1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can run a 24/7 YouTube stream of a true-crime podcast archive by sending a continuous feed from an encoder to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. For a reliable YouTube replay, plan sessions shorter than 12 hours, keep a local recording, and verify the rights and presentation of every episode and asset before streaming. A single event longer than 12 hours may not be archived by YouTube.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream: it must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction from the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of launch. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance explains the requirements.
- An encoder. YouTube supports software encoders and standalone hardware encoders; the right choice depends on your operating and production needs. Its documentation does not establish that one type is inherently more reliable for unattended use.
- A playlist or other playback system that can feed the episodes continuously, plus a plan for session rollover and restart. The precise setup depends on the encoder or automation system you choose.
- Storage and a process for making and checking local recordings, if you want a dependable copy independent of YouTube’s archive.
- Rights to livestream and archive all narration, music, clips, archival audio, artwork, and other third-party material in every relevant territory.
Set up the YouTube stream
- Verify the channel and enable live streaming. Check channel eligibility and restrictions, then enable streaming in advance. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Choose and configure the encoder. Prepare the episodes and the visuals that will accompany them, such as a slate if appropriate for your format. YouTube’s cited setup guidance does not require a particular visual layout.
- Create or schedule an event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that event into the matching fields in your encoder. Keep the key private; anyone with access may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Start the feed and inspect the preview. Start sending from the encoder, check the Live Control Room preview, and confirm the event is receiving the intended audio and visuals before going live.
- Plan session changes and local recording. Use events shorter than 12 hours if YouTube’s automatic replay matters to you. Record locally, confirm the recording is usable after each session, and test your rollover process before relying on it for continuous listening.
- Monitor and document operations. Keep a runbook for restarting the encoder, handling stream keys, rolling between events, and responding to interruptions. YouTube’s documentation does not prescribe a specific automation product or guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
Why a single 24-hour event is risky for an archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. That makes one indefinitely running event a poor fit if you expect a complete YouTube replay. Schedule shorter sessions and retain local recordings as a separate master. YouTube’s archive guidance describes this limitation.

Shorter events introduce a continuity trade-off: listeners may encounter a handoff between sessions, and how seamless that handoff is depends on the encoder or automation system. Test the exact rollover configuration you intend to use; do not assume it will be gapless. A local recording helps preserve a copy, but it does not itself make the YouTube transition seamless.

Clear rights before putting episodes on air
Having published a podcast episode does not by itself establish that you can livestream every element in it or leave the resulting broadcast available as an archive. Check the contracts and permissions for each episode and asset, and confirm that they cover YouTube livestreaming and archived playback in the territories where the content will be available. The answer depends on your agreements and applicable law; YouTube’s terms do not decide the rights for a particular creator.

- Review every asset: narration, music beds and themes, clips, archival recordings, artwork, and any other third-party material.
- Check Content ID arrangements: YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party matches. An unresolved match can interrupt or terminate the stream. Even if you have a license, the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel in Content ID to prevent a match from disrupting the live feed.
- Check the replay separately: archived broadcasts can receive Content ID claims after the live event ends, so monitor the finished recording as well.
- Keep documentation: retain licenses, permissions, and any allowlisting confirmation alongside the relevant episodes.
YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions place responsibility on the provider for necessary rights, including music licensing. They state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.”
Handle true-crime material responsibly
YouTube’s violent or graphic content policy applies to livestreams as well as other video. Documentary or educational context may matter, but for some exceptions that context must be present in the content itself; a title or description alone is not enough. Depending on context and presentation, graphic material may be age-restricted or removed. Review both the audio and visuals, including thumbnails and edits, and avoid shock-oriented framing. See YouTube’s violent or graphic content policy.

| Approach | What it involves | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Software encoder | Run playback and stream output through encoder software connected to the YouTube event. | Consider unattended operation, restart behavior, operator skill, and the complexity of the production. YouTube confirms software encoders are supported but does not provide a product-level reliability comparison. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | Use a dedicated hardware device to send the stream to YouTube. | Assess how it will handle unattended playback, restarts, and session changes. YouTube supports this encoder type but does not establish a reliability advantage over software. |
| One continuous YouTube event | Keep one event running indefinitely. | Not suitable when a complete YouTube replay is important: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. |
| Shorter scheduled events | Roll over between sessions under 12 hours and retain local recordings. | Better aligned with YouTube’s stated archive behavior, but the exact handoff and continuity depend on your chosen encoder or automation and must be tested. |
