Check for accidental spaces at the beginning or end, or between characters, and remove only spaces that are clearly stray. YouTube’s help guidance does not identify a specific whitespace bug or prescribe a whitespace-specific fix, so treat this as a careful field check—not proof that YouTube or your encoder added spaces.
Check the key and field first
- Open the correct stream in YouTube Studio. Go to the Live Control Room and confirm you have selected the stream whose key your encoder should use.
- Copy the stream key again. Paste it into the encoder’s Stream Key field. Do not paste it into the server or stream URL field: YouTube’s setup workflow treats the server URL and stream key as separate settings.
- Inspect the pasted value. Look for a space before the first character, after the last character, or visibly between characters. Remove only characters that are clearly accidental; do not change the key itself. If the field masks the key, use the encoder’s available reveal control, if any, and avoid exposing the value to other people.
- Start the encoder again. If it still reports a startup error, use YouTube’s documented recovery: get a new stream key in the Live Control Room and update the encoder with that key.
The inspection step is practical advice based on the copy-and-paste workflow, not a whitespace remedy documented by YouTube. The official guidance establishes where the key belongs and what to do if an encoder cannot start; it does not establish why a particular browser, clipboard, operating system, or encoder might display spaces.

Make sure the problem is actually the key
A stream key is credential-like: YouTube describes stream keys as being like a stream’s password and address. It tells YouTube where to accept the encoder’s feed. Keep it private, and do not post a screenshot or message containing it.

A URL/key mix-up is different from extra spaces.
- Startup error continues: Generate a new key in Live Control Room and replace the old value in the encoder. YouTube says channel owners or managers can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot.
- Key may have been exposed: Reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. Treat a shared key as compromised rather than merely deleting the visible message.
Separate key-entry errors from RTMPS connection errors
An SSL or connection error does not by itself show that the key contains spaces. Check the server URL and connection protocol separately. If you intend to use RTMPS, make sure the URL is the correct RTMPS server address and that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance notes that specifying port 443 may address an SSL error. These are server/protocol checks, not a whitespace fix.

If your setup uses an HLS backup URL
HLS backup configuration is not the same as the usual separate server-URL and stream-key fields: YouTube says the HLS backup server URL already contains the key, so you do not need to copy the key separately for that backup URL. Follow the field instructions for the specific connection type you selected rather than adding a second key where it is not requested.
