If YouTube RTMP ingest stopped working immediately after a cloud firewall change, check the stream URL and protocol first, then test outbound connectivity from the server and review the egress policy that changed. The timing makes the firewall a strong clue, not proof: the cloud provider, region and exact rule are unknown, so no single port or provider-specific rule can be identified as the fix.
Start with the failure symptom
Separate a connection failure from an unstable stream. A timeout or SSL error points first to the URL, protocol support or network path. If the encoder connects but the stream drops, also check available upload bandwidth and connection stability.

- Connection timeout: confirm the server URL and RTMPS support, then investigate outbound connectivity from the cloud host.
- SSL error: verify that the URL is the RTMPS URL and that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for this error suggests specifying port 443.
- Connects, then stutters or drops: compare the stream’s total bitrate with available upload capacity and check whether the connection is reliable.
Verify the YouTube ingest URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and copy the stream URL for the stream you are configuring.
- Check that you copied the RTMPS URL, rather than an ordinary RTMP URL. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which is RTMP carried over a TLS/SSL connection for encryption.
- Confirm that the encoder is using the stream key associated with that YouTube stream. Check for accidental whitespace, a stale key, or a URL/key pair copied from a different stream configuration.
- In the encoder, confirm explicit RTMPS support and check that you are using a current version. If the correct RTMPS URL still produces an SSL error, YouTube suggests trying port 443 in the URL or encoder configuration. This is troubleshooting guidance for that SSL-error case, not evidence that every YouTube endpoint or cloud firewall must use port 443 exclusively.
Test the cloud server’s outbound path
A healthy-looking encoder output does not prove the server can reach YouTube. YouTube’s timeout troubleshooting identifies the outbound internet connection as a possible cause. Test reachability from the cloud host itself, not only from your laptop or a different server. The available YouTube guidance does not prescribe a provider-neutral command or a particular cloud rule, so use the diagnostic tools and network documentation for your host and deployment.

Inspect the change that immediately preceded the failure
- Compare the current egress policy with the last known working configuration. Look for a rule change affecting outbound traffic, its destination or protocol, routing, or another network policy.
- Check whether the server’s route or network attachment changed along with the firewall rule. A timeout can result from the broader outbound path, not just a rule labelled “firewall.”
- Review the cloud provider’s logs or diagnostics, if available, for evidence that outbound traffic is denied or cannot reach its destination.
- Do not assume that a particular port is the cause based only on the word “RTMP.” The provider and changed rule are unspecified, and YouTube’s port-443 suggestion applies to troubleshooting an SSL error, not to every deployment.
Check bitrate and connection stability if it connects
YouTube says the total bitrate being streamed must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. That recommendation is about bandwidth capacity, not a firewall-port requirement. Add together the outgoing bitrate for the stream and compare it with upload capacity available to the server; allow room for variation instead of treating the connection’s nominal maximum as usable stream capacity. Also investigate intermittent connectivity if the encoder connects but the stream remains unstable.

Consider HLS only when both ends support it
YouTube documents HLS as another ingest protocol, but it is an option only when the encoder supports HLS and the YouTube stream configuration is set up for it. Confirm that the firewall policy permits the traffic required by the chosen configuration. Switching protocols is not a general way to bypass an egress block, and the available guidance does not establish HLS as a universal remedy for a firewall change.
When the problem remains
Compare the firewall policy before and after the change and check the associated routing and outbound network settings. Because the cloud provider and rule are not identified, a precise console path or universally correct rule cannot be given. Consult the documentation or support for the provider actually hosting the server, and provide the rule diff, the exact encoder error, the ingest protocol and the time the failure began.
