To make a Twitch livestream watchable later, turn on Store Past Broadcasts in Twitch’s Stream Settings before you go live. After the stream, confirm that its VOD appears in Creator Dashboard → Content → Video Producer, then download it or export it to YouTube if you want a copy beyond Twitch’s retention period.
What a livestream recording is—and what Twitch saves
Twitch calls a saved past broadcast a VOD, short for video on demand. Twitch describes a VOD as a recording of a past live stream saved for viewers to watch. The archive setting is not on by default, so a live stream is not automatically guaranteed to become a VOD.

Twitch’s published retention periods vary by account category. These are Twitch policy limits, not permanent storage guarantees; check Twitch’s current On-Demand Content help page because platform policies can change.

Enable Twitch VODs before going live
- Open Twitch Stream Settings. Sign in to Twitch and go to your creator settings for streaming.
- Turn on Store Past Broadcasts. This is the setting Twitch requires to save past broadcasts as VODs. It must be enabled before the broadcast; it does not recreate a stream that was not saved.
- Go live as usual. The archive is handled by Twitch. Keep your streaming configuration and network connection stable: Twitch notes that unstable network conditions or incorrect stream configuration can prevent a broadcast from saving.
Confirm the VOD after the stream
- Open Creator Dashboard → Content → Video Producer.
- Look for the new past broadcast and open it to check that it is available.
- If it is missing, verify that Store Past Broadcasts was enabled before the stream. Also review your stream health and configuration, and use Twitch Inspector to troubleshoot stream problems.
If Twitch did not save the broadcast, the normal creator workflow cannot recover a VOD that is absent from Twitch’s servers. Checking Video Producer soon after each stream gives you a chance to notice a missing archive while you can still investigate the cause.
Keep a copy beyond Twitch’s retention period
Twitch’s Video Producer lets creators download VODs for local storage or connect Twitch and YouTube accounts to export directly. The choice depends on where you want to control the copy, whether you have enough storage, and how you want viewers to access it.

| Option | What it is useful for | Points to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Leave the VOD on Twitch | Convenient replay access on Twitch without making a separate copy. | It remains subject to Twitch’s retention period and the possibility that a stream fails to save. |
| Download from Video Producer | A local copy you can manage and back up yourself. | You need sufficient local storage and a backup plan if you want to protect the file. An external drive is optional; there is no universal capacity requirement established here. |
| Export to YouTube | A direct transfer after connecting your Twitch and YouTube accounts. | Consider the destination’s audience visibility and rules. A YouTube export does not by itself establish that third-party material in the recording is cleared for reuse. |
Twitch documents the download and connected-account export options in its On-Demand Content help page. Neither option is universally best: choose based on who should control the file, where you want viewers to find it, and how you will preserve it.

Check rights before sharing or exporting
A saved recording is not proof that every song, game audio track, clip or other third-party work in it is cleared for reuse. Twitch says creators are responsible for ensuring their streams and recorded videos do not infringe another person’s copyright. Review the material and secure the rights needed for your intended use before publishing the VOD elsewhere. Twitch’s guidance is in its DMCA & Copyright FAQs.

YouTube says Content ID claims may be made after a live stream completes if the creator archives it. That is a separate platform review, not a grant of permission to use copyrighted material. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams. Copyright rules vary by jurisdiction and context.
Troubleshooting a missing or unusable VOD
- No VOD appears in Video Producer: Check whether Store Past Broadcasts was on before the broadcast. Review stream health and configuration, then use Twitch Inspector to investigate connection or stream issues. If Twitch did not save the VOD to its servers, the normal creator workflow cannot restore it.
- The archive setting was enabled, but the stream still did not save: Twitch says unstable network conditions or incorrect stream configuration can prevent saving. Check those factors rather than assuming the setting guarantees an archive.
- You cannot find an older VOD: Check the account category’s published retention period. A VOD may no longer be available on Twitch after that period, which is why downloading or exporting a needed copy before it expires matters.
- A recording is available, but you are unsure whether you can republish its contents: Review rights for music, game audio, clips and other third-party material. Availability on Twitch or a platform’s detection process does not itself provide permission.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a different task—keeping a YouTube channel live around the clock by looping uploaded videos—StreamNeo is a cloud option, not a way to capture a Twitch broadcast.
