To reduce font-related screenshot drift, make the test container’s font environment explicit: include the licensed font files the page expects, rebuild the font cache, verify the browser can resolve the intended family and style, and wait for page-loaded web fonts before capturing. Then use the same container image, browser build, viewport, and relevant rendering settings for both baselines and CI. Docker makes those inputs easier to control; it does not guarantee identical pixels across every host or graphics stack.
Why custom fonts make screenshots drift
A screenshot can differ even when the page code has not changed if the browser cannot find the requested font and substitutes another one. Different glyph widths and metrics change line breaks, element dimensions, and alignment, producing pixel differences across much of the page. Fontconfig provides font configuration and matching on Linux; if the requested family or style is unavailable, the browser may resolve a fallback instead. Cloudflare’s managed Chromium documentation likewise describes fallback when a requested font is unavailable. Freedesktop Fontconfig documentation and Cloudflare custom fonts documentation explain these behaviors.

There are two distinct font sources to check: system fonts installed in the test image, and web fonts loaded by the page. A font file copied into a Docker build stage is not useful if the test browser runs in a different final stage or container. A web font may be present in the application but not yet loaded when the screenshot is taken.

Copy the font files into the runtime
Place the same font files the application expects in a directory visible to Fontconfig in the image that actually runs the browser. Confirm they are readable by the user running the tests. Check the font license before committing or redistributing font files in a Docker image.
#1 Best Overall
For example, if your project keeps licensed font files in a repository directory, copy that directory into the final runtime image, not only into an intermediate build stage. The destination directory must be one Fontconfig scans or be configured as an application-provided font directory. The exact path depends on your base image and Fontconfig configuration; verify it from inside the image rather than assuming a path works everywhere.
Refresh the font cache
After adding the files, run fc-cache in the final image. The Debian testing fc-cache(1) manual says the command scans configured font directories and creates font information cache files: fc-cache manual.
Rank #2
Then inspect font discovery from the same image and user account used by the test suite. Use Fontconfig’s listing or matching tools to check the exact family and requested style. A file existing on disk does not prove that Fontconfig discovered it, and a generic sans-serif match does not prove that a particular family resolved as intended.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWait for fonts loaded by the page
System installation does not resolve timing issues for fonts fetched by a page. If the page uses a remote or bundled web font, make the screenshot step wait until the page’s font loading has finished, then check that the expected font is actually available before capturing. The browser must also be able to reach the font source; for a remote URL, confirm network access and a successful response in CI.
Rank #3
The exact wait method depends on the browser automation framework and version, so verify its current API before adding code. Cloudflare Browser Run documents runtime font availability and font injection as an option in its managed environment; that is a different deployment model from self-managed Docker. Cloudflare’s custom fonts documentation was marked last updated September 26, 2026, and notes that screenshots and PDFs use fonts available to the managed browser environment, with Chromium falling back when a requested font is unavailable.
Pin the inputs that affect rendering
Generate baselines and run comparisons using the same container image and browser build. Keep the viewport fixed, and control other inputs that matter to your page, such as installed OS packages, locale, timezone, browser flags, and graphics backend. A Docker-based visual-testing guide illustrates these controls, but its sample Playwright image tag is old; do not treat that tag as a current recommendation. Docker visual testing guide and font rendering differences guide.
For reproducibility, compare runs from the same image digest and configuration before changing visual-diff thresholds. Docker helps hold the environment steady, but it does not establish a universal, deterministic graphics stack or guarantee identical rendering on every host.

Use this diagnostic sequence when screenshots differ
- Reproduce in the test runtime. Run the test container interactively or add diagnostics to the same image and under the same user account as the suite.
- Check the files. Confirm the expected font files are in the final runtime image and readable by the test user.
- Check discovery and style matching. Use Fontconfig tools inside the container to confirm the exact family and requested style are available. Do not infer a successful match from the presence of a file or a generic sans-serif family.
- Rebuild the cache. Run
fc-cacheafter adding fonts, then repeat the discovery check. - Check fallback-sensitive content. Test the scripts and glyph ranges used on the page, particularly for multilingual text and icon fonts. A family can be available while some characters still come from fallback fonts.
- Check web-font loading. Capture only after page fonts have loaded; for remote fonts, verify CI network access and successful responses.
- Compare controlled runs. Use the same image digest, browser build, viewport, and rendering configuration before adjusting diff thresholds.
Make intentional changes visible in baseline reviews
A font file, browser build, base image, or rendering setting change can legitimately alter screenshots. Review the diff and update baselines as a documented change when the new rendering is intended. Do not widen pixel-diff thresholds as a substitute for identifying which font the runtime selected.

Fontconfig documents SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH as a timestamp source that fc-cache can use instead of font file modification times when deciding whether cache data needs regeneration, supporting reproducible builds. This controls an input to cache generation; it does not freeze the browser renderer or make screenshot PNGs deterministic on its own. Fontconfig documentation.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF; its clean-shot steps accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets, and each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client.
Example cURL request (replace the URL as needed):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH make screenshot images deterministic?
No. Fontconfig documents it as an input that can make fc-cache regeneration behavior reproducible; it does not lock the browser renderer or guarantee identical PNG pixels.
Can I rely on a font being installed if its file is in the container?
No. Confirm Fontconfig discovers and matches the intended family and style inside the final test image.
