1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOBS error 10054 means Windows reported that an existing network connection was reset by its peer. It does not identify who or what caused the reset. If a YouTube stream disconnects with this error, check OBS’s connection settings, bitrate, VPN or security software, and network path before replacing equipment or blaming YouTube.
What OBS error 10054 means
Windows identifies error 10054 as WSAECONNRESET: “An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.” In practical terms, the connection OBS was using ended with a reset. That describes the event, not its root cause. It does not prove that YouTube, OBS, your router, Wi-Fi, firewall, or any specific network device is responsible. Microsoft’s Windows Sockets error-code reference lists several ways a reset can occur, including a peer application stopping, a network interface being disabled, or keep-alive activity detecting a failure.

OBS says dropped frames and intermittent disconnections point to a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server, or a connection that cannot sustain the selected bitrate. Those symptoms can have different causes and are typically outside OBS Studio’s control. That guidance does not establish a YouTube-specific cause for 10054. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide is dated September 30, 2024; settings and labels can change between OBS versions.

1. Test the ingest server and bitrate
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. If the streaming service offers another server or ingest location, try it and see whether the disconnection recurs.
- Open Settings → Output and review the video bitrate. Reduce it if your upload connection cannot sustain it consistently or if it exceeds the streaming service’s limits.
OBS’s 2024 guide suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed. Treat this as a rule of thumb, not a guaranteed YouTube setting: the relevant question is whether upload speed is stable enough to support the bitrate over time. A lower bitrate may improve stability but can reduce picture quality.
2. Check OBS’s Windows network options
- Open Settings → Advanced → Network.
- Leave Bind to IP set to Default, as OBS recommends.
- Test Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing. Change one option at a time, then test a stream so you can identify any effect.
- You can also test IPv4 Only. If it makes no difference, return to the default setting that allows IPv4 and IPv6.
- Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment may help OBS reduce dropped frames when the connection cannot keep up. It does not repair the underlying network problem, and its bitrate reductions can lower video quality.
These options are reversible diagnostic tests, not universal fixes. If labels or paths differ in your installed OBS version, check that version’s current interface.

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
3. Temporarily isolate VPN and security software
- If you use a VPN, test a stream with it disconnected. A VPN can make the connection unstable; if the test changes nothing, restore your usual setup.
- Security software can interfere with traffic from OBS to the stream server. Temporarily test without the suspected software only if you can do so safely. If the test shows it is the cause, add an OBS exception and re-enable protection rather than leaving protection disabled.
- Look for bundled network-prioritization utilities, which can also affect OBS traffic. Temporarily disable a suspected utility to test, then restore it if it makes no difference.
4. Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, test with an Ethernet connection if practical. This helps isolate whether wireless instability is involved; it is not a guaranteed fix for every 10054 error. If you do not have a suitable cable, a Cat 6 Ethernet cable is one option, but buying a cable alone cannot diagnose or resolve problems elsewhere on the network path.

OBS also recommends getting network-adapter drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer. Check that source for the driver appropriate to your hardware rather than assuming a driver update will resolve the error.

5. Restart the modem and router
Restart both your modem and router, then test again. Before replacing cables, a network card, modem, router, switch, or extender, consider that any of these could be faulty but none is implicated by error 10054 alone. If you are unsure, OBS advises speaking with your internet service provider before replacing equipment.
How to decide what to try next
| Test | What it helps isolate | Trade-off or caution |
|---|---|---|
| Try another available stream server | Whether the connection behaves differently with another ingest option | Only applicable when the service offers a choice; it does not prove the original server was at fault. |
| Lower the bitrate | Whether the connection can sustain a lower data rate | May reduce video quality; 75% of total upload speed is OBS’s 2024 starting rule of thumb, not a guarantee. |
| Test OBS network options | Whether a reversible OBS setting affects the connection | Change one option at a time. Dynamic bitrate can reduce quality and does not fix the underlying issue. |
| Temporarily test without a VPN or suspected software | Whether that software is interfering with the OBS-to-server path | Keep tests temporary; restore protection and add an OBS exception if security software is confirmed as the cause. |
| Try Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi | Whether the wireless connection may be unstable | A wired test is diagnostic, not a guaranteed cure. |
| Ask your ISP to investigate | Congestion or routing problems beyond your PC and home equipment | Useful when local checks have not resolved recurring disconnections. |
If the stream still disconnects
If the OBS settings, software checks, wired test, and restart do not resolve the problem, contact your ISP and describe when the disconnections happen and which checks you tried. Congestion or routing outside your home network may require the ISP’s help. Error 10054 by itself is not enough to conclude that YouTube deliberately reset the stream or that a particular YouTube ingest fault occurred.
