from a server-side web application
A developer asked the project in 2017 about a web program running on a central server, called through a Java class, where the developer said wkhtmltopdf was neither modified nor distributed. That is a useful example of the question developers ask, not a legal holding about every server deployment. In particular, providing a downloadable client, container, or other combined package would change the facts to analyze.

Shipping a binary, installer, or container
If you deliver wkhtmltopdf or a package containing it, review the LGPLv3’s conveyance conditions. Work out what components the package includes, what notices and license documents must accompany it, and which method the license permits for recipients to modify the library and use their modified version with the application. A container is not automatically different from other distribution merely because it is delivered as an image.
Linking, combining, or modifying covered software
An application that links to a library or forms a combined work can bring the LGPLv3’s relinking and related provisions into focus. Modifications to covered code can add further obligations. The technical details matter: do not assume that a subprocess call, static or shared linking, or a particular packaging method has the same result without checking the license against your implementation.
Is there a separate commercial wkhtmltopdf license?
No separate project relicense is identified in the project materials summarized here. On November 6, 2014, original creator Jakob Truelsen wrote in a project mailing-list discussion: “I will not relicense wkhtmltopdf, if LGPL is not good for you, then use some something else. You cannot use wkhtmltopdf without qt, which is LGPL anyhow.” That is historical maintainer guidance, not a current legal opinion or a substitute commercial license offer.
Version, maintenance, and security considerations
Project status
The official downloads page describes 0.12.6 as the stable series and gives June 11, 2020 as its release date. The GitHub repository says it was archived by its owner on January 2, 2023 and is read-only. Those dates are relevant when evaluating the software for a new deployment; they do not change the license terms by themselves.

Do not render untrusted HTML without protection
The project warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” Treat this as a serious security warning, not merely a rendering caveat. The project status page also recommends considering AppArmor or SELinux. Review the warning and apply appropriate isolation and input controls before exposing a renderer to user-supplied content.

- Inventory the software. Record the wkhtmltopdf version, Qt and other bundled dependencies, and whether any covered component has been patched or modified.
- Map what recipients receive. Determine whether the tool is only run on your infrastructure or is included in a binary, installer, container, appliance, or other deliverable.
- Describe the integration accurately. Note whether your program invokes a separate executable, links to a library, or otherwise forms a combined work. Do not treat these arrangements as equivalent without analysis.
- Check the license obligations for that exact design. Use the repository’s LGPLv3 text to determine which notices, license copies, source materials, relinking method, or installation information apply to your conveyance and modifications.
- Get advice on unresolved cases. If you distribute a product or depend on a particular interpretation, ask qualified counsel to review the actual package, integration, contractual terms, and relevant jurisdiction.
Alternatives for different rendering needs
The project suggests considering WeasyPrint or the commercial tool Prince for reports generated from HTML that you control. For sites that rely on dynamic JavaScript, it separately suggests Puppeteer. These are project recommendations, not an independent feature, price, performance, or maintenance comparison; assess each option against your content and deployment requirements.
If your requirement is an API-driven website screenshot or PDF capture rather than choosing a replacement HTML renderer, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it accepts consent banners before capture and removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Its response indicates whether a page was clean, blocked, blank, failed, or served from cache, and only clean shots are billed. That is a different use case from replacing wkhtmltopdf in a report-generation stack.
ScreenshotNeo includes 1,000 screenshots per month on its free plan with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up free for ScreenshotNeo.
