There is no single OBS bitrate that is stable on every Indian mobile broadband connection. Measure upload performance where and when you plan to stream, start conservatively, then test a representative broadcast while checking OBS’s dropped-frame counter and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. If the connection cannot sustain the bitrate for your chosen resolution and frame rate, lower one or both and test again.
Why OBS drops frames on mobile broadband
OBS describes dropped frames as a connection to the remote streaming server that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Its troubleshooting guide says the software itself is extremely unlikely to be the cause. On mobile broadband, upload capacity and stability can vary with location, time, carrier conditions, and the route to YouTube’s ingest server. An advertised plan speed—or one speed-test result—does not prove that the connection can sustain a live stream.

OBS’s guide, dated September 30, 2024, offers a starting heuristic: set video bitrate to 75% of total upload speed. That is general OBS guidance, not an India-specific benchmark or a guarantee. Use measurements from your actual streaming location and validate them with a test stream.

Measure upload where you will stream
At the planned location and time, run an upload speed test. Repeat it if conditions vary, such as during busier hours or when using a different mobile connection. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate with a speed test and testing the stream before going live.

Pick the resolution and frame rate you can support
Use YouTube’s published encoder settings as a reference, not as a claim about Indian network speeds. The following values are YouTube’s published minimum and recommended bitrates in Mbps; they are not measurements of mobile broadband capacity.
YouTube input H.264 minimum H.264 recommended AV1 or H.265 minimum AV1 or H.265 recommended 1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps 1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps 4 Mbps 12 Mbps 720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps 720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps 480p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps YouTube’s table includes additional settings, including 1440p and 4K; check its current guidance because platform values can change. Use AV1 or H.265 only if your encoder and workflow support them. If you cannot sustain the relevant recommended bitrate with headroom, step down resolution or frame rate rather than insisting on 1080p or 60 fps.

Set a conservative OBS starting point
Use OBS’s 75%-of-total-upload-speed heuristic as an initial video bitrate, then check whether that rate is compatible with the YouTube settings you selected and the total outgoing stream. For instance, if the available upload cannot support the chosen resolution’s published minimum reliably, reduce resolution or frame rate and reassess; a percentage calculation cannot make an unstable uplink stable.

Configure the encoder for YouTube
YouTube recommends CBR (constant bitrate) and a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. It recommends RTMPS. Enter the stream key carefully in the streaming software and keep it private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings page for the full setup details.

Test with a representative stream
Before the real broadcast, send a test with audio and movement similar to the planned event. Watch OBS’s network dropped-frame counter and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. A static image or a brief test may not expose the same problems as a longer, more demanding broadcast.
What to do when the counter rises
If OBS’s dropped-frame counter increases during the test, lower the video bitrate first and test again. If the problem continues, work through these network checks from OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance:

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- Try another YouTube ingest server if your streaming software offers that option.
- Confirm OBS’s Bind to IP setting is set to Default.
- Test IPv4-only, then revert if it makes no difference.
- On Windows, test OBS’s network optimizations and TCP pacing options.
- Check whether a VPN, firewall or security suite, network-prioritization utility, outdated network driver, router, modem, cable, or Wi-Fi connection is affecting the stream.
- If your computer connects to a router over Wi-Fi, try wired Ethernet where possible. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable. Ethernet only addresses that local wireless link; it will not repair a weak cellular uplink, carrier congestion, or a poor route to YouTube.
- If the connection still drops after these checks, contact your ISP or mobile provider. Share when and where the issue happens and the results of repeated tests.
OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can lower the bitrate when the connection falters, which may reduce dropped frames at the cost of image quality. OBS notes that it does not fix the underlying connection problem.
Tell stream drops apart from viewer buffering
Check OBS’s dropped-frame counter first. Rising network drops point to the creator’s connection to the streaming server. Viewer buffering is a separate symptom: some viewers may have problems because of their location, device, or internet connection even when OBS reports no dropped frames. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats; lowering the stream’s bitrate or quality may help reach viewers on slower connections, but it does not guarantee that every viewer will have uninterrupted playback.
