If an OBS playlist stops showing videos you just added, first check which source type you are using. The built-in VLC Video source, the third-party Media Playlist Source plugin, and a Browser Source refresh in different ways. For VLC Video, inspect the playlist in the source properties; for the plugin, change a setting and save to refresh added-folder contents. Browser Source refresh controls reload a web page, not a media playlist.
Identify the playlist source before refreshing it
In OBS Studio, look at the source name and type in the Sources list, then open that source’s properties if needed. The fix depends on whether the list is a VLC playlist, a plugin playlist, a web page, or a single media file.

- VLC Video: OBS’s built-in playlist source. It requires VLC to be installed for the source to appear. The OBS Project says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS Project: Media Sources.
- Media Playlist Source: a third-party plugin with its own folder-refresh behavior. Its author says folder contents refresh when a setting is changed and saved. Plugin listing and updates.
- Browser Source: displays a web page. Its cache and scene-activation refresh controls reload the page, not a VLC playlist. OBS Project: Browser Source.
- Media Source: plays a media file. Options such as restarting playback when active or closing the file when inactive control playback; they are not documented folder-scanning controls. OBS Project: Media Sources.
Refresh the built-in VLC Video playlist
- In Sources, select the VLC Video source and open Properties.
- Inspect the playlist entries. Confirm the newly added videos appear at the paths you expect. If they do not, add or correct the entries in the playlist there; OBS’s documentation describes playlist playback but does not document a folder-scan refresh button or continuous folder scanning for VLC Video.
- Confirm VLC is installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC; otherwise VLC Video may not be available to OBS. The OBS Project documents this requirement on its Media Sources page.
- If an added video is listed but does not play as expected, check the playlist order and its loop and shuffle settings. These affect playback, not whether OBS discovers new folder contents.
Do not use a Browser Source cache refresh as a substitute, and do not assume restarting a single-file Media Source will update a VLC playlist. Those actions are not documented as playlist-folder refresh mechanisms.

Refresh folder contents in Media Playlist Source
- Select the Media Playlist Source plugin source and open its properties.
- Change a setting, then save the properties. According to the plugin author’s listing, saving a changed setting triggers a refresh of added-folder contents; folders are not continuously refreshed automatically.
- If the filename displayed in the properties is stale, close and reopen the properties window. The listing says reopening it refreshes that display.
- Check the plugin listing’s current OBS-version requirement before installing or updating. Its update notes say version 0.1.0 raised the minimum requirement to OBS 31, and later listing details may change.
These are plugin-specific behaviors; they do not describe the built-in VLC Video source.

What Browser Source and Media Source refresh controls actually do
Browser Source refresh options reload its current web page, either on request or when its scene becomes active. They do not refresh a playlist in VLC Video or the Media Playlist Source plugin. Media Source options such as restarting playback when a source becomes active are playback controls for a media file, not instructions to scan a folder for newly added videos. Use the properties and refresh behavior for the source type that actually holds your playlist.
When the new video still does not appear
- The source is VLC Video and the entry is missing: check and update the playlist entries in its properties. Do not expect an undocumented automatic folder scan.
- VLC Video is unavailable: install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; the official OBS note specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- The source is the plugin and it uses folders: change a setting and save the properties to trigger the documented manual refresh.
- The plugin’s filename display looks old: reopen the properties window to refresh that display.
- You are refreshing a Browser Source: that reloads page content only. Verify that the playlist is not actually a different source type.
- You are using Media Source: its restart and close-file options do not scan folders. Use a playlist-capable source if you need a list of videos.
If the behavior still differs, note the source type, OBS version, operating system, and plugin version (if any). Those details determine which documented behavior applies.
