A YouTube or OBS “400” error has no single confirmed fix: first identify the screen and action that produced it. If OBS shows the error while starting the encoder, YouTube’s recommended first step is to create a new stream key in Live Control Room and replace the old one in OBS. For SSL errors or timeouts, check the RTMPS URL and port. A 400 in an account-linking or API workflow is a different failure path, so don’t assume changing the stream key will fix it.
First, identify which “400” you’re seeing
The number alone is not enough to diagnose the problem. Note the exact wording, the screen where it appears, and the action immediately before it. The distinction matters: YouTube documents encoder-startup and RTMPS connection troubleshooting separately from API errors, which are tied to particular API requests and fields.

- Browser or account-linking window: the error occurs during sign-in or linking an account.
- YouTube API setup: an API request to create or configure a broadcast or stream returns an error.
- OBS startup: the error appears after you select Start Streaming.
- Connection instability: OBS reports an SSL error, timeout, dropped frames, or disconnection while attempting to send the stream.
Record the full message and, if you need help, capture the screen showing it. An API response such as required (400) or invalidValue (400) refers to a specific API operation or resource field; YouTube’s API documentation does not establish that those errors explain an RTMP ingest failure. If OBS shows the error when starting the stream
Start with the stream key. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance recommends generating a new key in Live Control Room and updating the third-party encoder when it errors as the encoder starts. YouTube: Fix streaming issues.

- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the intended live stream.
- Copy or generate a new stream key there. Make sure you are working with the scheduled or current stream you intend to broadcast.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service, then replace the existing key with the new one. If you use a custom server, verify that its URL belongs to the intended stream.
- Select Apply, then OK, and try Start Streaming again.
YouTube’s encoder setup requires the stream URL and key to be entered in the encoder. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to stream to your channel. YouTube: Go live with an encoder.
If the error mentions SSL or a timeout
Check that OBS is using the RTMPS server URL shown in Live Control Room, not an RTMP URL copied from another setup or an older configuration. YouTube notes that an ordinary RTMP URL may be displayed by default, so confirm the protocol in the actual URL rather than assuming it is secure.

- Copy the RTMPS stream URL from Live Control Room and enter it in OBS under Settings > Stream if you configure the server manually.
- Confirm the URL begins with the RTMPS protocol and corresponds to the stream you are setting up.
- If the correct RTMPS URL still produces an SSL error, try specifying port
443, as YouTube suggests for persistent SSL errors.
Google’s RTMPS guidance specifies TLS on port 443 and requires the hostname to be included in SNI authentication. This is a reason to use YouTube’s provided RTMPS hostname rather than substituting an IP address or editing the URL arbitrarily. Google: RTMPS ingestion. If the problem is dropped frames or intermittent disconnections
Dropped frames and disconnections point to network stability or bitrate, not necessarily a 400 response. OBS says it is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio itself to cause dropped frames; its connection guidance focuses on the path between your computer and the streaming service. These steps are for instability, not a universal fix for an HTTP 400.

- Try another ingest server if YouTube offers a different server option in your setup.
- Lower the output bitrate until it fits your stable upload capacity. OBS suggests starting around 75% of total upload speed; treat that as a starting point, not a guarantee. The service’s bitrate limits still apply, and other devices or uploads sharing the connection can reduce available bandwidth.
- Review OBS network options using the connection troubleshooting guide, and test one change at a time.
- Check for software interference from firewall or antivirus tools, a VPN, or bundled network-optimization software.
- Contact your ISP if the network checks do not resolve the connection problem.
Use OBS’s steps for dropped frames and connection trouble rather than treating them as a diagnosis of a separate API or encoder-startup 400. OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
If the 400 appears during account linking or API setup
Do not apply an RTMP fix until you know what generated the error. Save the exact response text, note the action that triggered it, and establish whether the message came from a browser login, an API request, or OBS’s streaming connection. YouTube’s API reference lists different 400 classes for specific methods and fields; it does not map every 400 to one general cause. The right next step depends on the workflow and full error text.

Check that the channel is ready to go live
Live streaming must be enabled for the channel. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so a newly enabled channel may not be able to start immediately. Check live-streaming status in YouTube Studio before repeatedly changing OBS settings. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder.
