A looped video is not, by itself, evidence of an RTMP handshake problem. First check that your encoder uses the current YouTube RTMPS URL and stream key, preserves the server hostname, supports RTMPS, and can reach port 443. Only troubleshoot the loop or media settings after the connection succeeds.
Identify where the failure happens
A handshake is part of establishing the secure connection between your encoder and YouTube. A timeout or SSL/TLS certificate error before connection is different from a stream that connects and then freezes, disconnects, or stumbles when the video loops.

- Connection fails before it starts: Check the protocol, URL, hostname, port, encoder support, and network access.
- SSL/TLS certificate error: Recheck the RTMPS URL and port 443; do not disable certificate verification as a routine workaround.
- Connection succeeds, then playback stalls or drops: Investigate stream health and the input or loop workflow separately.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, for live ingest. Its troubleshooting guidance covers SSL errors and connection timeouts, but does not identify looping as a cause of handshake failure. YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS

Fix the connection in order
- Copy fresh ingest settings. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream settings and copy the stream URL and key. YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default; use the lock control to access the RTMPS URL. Keep the key private: it is a credential, and should not appear in published logs or screenshots.
- Use RTMPS and the correct endpoint. Confirm the URL starts with
rtmpsand includes the valid YouTube server and application path. RTMPS connections must use port 443. Do not replace the hostname with an IP address or remove it when splitting server and path fields. YouTube requires the hostname for authentication through SNI during the TLS handshake. See Google for Developers: Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS. - Match the encoder’s URL fields. Update the encoder and choose its YouTube RTMPS preset if available. Otherwise, enter the URL and key from Live Control Room. Check the encoder’s field convention: some accept a full URL, while others take a server URL and stream key separately. Put the key in the intended field only; appending it to a URL while also entering it separately can duplicate it.
- Verify RTMPS support in this encoder build. RTMP support alone does not establish RTMPS support. Check the encoder’s settings or documentation for the specific application and version you use.
- Check outbound network access. If the settings and encoder support are correct but the connection times out, check whether the host or network allows outbound port 443 and whether TLS inspection is interfering. If permitted, compare from another network, or ask the network administrator about outbound access and TLS inspection. This is a diagnostic comparison, not proof that your network is the cause.
After connecting, check the stream and loop
Bitrate, resolution, and keyframe settings affect the quality and health of an established stream; they do not fix a wrong endpoint or a failed TLS handshake. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. Its encoder guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. Set the bitrate from YouTube’s current table for your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as correct for every profile. If the stream stays connected but the failure appears at the loop boundary, compare a single pass with a loop while keeping the rest of the setup unchanged. Check whether the transport disconnects or whether only the media freezes or restarts. Review encoder and input logs, but redact the stream key and other secrets before sharing them. FFmpeg documents RTMP and related protocol options in its protocol documentation; that documentation does not establish a universal loop-specific handshake fix. Avoid assuming that -stream_loop causes the problem.

| Playback stalls or restarts at the loop boundary | Compare a single pass with a loop and inspect whether the transport dropped or only the media input restarted. |
