Use wkhtmltoimage 'https://example.invalid/invoice' invoice.png to render an accessible invoice webpage to an image. Replace the example URL with the page URL and choose an image extension such as .png or .jpg. This is the command pattern, not a verified procedure for capturing a logged-in GST Portal page: current portal authentication and rendering compatibility have not been established.

Choose between an image and an official GST download
A screenshot-like image is useful when you need to preserve how invoice information appears on a rendered page. It is not the same thing as downloading the invoice or return data. The GST Portal documents PDF and JSON download routes for e-invoices, Excel export of e-invoice details in GSTR-1, and a PDF summary for GSTR-1. Which route applies depends on the document or return workflow and your access to it.

Run a basic wkhtmltoimage capture

- Identify the input. Use a page URL that the renderer can access without an interactive login, or a local HTML file you are authorized to render.
- Quote URLs. Quoting helps prevent shell-special characters in a URL from being interpreted by your shell.
- Choose an output filename. Use an extension such as
.pngor.jpg; the manual also documents format and JPEG quality controls. - Run the command.
wkhtmltoimage 'https://example.invalid/invoice' invoice.png - Inspect the result. Confirm the image includes the required invoice text, totals, tax details, any QR code, and the intended page boundaries, and that the details are legible.
For a local HTML file, the input can instead be a filename, for example wkhtmltoimage invoice.html invoice.png. The manual documents local-file access restrictions; grant access narrowly only if the page needs local resources.
Adjust size, crop, format, and page rendering
Use options only to solve a specific capture problem. The switches below are documented by the wkhtmltoimage manual; they describe renderer capabilities, not guaranteed compatibility with GST Portal pages.

--cookiearguments,--cookie-jar, and custom headers. It also lists HTTP authentication and SSL client-certificate options. These features do not demonstrate that GST Portal authentication will succeed.
For example, this generic command requests a wider rendering and a delay before capture: wkhtmltoimage --width 1440 --javascript-delay 2000 'https://example.invalid/invoice' invoice.png. The width and delay are example choices, not GST Portal requirements; adjust them only after inspecting the output.
Protect GST credentials and session data
Do not put a GST Portal password, OTP, session cookie, or other secret in a command that may be saved in shell history, a shared script, or logs. Although the manual documents cookies and headers, the cited documentation does not establish that the renderer supports the portal’s current login, OTP flow, scripts, or security controls. Do not bypass access restrictions; use an official download route when available.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The command is not found: The executable is unavailable in the current environment or is not on the shell’s path. Install a suitable build for your operating system or use its full executable path; the upstream site describes precompiled binaries and source builds, but check the package or build status you intend to use.
- The page is blank or incomplete: The page may depend on JavaScript, a login flow, or content the renderer cannot access. Try the documented JavaScript and wait controls for a page you can access without interactive authentication. If it remains incomplete, use the portal’s own download feature rather than assuming a screenshot command can handle the protected page.
- Text or layout is clipped: Increase the screen width or adjust crop dimensions and coordinates. Check the full output before relying on it; a crop can omit invoice fields.
- Images or dynamic content are missing: The page may not have finished rendering or may rely on behavior unsupported by the renderer. A delay or documented window-status wait may help only when the page exposes the expected condition.
- A local page cannot load local assets: Local-file access is restricted by default in relevant configurations. Use the manual’s narrowly scoped
--allowcontrol for the required directory rather than enabling broad access without a need. - GST login or OTP does not work: That behavior is unverified for the current portal and renderer. Do not treat documented cookie or header switches as proof of compatibility; use an authorized portal download workflow instead.
Maintenance and reliability considerations
The upstream project website describes the command-line tools as LGPLv3 open source and says they can be obtained as precompiled binaries or built from source. wkhtmltopdf project website The upstream GitHub repository page says it was archived on January 2, 2023. Repository archive notice That status applies to that repository; it does not establish that no maintained fork or package exists. Check the status of the exact build you plan to deploy, especially before depending on it for repeated or sensitive work.

That has not been established for the current portal. Use the documented portal download route if available, and do not expose credentials or session data in scripts or command history.
Can I convert a downloaded GST PDF to an image with this command?
The command described here renders HTML pages to images; the GST Portal’s PDF download is a separate document workflow. Use a PDF-to-image conversion step if the source is already a PDF.
